To get more time from a Windows laptop without making apps feel sluggish, start with the display and idle-time settings, then reduce background activity you do not need. Keep Best power efficiency for ordinary unplugged work, and switch to Balanced or Best performance only when a task calls for it. These targeted changes avoid imposing a system-wide performance limit as your first move.
Start with the settings that save power without slowing active work
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. Review the suggestions and apply the ones that suit how you use the laptop. The page may offer different options—or omit some entirely—depending on your hardware and sensors. Microsoft’s battery guidance describes these controls.
- Lower brightness to a comfortable level. This reduces display power without changing how quickly your applications run. Microsoft’s technical overview says the display can use up to 40 percent of a mobile computer’s overall power; that is a general reference, not a measurement for every current laptop. Microsoft Learn’s power-management overview was last updated October 25, 2021.
- Shorten the on-battery screen-off and sleep intervals. The display can turn off sooner when you step away, while sleep reduces power use when the laptop is idle. Adjust these separately for battery and plugged-in use if your device provides separate settings.
For the display, you can also consider a lower refresh rate if you do not need very smooth motion. The trade-off is less fluid scrolling and animation, not a general slowdown in application processing. If your laptop has an OLED screen, dark mode may reduce display power; do not assume it will have the same effect on other panel types.
Choose a power mode to match the task
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery and look for the power mode control. Microsoft describes the choice as a balance between battery life and performance; the labels and available modes depend on your device and selected power plan. See Microsoft’s power-mode guidance.

| Mode | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Best power efficiency | Routine unplugged work such as reading, writing, and browsing | Prioritizes lower power use; some demanding tasks may feel less responsive. |
| Balanced | When Best power efficiency makes a particular task feel too slow | A middle ground between power use and responsiveness. |
| Best performance | Short periods when a demanding task needs the extra performance, preferably while plugged in | Uses more power, drains the battery faster, and may make the laptop warmer. |
Power mode is a broad system-level choice. For everyday use on battery, start with Best power efficiency; if a task feels less responsive, try Balanced before resorting to Best performance.
Reduce unnecessary background drain
Check which apps are actually using battery before changing their behavior. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and review the app activity. If an app you do not need is consuming power, check its background permissions and restrict background activity only when you can do without features such as syncing or notifications.

Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
- Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.
If the laptop also feels slow, open Task Manager and inspect its Processes and Performance views for resource-heavy activity. Close only applications you recognize and do not need. Do not disable security, update, or system services to chase battery savings.
Use Energy saver when its trade-offs suit you
On Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, Energy saver replaces the earlier Battery saver feature. You can turn it on manually or configure it to activate at a battery threshold in Settings > System > Power & battery. Microsoft says Energy saver may dim the display, change syncing, and limit background activity. Its documented default brightness reduction is 30%, and users can toggle that reduction. If dimming is uncomfortable, disable the brightness change while keeping other Energy saver behavior if appropriate. Microsoft Learn explains Energy saver’s behavior.

Microsoft explains what the end of support means.

Open the HTML report it creates and review Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage. The report can help distinguish high power use from reduced estimated battery capacity; it does not identify a universally compatible replacement part. If replacement seems necessary, confirm the exact laptop model and battery compatibility, and check whether the battery is user-replaceable or requires service. Microsoft’s battery-care page explains the report and related guidance: Caring for your battery in Windows.

Battery runtime per charge and battery capacity over the long term are related but different concerns. Microsoft says lithium-ion capacity falls with charge-discharge use, and heat can accelerate deterioration. These practices may slow wear; they do not promise a specific number of extra hours per charge or restore capacity already lost:

- If storing the laptop for a long period, leave it at roughly 40%–60% charge in a cool, dry place and check it periodically.
If the battery looks swollen
A visibly expanded battery is a safety issue, not a routine battery-health problem. Stop using the device immediately, handle it cautiously, and do not press on or puncture the battery. Follow Microsoft’s guidance and contact the laptop manufacturer or a qualified service provider for safe handling.
Browser choice is a narrower, dated comparison
Microsoft reports that tests found Edge delivered 36–53% longer battery life per charge than Chrome, Firefox, or Opera while browsing on Windows 10. The support page does not state the test year. Treat this as Microsoft’s vendor-published result for that Windows 10 browsing test—not an independent benchmark, a Windows 11 result, or a ranking for other workloads and browser versions. Microsoft’s page provides the comparison.
