You usually cannot remove a face from every copy of a photo across the internet yourself. Start by asking the website or platform hosting the original post to remove it or blur your face. If a Google result remains, request removal from Search separately; that does not delete the photo from its original website. Intimate or sexually explicit images shared without consent have additional reporting routes.
First, identify where the photo is posted
Find the page showing the photo and, if possible, the image’s direct URL. Save those links, the account or post details, and relevant context for your request. Avoid reposting or forwarding the image to prove the problem. If contacting the uploader could put you at risk, skip direct contact and use the platform’s reporting process.
There are two separate things you may want removed: the post or image on the site that hosts it, and a link to that page in a search engine. The host controls its own content. Google says it cannot remove material hosted on a non-Google site; its removal process affects what appears in Google Search, not the original file. See Google’s guidance on removing information from Google.
How to request removal of an ordinary photo
- Ask the poster, if it is safe. Request a specific action: delete the post, remove the image, or crop or blur your face. Identify the exact post and save a copy of your request.
- Report the exact post to the host. Use the platform’s report, privacy, or image-privacy process. Explain that you are the person depicted, link to the post, describe the privacy concern, and state whether you are asking for removal or a face blur. The platform reviews the request under its own rules; being in a photo does not by itself guarantee that it will be removed. Meta’s image-privacy policy and reporting links are examples of platform-specific routes.
- Contact a website owner if the image is on a separate site. Use the site’s contact or privacy details to request removal or editing. If you cannot identify the operator, you can still ask the search engine to review an eligible result, but that is not a substitute for asking the host.
- Check whether a search result needs a separate request. If the host removes the photo or changes the page but Google still shows the old result or snippet, submit an outdated-content refresh request. For other eligible personal-content or legal grounds, use the corresponding Google request category; eligibility depends on the facts and policy.
Google has separate categories for issues such as personal information or doxxing, sexual content, content involving minors, exploitative removal practices, and legal requests. An ordinary portrait does not automatically qualify for an intimate-image removal process. Rules and legal rights for ordinary photos also vary by platform and jurisdiction.

If the photo is intimate or sexually explicit
If an intimate or explicit image of you was shared without your consent, including a fake or AI-generated sexual image, report it through the host’s dedicated intimate-image process and the relevant search-engine process. Keep the post and image URLs and other useful context for the report, but do not circulate the image further.
For Google Search, open the image result, choose its More menu, then select Remove result and the option indicating that it shows a sexual image of you. Google’s current flow lets signed-in users submit multiple images and opt into protections against duplicate or similar results. Google says it aims to review an intimate-image request within 48 hours; that is a review aim, not a promise that the request will qualify or that every copy will be removed. Details are in Google’s non-consensual explicit or intimate image guidance.

On February 10, 2026, Google Product Manager Phoebe Wong described a Search change this way: “Today, we’re introducing a new, simpler way for people to request the removal of non-consensual explicit images from Search.” That Search process still concerns results in Google, not deletion of the original image from a third-party host.

If the person was an adult when the image was made
Meta directs adults in intimate-image cases to StopNCII.org, a tool intended to help prevent sharing on participating services. It is not a universal deletion tool and does not apply to ordinary photos.

If the person was under 18 when the image was made
Meta points to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s Take It Down for images made when someone was under 18. This is a distinct route from the adult service and is designed to help limit circulation on participating services, not erase every copy everywhere.
If the case is covered by U.S. law
The U.S. Take It Down Act covers specified intimate images, not ordinary photographs generally. The Federal Trade Commission’s May 19, 2026 guidance says covered platforms must provide an easy way to request removal and take down covered images within 48 hours, including known identical copies. The FTC states: “Thanks to the Take It Down Act, platforms have to give you that easy way to ask — and they’re required to take down those images within 48 hours.” This is the FTC’s description of the Act’s requirements for covered intimate images, not a worldwide rule or a guarantee for every image. If a U.S. platform does not comply in a covered case, the FTC says to report it at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. See the FTC’s explanation of the Take It Down Act.

What to expect—and what not to assume
- A host removal request and a search removal request are different. Removing a search result does not take down the hosted photo; removing the hosted photo may still leave a stale search result until it refreshes.
- Appearing in a photo is not an automatic takedown basis. A host may remove it under its own privacy rules, but the outcome depends on its policies and the circumstances. For Google, choose the policy category that fits the actual content rather than labeling an ordinary portrait as intimate imagery.
- Do not assume copyright is a shortcut. Being depicted in a photograph does not, by itself, establish that you own its copyright.
- Keep records and prioritize safety. Retain links, post details, and your submitted request. If engaging with the uploader could create a safety concern, do not contact them directly.
