Protect a garden by matching plants to local conditions, keeping soil covered, checking moisture, and watering the roots that need it. El Niño changes seasonal climate odds; it does not predict drought in every location. Check your local precipitation outlook and water restrictions before deciding when or how much to water.
Will El Niño cause drought where I live?
Not necessarily. El Niño is a climate pattern, not a local drought forecast. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center reported a strengthening El Niño in its September 10, 2026 diagnostic, with a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2026–27. NOAA also cautions that stronger events do not ensure strong impacts; they can only make some impacts more likely. Those probabilities describe the climate event, not the chance that your garden will experience drought. Check NOAA’s ENSO strength outlook alongside its regional seasonal outlooks, then consult your local water provider for current restrictions.
How should I prepare a garden for dry weather?
Choose plants for your region and site
Select plants suited to your local climate, soil, sun exposure, and available water. Drought-tolerant plants can still need regular watering while they establish, so plan for that early care rather than assuming new plants are immediately self-sufficient. The University of Illinois Extension’s plants for dry areas guide can help, but use regionally appropriate recommendations from your own Cooperative Extension office. Illinois Extension describes xeriscaping as combining appropriate plant choices with soil cover; it does not require a desert-style garden. Replacing some water-demanding lawn with suitable perennial beds or groundcover may also reduce the area you need to irrigate.
Keep soil covered and beds weeded
Cover exposed soil with mulch or living groundcover and remove weeds that compete with garden plants for water. Choose mulch and its depth for the plant and local conditions rather than applying one depth everywhere. Keep mulch from piling against stems and tree trunks; Colorado State University Extension discusses landscape watering and drought practices in its drought watering guide.

Set up targeted watering
Drip irrigation and soaker hoses can direct water toward plant root zones, especially in beds where plant spacing and layout make targeted delivery practical. Check that water is reaching the roots rather than merely wetting the surface or running beyond the bed. Follow your local rules for watering times and methods. Extension guidance from Oklahoma State University and Iowa State University covers water-wise garden practices; no single irrigation method or product is right for every layout.
How often should I water during a drought?
There is no reliable universal calendar: soil, weather, plant type, rooting depth, and local restrictions all affect timing. Check soil moisture before watering, then water the plants that need it. Where the plant and soil permit, water slowly and deeply enough to reach the root zone, less often rather than giving frequent shallow sprinkles. Oklahoma State Extension recommends watering early in the day. Check your local provider’s schedule first, because permitted days and hours vary by location.

Prioritize plants by their vulnerability and current needs rather than watering every part of the garden equally. Iowa State Extension recommends spot-watering new additions instead of irrigating an entire bed; established perennials generally need supplemental water only during extended dry periods. For newly planted trees and shrubs, check both the root ball and surrounding soil, and water slowly and deeply when they are dry.
Give vegetables water at sensitive stages
Vegetables are particularly vulnerable to water stress during development, after transplanting, and while flowering and producing fruit. Colorado State Extension advises maintaining appropriate moisture through these stages while avoiding both underwatering and overwatering. Adjust to the crop and soil rather than treating every vegetable bed alike.

Pots hold less soil than in-ground beds, so they can dry faster. Use a moisture-retaining potting mix, water thoroughly, and move containers into shade or shelter when appropriate during hot weather. In hot, windy conditions, containers may need daily attention; check their moisture instead of assuming a fixed interval.

How do the main garden choices compare?
| Choice | What it changes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Regionally suited, drought-tolerant plants | Can reduce ongoing water needs once established. | They still need attention and water during establishment; match them to local soil, sun, and climate. See Illinois Extension’s dry-area plant guidance. |
| Water-demanding plants | May require more supplemental watering during dry periods. | Consider whether their needs fit your water supply and local restrictions before planting. |
| Drip line or soaker hose | Targets water toward roots in suitable beds. | Check root-zone coverage and local watering rules; setup depends on plant spacing and garden layout. |
| Broad overhead watering | Applies water across a wider area than the target root zones. | May wet areas that do not need water; use local guidance to determine an appropriate method. |
| In-ground bed | Has a larger soil volume than a pot. | Check soil moisture and focus on the plants that need water most. |
| Container | Limited soil volume can mean faster drying. | Water thoroughly, monitor closely in hot or windy weather, and use shade or shelter when appropriate. |
Where can I get location-specific advice?
- Seasonal climate: Use NOAA’s regional precipitation outlooks; El Niño event probabilities do not substitute for local forecasts.
- Watering rules: Check your water provider’s current restrictions and permitted watering schedule before irrigating.
- Plants and garden practices: Ask your local Cooperative Extension office for recommendations suited to your climate, soil, and garden.
- Drought watering: The University of Minnesota Extension’s extreme drought guidance offers additional advice for Minnesota gardeners; apply regional advice with care outside that climate.
