Whether that combination works for your phone depends on its exact model, country, carrier and plan. An eSIM changes how a line is provisioned and managed; the official sources cited here do not establish that it improves speed, reception or battery life compared with a physical SIM.
How dual-SIM works on the Galaxy S23
Samsung says the S23 series supports a mixed setup of one physical SIM and one eSIM, subject to device and carrier compatibility. For example, Samsung’s US Verizon specification identifies the Galaxy S23 variant in that document as Dual SIM with a Nano/eSIM slot type. That is evidence for the stated US variant, not proof that every regional S23 tray accepts two physical SIM cards. Samsung’s S23-series SIM and eSIM guidance and the US Verizon Galaxy S23 specification sheet describe those supported configurations.
Samsung also says a phone can store multiple eSIM profiles, but only one eSIM profile can be active at a time. A profile saved on the device is not automatically an active cellular line. Do not assume that storing several profiles means several eSIM lines—or more than two lines overall—can be used simultaneously on your particular S23.
What changes when you choose eSIM instead of a physical SIM?
| Consideration | Physical Nano-SIM | eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| How it is provided | A removable card inserted into the phone’s SIM tray. | A carrier-provisioned profile added digitally to the device. |
| Adding or moving a line | Requires access to a compatible SIM card and tray; moving service involves moving the card. | Usually involves carrier-supported digital activation. Transfer or reactivation depends on the carrier’s process. |
| Using it with another line | Can be paired with an eSIM on supported S23 configurations. | Can be paired with a physical SIM on supported S23 configurations; eSIM profile storage does not mean every saved profile is active. |
| What to verify | That the phone variant has the required tray and supports the intended SIM configuration. | That the exact phone variant, carrier and plan support eSIM, and that any carrier lock or approval requirements are met. |
Either format can serve a personal, work or other line if your carrier and plan support the setup. Which line handles calls, messages or mobile data is managed through the phone’s settings and may depend on carrier configuration. AT&T’s Galaxy S23 instructions, for example, include selecting a SIM for mobile data; that is AT&T-specific guidance, not a universal carrier procedure.

How to add an eSIM to a Galaxy S23
- Confirm with your carrier that eSIM is supported for your exact S23 model and plan. Check whether the phone must be unlocked or otherwise approved for eSIM.
- Connect the phone to a network for activation, and obtain the carrier’s eSIM QR code or follow the carrier’s app-based activation process.
- Open Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > SIM Card Manager, then choose Add SIM or Add eSIM if that option appears. Menu names can vary by software version and region.
- Scan the QR code supplied by your carrier and follow the on-screen prompts. AT&T’s S23 guide uses Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM > Scan QR code; if AT&T has not provided a code, its instructions may direct you to its app to obtain a plan.
For general steps, see Samsung’s S23-series support guidance. For AT&T’s carrier-specific process, see AT&T’s Galaxy S23 eSIM setup guide.
Why eSIM availability varies
Having eSIM-capable hardware does not guarantee that a particular carrier or plan can activate it. Samsung says eSIM support varies by country and carrier, and that device eligibility can depend on whether the phone is unlocked or accepted for eSIM by the carrier. Its worldwide supported-model and carrier directory, dated 2026-07-01, warns that availability differs by country. Samsung’s Gulf S23-series support answer was last updated 2026-06-21, while AT&T’s instructions apply to its own service. Check the current rules for your model code, country, carrier and plan before relying on a specific configuration.

If eSIM activation fails
- The eSIM option is missing: Confirm that the exact model and regional variant support eSIM, then check eligibility with your carrier.
- The carrier rejects activation: Ask whether your plan supports eSIM and whether the phone must be unlocked or carrier-approved.
- The QR code will not scan or activation stalls: Check the carrier’s code and instructions, ensure the phone has network connectivity, or use the carrier app if it provides that route.
Samsung lists carrier restrictions, unsupported plans, connectivity problems and QR-code scanning issues among possible causes. If the carrier confirms your plan and device are eligible but setup still fails, contact that carrier for activation support.
