Chrome sync does not back up Downloads, and Windows desktop apps do not automatically transfer, so check both before relying on the Chromebook as your only computer.
1. Check what needs to move
Before changing anything, review the Windows laptop’s Desktop, Documents, Downloads and Pictures folders, along with folders used by specific apps. Identify files kept only on the laptop, such as saved projects or exported data. Chrome sync and file backup are separate tasks.
Also list the Windows programs, peripherals and workflows you depend on. Make a note of any specialized software, Office macros, fonts, printers or other devices that must work on the Chromebook.
2. Sync Chrome data from Windows
- On the Windows laptop, open Chrome and sign in with the Google Account you plan to use on the Chromebook.
- Review Chrome’s sync settings and select the data you want available, such as bookmarks, passwords, history and settings. Google’s Chrome sync guidance says selected data can sync to your account; work or school administrators may disable sync.
Downloads do not sync, so copy anything important in that folder separately. Google also notes that Wi-Fi networks may be included depending on sync settings. On Chromebook setup, bookmarks, extensions and apps can appear after sign-in, subject to sync settings, availability and organization policies.

3. Back up your files
Google recommends uploading files to Drive so you can access them on the Chromebook or another computer. You can instead use compatible removable storage, such as a USB thumb drive or external hard drive, or use another cloud-storage provider you already rely on.
| Transfer route | Useful when | Check before you start |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | You want the files available online and can upload them from Windows. | Check account storage, confirm uploads finish, and make sure you can access Drive from the Chromebook. Google says 15 GB is included at no charge with each Google Account and shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos; the cited page does not state a publication year. |
| USB thumb drive or external hard drive | You prefer offline copying or have more data than is convenient to upload. | Check the Chromebook’s port, the drive’s capacity and its filesystem. Google lists FAT-family formats, exFAT and NTFS among supported filesystems; file-type support can still vary. |
| Another cloud service | Your files are already stored with a provider you use. | Test access on the Chromebook, through the Files app where available or the provider’s website, and download a representative file. |
For removable storage, Google’s external storage guidance describes supported filesystems and file access. If choosing a USB drive, verify its connector and capacity against your Chromebook and files; it is optional if cloud transfer suits you.

4. Set up the Chromebook
- Connect the Chromebook to the internet.
- Choose the language and keyboard settings, then accept the terms shown during setup.
- Sign in with the Google Account used for Chrome sync and, if applicable, Drive. Google lists internet access and a Google Account as setup requirements; Guest browsing is available as an alternative for setup use.
Google’s Chromebook setup guide describes signing in and restoring account-linked items. If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, available settings and sync may be controlled by its administrator.
5. Retrieve files and verify the transfer
Files in Google Drive
Open the Files app on the Chromebook and locate your Drive files. Check that important folders and representative documents are present and accessible. Upload completion on Windows and an internet connection on the Chromebook matter for this route.

Files on removable storage
Connect the drive, open the Files app and open the files from the drive. If you want a local copy, copy the files into Chromebook storage. Test important files individually: a recognized drive does not guarantee that every file type will open.
Do not erase, recycle or repurpose the Windows laptop until you have verified the files you need on the Chromebook or another backup.

Microsoft Office files
Google says many Microsoft Office files can be opened, edited, downloaded or converted on Chromebooks. Options include Google Docs, Sheets and Slides or Microsoft 365, but supported features depend on the file and app. Google’s Office-file guidance says that in the described apps, files cannot be opened while offline, with only a basic editor available in that situation. Test representative documents—especially complex spreadsheets, macros and formatting—before moving essential work.

Other file types and devices

Its file compatibility guidance advises updating ChromeOS and using cloud storage or another computer for unsupported files. Test specialized peripherals, fonts and workflows directly rather than assuming Windows compatibility.
