For a quick check, look at the cellular bars in your phone’s status bar. Android may also show a numeric signal reading in dBm, depending on the phone and software. Bars are not a dBm scale, and there is no verified universal iPhone menu or dial code for a numeric reading.
Check signal strength on an iPhone
Read the status-bar bars
Apple says the cellular bars in the status bar indicate signal strength. They provide a quick visual indication, not a numerical measurement: Apple does not publish a conversion from a given number of bars to dBm. The LTE or 5G label identifies a network technology, not signal strength. Apple’s iPhone status icons guide.
On a Dual SIM iPhone, the upper row of bars represents the line used for cellular data; the lower row represents the other line.
When the phone says “No Service” or “Searching”
Those messages mean the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network, rather than simply showing a low bar count. Apple recommends checking the connection and line settings, toggling Airplane Mode, restarting the phone, and checking for carrier settings updates. On a Dual SIM phone, make sure the intended line is enabled. If the issue persists, ask your carrier to check your account, local coverage, and outages. For iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help identify the source of an issue. These diagnostics are not a guaranteed numeric signal meter. Apple Support app diagnostics information.
Check signal strength on an Android phone
Start with the status bar
Check the cellular bars and data indicator. Google notes that Wi-Fi can hide the mobile-network generation indicator, such as 4G or 5G; turn Wi-Fi off if you need to inspect that cellular data indicator. If you see no signal or data indicator, try another area or go outdoors. If the problem recurs, contact your mobile provider. Google’s Android connectivity troubleshooting.

Look for a dBm reading, if your phone exposes one
Some Android phones expose signal details in their settings, but the exact menus and availability vary by manufacturer, device, and Android version. On Pixel phones, the mobile network settings are under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. That path opens SIM settings; it does not guarantee that every Pixel version shows a numeric signal reading. Check the settings for the specific SIM you use, especially on a multi-SIM phone. Google Pixel mobile network settings.
If your phone displays a value in dBm, Android defines it as a technology-specific signal-strength value based on the pilot signal or its equivalent. It is a reported radio measurement, not a direct promise of call quality or data speed. Android’s developer documentation describes the getDbm() signal-strength value.

How to compare readings usefully
To see whether reception changes, compare readings in the same place using the same phone and SIM. A reading from a different location, device, or SIM is not an apples-to-apples comparison. Treat bars as a convenient relative indicator and dBm as a numeric, technology-specific value; neither cited consumer guidance nor Android’s API documentation provides a universal cutoff that guarantees good service.

Troubleshoot weak or missing service
- Confirm the line and mobile settings. Make sure the SIM or eSIM you intend to use is enabled and mobile data is on. On Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs; other Android phones may use different labels. On iPhone, check the relevant line in cellular settings, particularly with Dual SIM.
- Refresh the connection. Toggle Airplane Mode, then turn it off. If that does not help, restart the phone. Apple includes these steps in its no-service guidance.
- Check another location. Move outdoors or to a different area to see whether the issue is local. Google recommends this when Android shows no signal or data indicator.
- Ask the carrier to investigate. If the problem continues, the carrier can check account status, coverage, and outages. A signal reading alone cannot establish which of those is responsible.
