Compare budget phones by checking three things on the exact model you plan to buy: how much software support remains, how its cameras perform in the situations you care about, and how long it lasts in a comparable battery test. There is no universal budget-phone winner: first set your country and spending limit, then weigh these factors against your priorities.

Set your market and budget before comparing phones

“Budget” has no universal price ceiling. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 US cheap-phone roundup uses $600 or less, while The Guardian’s September 2026 UK guide covers phones up to £600. Those are editorial cutoffs, not a shared definition of an affordable phone. Prices and availability differ by country and change over time, so compare models sold in your market at the price you can actually pay.

Decide whether you are buying new or used, too. For a used phone, the relevant question is not only how long the manufacturer promised updates at launch, but how much support remains on the day you buy it.

How long will this budget phone get updates?

Record the operating-system and security commitments separately. A phone may receive a certain number of major OS upgrades and have a different security-patch period or end date. Then calculate the time remaining from your intended purchase date.

  • Check the commitment for the exact model, including its variant and purchase market.
  • Look for both major OS upgrade terms and security-update duration or end date.
  • Use the manufacturer’s device-specific support information to confirm the commitment before buying; do not assume a budget phone inherits its maker’s flagship policy.

Policies can vary between manufacturers and product tiers. Android Authority’s overview gives context on differences among major companies, while Which? also discusses differing support windows and points readers to a support calculator: Android Authority’s phone update policies overview and Which?’s guide to choosing a phone that lasts.

For a dated UK example, The Guardian’s September 2026 guide lists the Samsung Galaxy A17 as receiving security support through 2031 and describes six years of support from release. Treat that as a market- and date-specific listing, not a guarantee for every variant or region; verify the official terms for the exact phone you are considering.

Which budget phone has the better camera?

Start with sample photos and independent review findings for the exact model, not the megapixel count. Megapixels describe image dimensions, not how good a photo looks. Compare the main, ultrawide, selfie and telephoto cameras separately, if present; an additional camera does not necessarily add much practical value.

Match the evidence to your use. Look for assessments of the conditions that matter to you, such as indoor and low-light scenes, moving subjects, skin tones, video stabilization or front-camera calls. A review that does not assess a particular condition cannot establish how a phone performs in it.

The examples below illustrate why camera specifications and findings need to be read together; they are not a controlled head-to-head ranking. Tech Advisor describes the Nothing Phone (4b)’s 50MP main camera as capable in most lighting but finds its 12MP ultrawide disappointing. The Guardian lists the Galaxy A17 with a 50MP wide camera, 5MP ultrawide and 2MP macro camera in its UK guide. See Tech Advisor’s budget-phone reviews and The Guardian’s September 2026 UK comparison.

How do I compare battery life between phones?

Prefer independent runtime results that name the test and its method. Battery capacity in mAh describes hardware; by itself, it does not tell you how long a phone lasts. Keep results from different test methods separate unless the methods are shown to be equivalent.

Tom’s Guide reports a battery-test time of 19 hours and 10 minutes for the Motorola Moto G (2026) in its 2026 coverage, calling it the best time posted by a cheap phone it had tested at publication. That is one publication’s result for that model, not a general budget-phone benchmark. The Guardian lists a PCMark battery result of 17 hours 24 minutes for the Samsung Galaxy A17 in its 2026 UK comparison. Because these are different reported tests and no equivalence between their methods is established, do not use the times to rank the phones against each other.

Tom’s Guide’s Moto G coverage also identifies slow wired charging as a trade-off. Its battery runtime does not, on its own, establish charging speed or whether you need to buy a charger. For context on the model and its test, see Tom’s Guide’s 2026 cheap-phone roundup; the Galaxy A17 result appears in The Guardian’s UK comparison.

A practical comparison workflow

  1. Set your buying conditions. Choose your country, maximum price, and whether you will buy new or used.
  2. Build a local shortlist. Include only models available to you at a price within that limit.
  3. Calculate support remaining. For each exact model, confirm official OS and security terms for your market, then count the time left from your intended purchase date.
  4. Compare camera evidence by use. Check samples or independent evaluations for your likely photos and videos. Weigh the main camera and secondary cameras separately.
  5. Compare battery tests carefully. Rank runtime only when the phones were assessed with the same published protocol. Otherwise, present each result with its test name and model rather than treating the numbers as directly comparable.
  6. Choose the trade-off that fits. Support may matter most if you keep a phone for years; camera output if you often take photos; tested runtime if you spend long stretches away from charging. Check local prices before making a recommendation.

How to read current phone examples without declaring a winner

Recent reviews offer useful individual examples, but they come from different markets and do not establish a single winner across support, cameras and battery life.

Phone and source context What the cited coverage reports What not to infer
Samsung Galaxy A17 — The Guardian’s UK guide, September 2026 Security support through 2031; 5,000mAh battery; PCMark battery result of 17 hours 24 minutes; rear cameras of 50MP wide, 5MP ultrawide and 2MP macro; guide price shown from £155.39. These are dated UK-guide details, not universal current prices, availability or support terms. Its PCMark result should not be ranked directly against a result from a different test protocol.
Motorola Moto G (2026) — Tom’s Guide’s US guide Tom’s Guide reports 19 hours and 10 minutes in its battery test and says the phone starts at $299. The publication describes its main and selfie cameras as surprisingly capable for a low-cost phone; it also notes slow wired charging and limited performance for demanding games. The battery figure is Tom’s Guide’s model-specific test result, not a general benchmark. The guide’s price and camera assessment do not establish availability or value in other markets.
Nothing Phone (4b) — Tech Advisor review Tech Advisor calls it a strong all-rounder under £300, reports three OS updates and six years of security patches, describes a strong tested battery experience, and finds the ultrawide camera weaker than the main camera. These are review findings and support details for the model and context discussed by Tech Advisor; verify current official support terms and local availability before buying.

The examples are drawn from separate UK and US coverage, so they are not one same-market shortlist. Tom’s Guide also treats camera types, battery life and software updates as buying considerations in its 2026 cheap-phone guide. Use reviews to inform a priority-based choice, not to claim a definitive cross-model ranking when the evidence is not directly comparable.
