Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A high-wattage USB-C charger does not force a phone, tablet, or laptop to charge at that wattage. The device, charger, cable, and port must support compatible charging capabilities, and the device negotiates the power it can use. Heat, activity, battery settings, and a charger shared with other devices can slow charging further.
Why a high-wattage charger may still charge slowly
USB-C describes the connector, not the charging speed
USB-C is a connector standard; it does not guarantee support for a particular charging protocol or power level. The USB Implementers Forum states, “USB Type-C® is not USB Power Delivery”. Devices with USB-C ports can support different charging capabilities. See the USB-IF explanation of USB Type-C.
Power is negotiated between compatible equipment
USB Power Delivery (USB PD) lets compatible devices and chargers negotiate power, so a device requests what it can use rather than automatically receiving the charger’s maximum. USB-IF describes USB PD as enabling “more flexible power delivery along with data over a single cable.” The standard can support up to 240 W in compatible configurations, but that ceiling is not an expected rate for an arbitrary phone or laptop. The available power depends on the supported profiles of the device and charger, as well as the cable. Read USB-IF’s USB Power Delivery overview.
The cable, port, and adapter all affect the result
A cable or adapter may limit the charging path even when the charger’s headline wattage is high. For example, Google says its Pixel phones charge more slowly with a USB-A-to-USB-C cable than with a USB-C adapter and USB-C cable. Google also specifies an e-marker cable for using more than 60 W with its Pixel Flex Dual Port 67W Charger; that requirement applies to that charger, not universally to every USB-C setup. Check the device and charger makers’ compatibility guidance for your specific equipment.

Heat, device use, and battery settings can reduce charging
Charging speed can vary with the device model and conditions. Demanding apps or other heavy activity use power while the device is plugged in; a hot device may slow or pause charging to protect itself. Battery-care features can also reduce, pause, or limit charging, including when the battery is near full or reaches a configured limit. Battery condition matters too: Google notes that battery performance can decline with age. These behaviors and details vary by manufacturer and device.
A shared charger may allocate power differently
Some multiport chargers change their output when more than one device is connected. As a Pixel-specific example, Google lists up to 67 W from one port with one device connected to its Pixel Flex Dual Port 67W Charger, and up to 60 W per port with two devices. The charger can prioritize a Pixel device, so a non-Pixel device may receive less power. Other chargers may allocate power differently; check the instructions for the model you own.

How to troubleshoot slow USB-C charging
- Check the device’s specifications. Find the exact model’s supported charging protocol and input limit in the manufacturer’s documentation. Do not assume that a USB-C port supports USB PD or that the device can use the charger’s full output. For Pixel phones, Google lists compatible adapter examples including Google USB-C fast chargers rated 30 W, 45 W, or 67 W; PPS adapters rated 30 W or more; and other USB PD adapters rated 15 W or more. The rate still depends on the Pixel model. See Google’s Pixel charging guidance.
- Connect directly to a working wall outlet. Use an adapter and cable documented as compatible with your device. If you are using USB-A-to-USB-C, compare with a suitable USB-C-to-USB-C connection where the device supports it. Google recommends checking the outlet and trying another cable or adapter if charging is slow.
- Check the cable, port, and connections. Reseat both ends and look for visible debris, damage, moisture, or an on-screen accessory warning. Do not push metal objects or other unsafe tools into the port to remove lint. Do not charge if the connector is wet or a manufacturer warning says to disconnect it; follow the maker’s instructions. If possible, test with another known-good cable and adapter. See Google’s Pixel charging troubleshooting steps and Google’s guidance on charging safety.
- Disconnect other devices from a multiport charger. Check whether charging changes when the other device is unplugged. If it does, consult the charger maker’s port-allocation rules before deciding whether the adapter is faulty.
- Let a hot device cool and reduce activity. Stop demanding tasks while charging and allow the device to return to a normal temperature. If charging slows near full or pauses at a chosen limit, review the device’s battery-care or charging-optimization settings. Google explains Pixel charging optimization in its Pixel battery and charging settings guidance.
- Contact the device maker if the problem persists. If charging remains unusually slow with compatible, known-good equipment and a working outlet, the device or battery may need attention. The manufacturer can help distinguish normal limits from a fault.
What to check before replacing a charger
Do not choose a replacement by the largest wattage printed on its packaging alone. Compare these specifications for your exact device and the port you will use:
- Device: supported charging protocols and maximum input rate.
- Charger: supported output profiles and the output available on the specific port.
- Cable: stated power rating, connector type, and any e-marker requirement specified by the charger maker.
- Other connected devices: how the charger reallocates or prioritizes output when ports are shared.
Only after confirming compatibility should you weigh practical factors such as portability and port count. A compatible cable or adapter can remove a bottleneck, but it cannot override the device’s supported rate, charging settings, thermal limits, or the charger’s power allocation.
