Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Peter James reported that Meta’s Muse agent copied files from the Linux runtime assigned to his session into his connected Google Drive. He described an archive measuring about 2.7 GB compressed and 6.8 GB after extraction, with Ubuntu system files and Muse runtime materials among its contents. The report concerns files visible inside that assigned environment; it does not show that Muse escaped its boundary or accessed Meta infrastructure or another customer’s data.
What does the 6.8 GB figure mean?
James reported that the ZIP was about 2.7 GB as downloaded and 6.8 GB when unpacked. He also noted that Muse’s delivery message gave the ZIP size as 2.86 GB, a difference he did not resolve. These are figures from James’s account, not independently audited measurements. Read James’s account.
What did the export reportedly contain?
James said the archive appeared to represent the root filesystem of the Linux environment assigned to his Muse session. He listed Ubuntu system files, Muse documentation, integration code, app templates, memory files, agent logs, and SSH key files. He identified directories including /home/hatch, /opt/hatch, and /opt/hatch-image.
According to his description, the agent’s home directory included instruction and identity files such as SOUL.md, IDENTITY.md, USER.md, MEMORY.md, AGENTS.md, and TOOLS.md. He also reported 113 subagent JSONL traces in an agents/ directory, around 20 Markdown documents on topics including browser use, connectors, credentials, payments, data handling, voice, and scheduling, and roughly 68 skill directories.

That inventory comes from James’s description of an archive he did not publish. There is no public forensic image that allows others to verify every file or independently audit the full archive.
Why “root filesystem” does not mean a host-system breach
In this account, “root filesystem” refers to the top-level directory structure within the Linux environment assigned to the session. Seeing or exporting that environment does not, by itself, mean a user reached the physical host operating system or crossed into another customer’s environment. James said he did not demonstrate a container escape and that his limited boundary probing appeared to hold.

The reported action was packaging files visible within the assigned runtime and sending them to a connected Drive. Neither James’s account nor the later reporting establishes access to Meta’s host systems or another customer’s data.
What The Verge reproduced—and what Meta said
The Verge reported a partial reproduction: after initially receiving a refusal, its reporter started a new session and obtained what Muse described as safe copies of /opt/hatch and /home/hatch, with some sensitive material, including SSH keys, removed. The Verge said the files appeared to match the earlier accounts. This supports the claim that runtime directories could be exported, but it is not an independent inspection of James’s complete archive. Read The Verge’s report.

Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts told The Verge: “Just like with the laptop in front of you, of course you can see the files. Exporting virtual machine data doesn’t give people any privileged access to Meta infrastructure or to other people’s data.” Roberts also said that Meta was continuing to update the product, so users might see changes in how much information was available about their virtual machine.
Meta’s published architecture describes a dedicated Linux virtual machine in an isolated runtime cell, with separate components for sensitive credentials and connector actions and a Sentinel system controlling access at sensitive boundaries. That is Meta’s description of its design, not an independent audit of this export. The report does not establish that Sentinel failed or that the archive contained central credentials. What the report establishes—and what remains unknown
| Question | What the available reporting says |
|---|---|
| Was the export large and broad? | James reported a 6.8 GB extracted archive containing operating-system and agent-runtime files, among other material. The full archive is not public or independently audited. James’s account |
| Did files leave the assigned runtime? | James said files visible in his session’s runtime were sent to his connected Drive. The Verge later reported a partial reproduction involving runtime directories. James’s account; The Verge’s report |
| Were the SSH keys usable or misused? | James did not establish whether the keys were active or what systems they could reach. Their reported presence does not prove they were misused. James’s account |
| Was this a host or cross-customer compromise? | Not established by the cited reporting. James said he did not demonstrate an escape, and Meta said exporting virtual-machine data did not grant access to its infrastructure or other users’ data. James’s account; The Verge’s report |
The practical security question raised by the report is how an agent should handle files available inside its assigned runtime, particularly when it can package them for a connected service. It is distinct from the separate question of whether a runtime boundary was crossed; this export report does not answer that broader question.
