When audio pauses or goes mute during a call, first identify what stopped: your microphone, the sound coming from the call, or other audio such as music and video. Check mute controls and selected devices before changing settings. Then use the app’s audio test and compare with another app or headset to pinpoint the cause.

Identify which audio has stopped

These symptoms involve different audio paths, so note what you experience before troubleshooting:

  • Others cannot hear you: Check the call’s microphone mute control, any physical mute switch, microphone selection, and microphone permission.
  • You cannot hear people in the call: Check the call app’s speaker selection, system output volume, and headset connection.
  • Music, video, or other audio pauses or mutes: Check whether the call app or headset is changing playback behavior. Bluetooth can behave differently when another app or device is also using audio.

Also note whether the issue occurs in one app or across several, and whether you are using Bluetooth, wired USB, or built-in audio. Those details help distinguish an app setting from a device or operating-system issue.

Start with the quick, reversible checks

  1. Check mute controls. Confirm you are not muted in the call app, and that the headset’s physical mute switch is off.
  2. Check volume and routing. Turn up the computer or phone’s output volume. In the call app’s audio settings, select the microphone and speaker you intend to use.
  3. Test both devices. Use the app’s built-in microphone and speaker tests or test call, if available. If the microphone is not listed, reconnect the device and check the operating system’s microphone permission.
  4. Test with other audio paused. If playback changes when you join a call with Bluetooth headphones, pause or close music, video, and other audio apps, then try again.
  5. Change one thing at a time. Try the computer’s built-in microphone and speaker, reconnect the headset, or test another headset. Retest after each change so you can tell what affected the symptom.

Check the app and operating system

If the problem happens in one app

Inspect that app’s selected input and output devices, mute controls, and microphone permission before reinstalling it. Run its test call or audio test if available. If the settings appear correct, restart and update the app. Zoom’s general guidance also recommends recording a message and playing it back to test the microphone, checking for driver updates, updating the operating system, and restarting the browser or device. Zoom’s audio troubleshooting guide provides its recommended checks.

If the problem happens in multiple apps

Check the operating system’s sound settings, selected input and output devices, volume mixer, microphone privacy permission, headset connection, and audio drivers. A permission or routing problem will not be fixed simply by changing headsets. If the issue disappears when you switch to built-in audio, reconnect the original device or test another headset to narrow down the connection or hardware path.

When Bluetooth headphones interrupt call audio

First pause or close other apps playing audio and retest. Zoom documents a specific Bluetooth behavior: “With Bluetooth connected, if other apps besides Zoom play audio during a Zoom meeting (such as an incoming phone call or music streaming), Zoom will stop the meeting’s audio and try to mute.” This explanation applies to the documented Zoom case; it should not be assumed to explain every app’s audio interruptions. Zoom Support’s Bluetooth headphones guidance also recommends disconnecting the headphones from other devices and reconnecting or pairing them again if needed.

If pausing other audio does not help, disconnect the headset from other paired devices and reconnect it to the device you are using for the call. A wired USB headset with a microphone can be a useful diagnostic alternative when the symptoms point to Bluetooth or the current headset. Zoom says supported USB devices are less likely to encounter audio issues. A different headset will not fix a muted meeting control, missing microphone permission, or incorrect software routing.

App-specific checks

Zoom

In the desktop app, check the meeting mute control and the headset’s physical mute switch. Open Zoom’s Audio settings, choose the intended microphone and speaker, adjust their volumes, and test each. If a device does not appear, check microphone access permissions. For Bluetooth interruptions caused by other apps’ audio, use the steps above; Zoom’s general audio troubleshooting guide and Bluetooth guide cover these checks.

Microsoft Teams

Teams lets you choose computer audio, phone audio, room audio, or no audio when joining. Choosing no audio means you join without meeting audio. In the app’s Devices or meeting audio settings, select the microphone and speaker you want; use Make a test call where available. Some controls may be unavailable because of organizer or IT administrator policy. See Microsoft’s Teams call settings guidance.

If nearby voices are unexpectedly filtered from your microphone, check whether Teams voice isolation is active. Microsoft’s recovery steps include reconnecting or changing the microphone, restarting or updating Teams, recreating the voice profile, or closing other apps if the device reports it is overloaded. For a narrower macOS issue—unclear participant audio or missing Teams notification sounds—Microsoft documents an audio-processing problem and says administrators can restart coreaudiod; other users can restart the Mac. This is a targeted workaround for that documented Teams/macOS symptom, not a general first troubleshooting step. Details are in Microsoft’s Teams known issues guidance.

Discord

Check microphone permission, input mode, selected input and output devices, and volume. On desktop or in a browser, also check browser compatibility and permissions; Discord’s desktop guide suggests resetting Voice & Video settings. On mobile, its troubleshooting guide recommends checking app and operating-system updates and permissions, turning off battery saver, and switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data as diagnostic steps. For iOS output trouble, confirm the intended output device; Discord describes selecting Bluetooth output through AirPlay. If you need to stay connected to Discord voice while using other apps, its guide also suggests testing CallKit integration. Menu names and availability can vary by version. When the basic checks do not solve it

  1. Compare devices. Switch to built-in audio or try another headset, changing only one variable at a time.
  2. Compare apps. Test the same microphone and speaker in another call app or with a microphone recording. If the issue follows the device, focus on system settings, permissions, connection, or drivers; if it stays in one app, focus on that app’s audio settings and updates.
  3. Restart and update. Restart the affected app or device and install available app, operating-system, and audio-driver updates.
  4. Contact app support if needed. Include the app and operating-system versions, whether you are using desktop, mobile, or browser, selected input and output devices, and what changed when you tested another device. Discord specifically asks for platform/version and device/settings details when submitting a support ticket.
