Neither upgrade is universally better: upgrade RAM if memory is the bottleneck in multitasking or large projects, and upgrade the SSD if you need more storage or your model supports adding or replacing a drive. The right choice depends on what is limiting you—and whether your exact ASUS laptop can be upgraded.
Choose the upgrade that matches the problem

Why RAM and SSD upgrades are not interchangeable
RAM is working space for what you are doing now
RAM holds information applications are actively using. More RAM may help when your work involves multiple open applications or large files, provided your laptop has memory that can be upgraded. Adding RAM does not increase the space available for installed applications or personal files.
An SSD stores the operating system, apps, and files
An SSD upgrade is relevant when storage capacity is the issue, or when a supported drive can be added or replaced. ASUS says SSDs generally offer faster startup, loading, and file access than an HDD; that general comparison does not show that replacing one SSD with another will noticeably speed up a laptop that already has an SSD.
Check your exact ASUS model before buying
Upgrade support and maximum specifications differ by model. ASUS advises owners to use the model’s Tech Specs to confirm whether memory or storage can be upgraded and what maximum specifications are supported. A product-family name alone may not identify the exact configuration, so find the complete model name or number first.

- Find the full model identifier. Use it to locate the matching ASUS product and support documentation, rather than relying only on a broad family name.
- Check the memory details. Confirm whether memory is soldered or has an accessible SO-DIMM slot, then match the supported memory type or generation, speed, slot availability, and maximum capacity.
- Check the storage details. Confirm the drive interface and physical format, supported capacity, and whether there is a free slot. If there is no free slot, an upgrade may require replacing the existing drive.
- Ask ASUS support or an authorized service provider if the specifications are unclear. ASUS’s support guidance also recommends consulting a local authorized service center about storage expansion.
ASUS’s support article illustrates why model-specific checks matter: its example has 8 GB of non-replaceable onboard memory plus an expandable SO-DIMM slot for up to 8 GB more, and lists a 512 GB M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD. Those are figures for the example in the ASUS memory and storage support FAQ, not universal limits for ASUS laptops.
What ASUS specifications look like on another model
The ASUS TUF Gaming A18 (2025) product page lists two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and dual M.2 PCIe Gen 4×4 SSD slots. It describes up to 32 GB DDR5-5600 memory per slot and up to 2 TB PCIe 4.0 storage per slot, subject to configuration details. The page also notes that maximum memory speeds vary by model and that one SSD slot is limited to Gen 4×2 on listed configurations. These specifications show how support can vary even within a product line; they should not be applied to another ASUS laptop.

What the available performance evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The ASUS sources give workload guidance and device specifications, but no head-to-head statistic comparing the performance gain from a RAM upgrade with the gain from an SSD upgrade across ASUS laptops. Capacity figures and general advice about multitasking or storage do not establish a percentage speed increase. Without your model, current configuration, symptoms, and workload, it is not possible to name a compatible part or say which upgrade will be better for your laptop.
