To compare mobile coverage maps in Canada, check the same places on each carrier’s map, using the same network layer, then distinguish the carrier’s own coverage from partner or extended coverage. Confirm that your phone and plan can use the mapped service, and treat the result as an estimate—not a guarantee at your home, workplace or along your commute.

1. List the places where coverage matters

A map check is only useful if it reflects your routine. Write down the exact addresses and routes you rely on, including:

  • Your home and workplace, including specific buildings or nearby entrances if service indoors matters.
  • Your regular commute, including road segments or transit routes—not just the start and end points.
  • Frequently visited communities, destinations and roads, especially places where a missed call or lost data would cause a problem.

Coverage at one address does not tell you whether service continues along a route. Check the route itself, and pay attention to gaps between covered areas.

2. Compare the same map layers and locations

Open each carrier’s official coverage map and search the same addresses and route segments. Compare LTE with LTE and 5G with 5G. If a map shows a separate enhanced tier such as 5G+, treat it as a separate layer rather than assuming the general 5G area includes it. Note when you checked the maps and revisit them before subscribing, since carrier maps can change.

Carrier maps use different categories and presentations, so compare what each legend actually says rather than comparing colours alone. For general context, see the CRTC’s Communications Market Reports — Current trends — Mobile wireless and its Canadian Telecommunications Market Report 2026. The CRTC reports population, technology and road measures separately; a national percentage is not a verdict on one address.

3. Separate home-network coverage from partner or extended coverage

Read the legend and any accompanying terms to find out whether a shaded area is served by the carrier’s own network, an extended-coverage arrangement, or a roaming partner. These categories are not automatically interchangeable: eligibility, usage limits, device support or settings may differ.

  • Rogers: Rogers describes Extended Coverage as available to select postpaid customers for limited occasional use. Check the current Rogers coverage map and the terms that apply to your plan.
  • Freedom Mobile: Freedom distinguishes its subscription area from its coverage area and describes Nationwide partners in its network support information. Check whether the places you rely on are within the subscription area or depend on partner coverage, and review any plan conditions.

Ask the carrier whether the coverage shown at an important location is native or partner-based and whether limits apply to your account.

4. Check that your phone and plan can use the mapped service

A 5G or 5G+ shading does not mean every phone or plan can connect to that layer. Check the exact model—not just the phone brand—with the carrier’s compatibility tool or support. Confirm relevant network-band support, VoLTE and roaming compatibility where applicable, and that your plan qualifies.

If your current phone fails a prospective carrier’s compatibility check, resolve that before relying on its map. Do not assume that an unlocked phone supports every carrier feature.

5. Treat mapped coverage as an estimate

A coverage polygon predicts expected service; it cannot establish what reception will be like in a particular room or at a precise spot. Rogers says actual service depends on factors including capacity, equipment, signal strength, topography and environmental conditions. Freedom also identifies terrain, foliage, capacity and weather, and says it cannot guarantee service. Indoor construction and congestion can further affect an individual connection.

For a high-stakes location, contact the carrier with the exact address or route and ask what kind of coverage is shown, whether the plan and device qualify, and what restrictions apply. If feasible, test service before porting your number or arrange overlap during the transition. A map alone cannot answer how well calls or data will work for you.

6. Use national coverage data as context, not a local answer

The CRTC’s 2026 reporting says 94% of Canada’s population had access to 5G, while rural and underserved coverage remained below urban levels. It also reports that more than 100,000 kilometres (87%) of major roads and highways were served by mobile networks. The road figure’s year-to-year change was tied to improved reporting and revised criteria for major provincial highways. These national measures do not establish coverage at a specific address, inside a building or on every stretch of a route.

The CRTC notes that apparent LTE coverage declines from 2020 to 2021 reflected improved accuracy in providers’ estimation models. A map or reported figure can change because the model changed, not necessarily because a network was withdrawn. For another broad view, Natural Resources Canada’s Atlas of Canada — Wireless Data Network shows LTE and 5G availability across Canada for 2013–2024; it is not a room-level or device-specific check.

7. Account for changes to Canadian coverage reporting

On October 2, 2026, the CRTC announced more detailed coverage reporting and a way for Canadians to flag locations where reported maps do not match their experience. The CRTC says rollout will begin with the next Annual Facilities Survey in early 2027, so the approach is announced and entering rollout rather than fully implemented. The CRTC provides coverage data to ISED for the National Broadband Map. See the CRTC announcement on improving cellphone coverage information for status and details.

Make the switching decision from your own comparison

For each carrier, record the result at every priority location and along each route. Keep these distinctions visible:

  • Same location and same technology layer.
  • Carrier network versus extended or partner coverage.
  • Phone and plan eligibility for the mapped service.
  • Route continuity, not just coverage at endpoints.
  • Potential indoor, terrain, foliage, capacity and weather effects.

Carrier population claims are not a substitute for this check: Freedom says its network covers 99% of the population, and Bell also claims 99% population coverage. Those are company claims, not independent, head-to-head findings for your address. With no particular address, route, phone model or shortlist, no carrier can be ranked for an individual reader.
