If you need a DAW you can keep using for free, start with LMMS or Tracktion Waveform Free. If you can pay after evaluating the software, REAPER offers a 60-day full-function evaluation and a discounted license for eligible users. Ableton Live 12 Intro is a paid entry edition, while Ableton’s 30-day Suite trial is temporary—not a permanent free version.

There is no source-backed feature audit here that establishes a universal FL Studio replacement. Choose by your budget, preferred workflow, and operating system, then check the publisher’s current feature and system-requirement pages before installing.

Which option should you choose?

Choose LMMS for ongoing free use

LMMS’s official download page says the software is free to download and use. That makes it a clear starting point if your budget is zero and you want to avoid a trial deadline. The available official information does not establish feature-for-feature parity with FL Studio, so confirm that its current tools suit the projects you want to make.

Choose Waveform Free for a free edition with optional expansions

Tracktion lists Waveform Free 14 at $0 and identifies its included effects, utilities, and instruments. It also lists feature expansions starting at $30. Those expansions are optional; Waveform Free is distinct from Waveform Pro, which Tracktion lists separately as a paid product. This is a useful path if you want to begin without paying and consider specific additions only if you need them.

Choose REAPER if you expect to pay after evaluating

Cockos offers a 60-day full-function evaluation. Its purchase page lists a $60 discounted license for eligible users and a $225 commercial license. The $60 option is not universal: Cockos describes eligible cases including personal use, qualifying commercial users with yearly gross revenue no higher than USD 20,000, and educational or nonprofit organizations. Prices exclude VAT and/or local taxes. Review the REAPER purchase terms to determine which license applies to you.

Use trials as evaluations, not free long-term editions

Ableton’s free trial is for Live Suite and lasts 30 days. When it expires, users can still open trial sets but cannot save or export from that expired trial installation. That restriction makes it different from an ongoing free edition. Bitwig’s official site offers a 30-day Studio trial; the retrieved purchase result did not state a comparable current price, so check Bitwig’s live listing before treating it as a low-cost option.

How to compare DAWs for your projects

  • Ongoing cost: Separate software you can continue to use free of charge from time-limited trials and paid licenses.
  • Workflow: Consider whether you prefer pattern-based beat composition, recording and editing multitrack audio, or another approach. The cited official information does not support a complete apples-to-apples workflow ranking.
  • Included tools: Check the instruments, effects, utilities, track limits, and other features included in the exact edition you plan to use. Tracktion’s published counts apply to Waveform Free 14, not to every DAW in this comparison.
  • Upgrade path: Waveform Free has optional feature expansions listed from $30; do not confuse that with the separately sold Waveform Pro edition.
  • Platform: REAPER’s download page explicitly lists Windows, macOS, and Linux. Verify the current requirements for any other software on its publisher’s site.
  • License and taxes: Check eligibility rules, local taxes, and whether a displayed price applies to your region before buying.

What “alternative to FL Studio” can—and cannot—mean

A DAW can be an alternative because it fits your budget or workflow; that does not establish that it duplicates FL Studio’s features or project compatibility. The official pages cited here support specific facts about price, trial terms, selected included tools, and REAPER’s supported platforms. They do not provide a complete feature-by-feature comparison among these products. Before switching an existing project, verify the candidate DAW’s current documentation for the features and file formats you rely on.
