If the error continues, verify the spelling, extension, parent folder, and current working directory: quoting keeps a path together, but it cannot make a missing or incorrectly located file exist.
Why a filename with spaces can trigger the error
A shell parses a command into separate words before it runs it. In POSIX-style shells such as Bash, an unquoted space separates words, so a path like Quarterly Report.csv can be treated as two arguments instead of one filename. Quote the complete path or escape the spaces so the shell passes it as a single argument. The POSIX Shell Command Language and the GNU Bash Reference Manual describe these quoting rules.
The wording of the error alone does not prove that spaces are the cause. A wrong directory, misspelled name, or different file extension can produce a similar failure. The shell and the command you ran matter, too.
Quote or escape the path in Bash and other POSIX-style shells
Quote the complete path
For a literal path that contains no single quote, single quotes are a straightforward option:

cat '/home/guest/My Documents/notes.txt'Quoting the complete path—including any directory names with spaces—keeps it together as one argument. Single and double quotes are not interchangeable when a path includes variables or other shell substitutions: single quotes preserve their contents literally, while double quotes allow certain expansions. For a fixed path with no substitutions, either may work; use the shell’s documented rules if your command builds a path dynamically.
Escape each space
In Bash and similar shells, a backslash can escape each space:

ls Quarterly Report.csvThis marks the spaces as part of the filename rather than word boundaries. Quoting is often easier to read when a path contains several spaces.
Check what the shell can find
Try listing the exact quoted path. If it still fails, list its parent directory to see the stored name and extension. For a relative path, an absolute path can help separate a filename problem from a current-directory problem.

Quote paths in PowerShell
PowerShell accepts a path containing spaces as a quoted string:
Get-ChildItem 'C:ReportsQuarterly Report.csv'Microsoft’s PowerShell quoting rules explain that PowerShell processes quoted strings before passing arguments to external programs; the outer quote characters are removed. A PowerShell cmdlet and a native executable may handle the resulting arguments differently. If a quoted path works with a cmdlet but not with an external program, check that program’s argument syntax and the PowerShell version in use rather than assuming the shell treats every command the same way.

Check the path, not just its spaces
Confirm the name and extension
List the parent folder and compare the exact filename, including its extension. A file named Quarterly Report.csv is different from Quarterly Report or Quarterly Report.xlsx. Also check each directory name in the path for spelling and spaces.
Check the current directory and path type
A relative path is resolved from the shell’s current location, so a file can exist elsewhere and still not be found from the directory where the command runs. PowerShell’s path syntax documentation describes relative forms such as . and .., as well as fully qualified paths.

Windows path forms have an additional nuance: Microsoft notes that a drive-qualified path without a backslash after the colon can be relative to the current directory on that drive. Windows uses backslashes to separate path components. If an apparently correct path still fails, check whether it is fully qualified and whether its separators and directory components match the actual location. Check for a trailing space or period on Windows
Microsoft documents that ordinary Windows shell and user-interface operations do not permit file or directory names to end in a space or period, even though an underlying filesystem may support such names. If quoting does not help, inspect the actual stored name and each component rather than assuming the visible name is the exact path.

- Identify the shell. Determine whether the command is running in Bash, zsh, PowerShell, or another command interpreter; quoting syntax differs.
- Keep the path together. Quote the complete path using that shell’s rules, or escape its spaces where supported.
- Verify the file’s exact name. Check spelling, extension, and the parent directory listing.
- Verify the location. Check the current working directory and whether the path is relative or absolute. Temporarily try a fully qualified path when appropriate.
- Check the receiving command. If you are calling an external program, confirm how it expects arguments after the shell has parsed them.
- Check Windows-specific details. Confirm the drive and separators, whether the path is fully qualified, and whether any name ends in a space or period.
There is no single quoting recipe guaranteed to work for every shell, terminal, programming language, and external program. If these checks do not resolve the error, the exact command, shell, operating system, and full error text are needed to narrow down the cause.
