To see which Mac apps can use your camera, microphone, location, files, or other sensitive features, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security. Select a permission category, review the apps listed, and switch off access you do not want an app to have. The categories shown depend on the permissions apps have requested.
How to review and limit app permissions on macOS
- Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then select Privacy & Security. Scroll down the sidebar if you do not see the section. Apple’s Mac user guide explains these settings.
- Choose a category, such as Camera, Microphone, Location Services, or Files & Folders.
- Review each app listed and decide whether its access is needed for a feature you use. Switch off access you do not want to allow. The app may stop working fully or lose features that rely on that permission.
- Repeat for other relevant categories. An app’s access to one resource does not tell you what permissions it has in other categories.
macOS asks for permission when an app first requests certain kinds of access. You can revisit that choice later in Privacy & Security. Permission prompts and category lists vary according to what an app requests.
Which apps can access my camera, microphone, files, or location on Mac?
Open the corresponding category in System Settings > Privacy & Security. The categories below cover common checks; the options visible on your Mac depend on the apps that have requested access.
- Camera and Microphone: Review which apps can use those devices.
- Location Services: Review apps that can access location information.
- Files & Folders: Check access to particular locations or types of files.
- Full Disk Access: Review apps with much broader file access.
- Accessibility, Automation, and Input Monitoring: Check apps that can interact with or monitor parts of your Mac beyond ordinary access to a file or device.
- Screen & System Audio Recording and Local Network: Review access to screen or audio recording and to devices on your local network.
For a permission not listed here, look for its matching category in Privacy & Security. Apple’s overview of app access to files and other protected resources describes the purpose of several categories.

Which permissions deserve extra scrutiny?
Full Disk Access
Full Disk Access is broader than permission to use a selected folder. Apple says it can allow access to all files, including data from other apps and Time Machine backups, as well as certain administrative settings. Keep it enabled only for apps you trust and whose functions require it.
Input Monitoring
Input Monitoring can let an app monitor mouse or trackpad input and see keyboard typing. Consider whether the app’s purpose justifies that level of access before allowing it.

Automation and other control-oriented access
Some permissions enable interaction with or control over other apps, rather than access to a single piece of information. Review the app’s role and the capability granted, not just the app name; turn off access that is not needed for the tasks you want it to perform.
How to check whether the camera or microphone is active
Activity indicators can alert you to use, but they do not replace the permission list in Privacy & Security.

- Camera: Apple says a green light beside the camera glows when it is on.
- Microphone: Control Centre’s Recording Indicator shows when the microphone is in use or has been used recently.
If you want to change which apps are allowed to use either device, open the Camera or Microphone category in Privacy & Security and adjust the app’s access there. Apple’s guides cover the built-in camera and microphone access indicators.
Where are these settings on older macOS versions?
The menu names depend on your macOS release. On macOS 13 or later, use System Settings > Privacy & Security. On macOS 12 or earlier, use System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Apple’s security guide describes this version distinction and the file-access consent model for macOS 10.15 or later.

What permission settings do—and do not—tell you
These controls determine whether an app can access a protected resource on your Mac. They do not, by themselves, establish what the app does with information it can access. Apple notes that information collected by third-party apps or websites is governed by those parties’ own terms and privacy policies. For an app’s collection and use practices, consult its privacy policy as well as its macOS permissions.
