LTE data capability alone does not prove that your phone can make voice calls over LTE on your carrier’s network.
What you need to check
VoLTE means voice service over LTE. Whether it works depends on more than the phone’s ability to connect to LTE: the exact handset model and software, the carrier’s network, your line or plan, and the SIM can all matter. Sony notes that some carriers may require operator-branded phones or operator-customized software for VoLTE (Sony support).
Start by finding the phone’s precise model number and software version. A family name such as a phone’s marketing model may cover regional or carrier variants with different support.
Check your carrier’s compatibility information
- Look up the exact model. Use your carrier’s official VoLTE-compatible-device list or IMEI checker, if it offers one. Lists and checkers are specific to a carrier and market and may change.
- Ask the carrier if the result is unclear. Give support the exact model number and ask whether it supports VoLTE on that network and your plan. Also ask whether your line and SIM are eligible and provisioned for the service. Compatibility guidance from carriers such as Airtel is specific to their own service.
Do not treat an LTE-compatible handset as automatically VoLTE-compatible. A carrier’s approval for the particular model is the more useful check.

Look for VoLTE in your phone’s settings
Open the cellular or mobile-network settings and look for a control named VoLTE, LTE voice, HD Voice, or Voice & Data. The exact label and menu path vary by phone, operating system, carrier, and region; some phones have VoLTE enabled by default and show no separate switch.
For example, Jio’s instructions describe its own device settings and service context (Jio VoLTE settings FAQ). Use your phone maker’s or carrier’s instructions for the exact model rather than assuming that one menu path applies to all phones.

Test a call and interpret the indicator carefully
- Install available operating-system and carrier settings updates.
- If you find a VoLTE-related setting, enable it, then restart the phone. Videotron’s Canadian guide also recommends checking updates and restarting, and notes that a VoLTE-capable SIM may be required in its service context (Videotron VoLTE guide).
- In an area with LTE coverage, place a test call and observe whether LTE remains available during the call or a VoLTE/HD indicator appears.
Indicators differ between phones and networks, so neither an icon nor the continued display of LTE is universal proof. Jio describes VoLTE, HD, or an arrow symbol for its network (Jio indicator FAQ); Airtel describes a 4G/HD or VoLTE indicator for its service (Airtel VoLTE FAQs). Treat what you see as a clue and ask your carrier to confirm if the result is uncertain.

A missing switch does not, by itself, establish that the phone’s hardware is incompatible. The setting may be hidden, enabled by default, or unavailable because of software, carrier support, SIM, or line provisioning.

- Fast Connectivity: Dual 4G VoLTE SIM supports global connectivity and Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Update the phone and carrier settings, then restart it.
- Ask carrier support to check VoLTE compatibility for the exact phone model and software, plus provisioning for your line or plan and SIM.
- Ask whether your carrier requires a different SIM or a service change. SIM requirements are carrier-specific; Videotron, for example, discusses a VoLTE SIM in its own service context.
If a call fails or appears to fall back from LTE, have the carrier investigate before buying a replacement phone or SIM. Compare remedies based on what support confirms: a software update or setting change, a carrier-side account adjustment, a SIM replacement, or—only if the carrier confirms the current handset is unsupported—a different phone.
