QSSR is Sony’s newly announced, PS5-targeted performance tier of AI upscaling; FSR and DLSS are not single, directly interchangeable alternatives. Their methods, hardware, versions, and game integrations differ. Sony announced QSSR on October 1, 2026, but the available information does not establish a controlled image-quality or performance winner against FSR or DLSS.

What Sony announced about QSSR

Sony describes Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) as a faster performance tier derived from PSSR and Project Amethyst, its AI-graphics collaboration with AMD. According to Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement, QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned for PS5. Sony says it is intended to improve detail and image stability on that console; those are Sony’s claims, not results from a published, matched benchmark.

Which PS5 games are named?

Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games, saying they were being patched to add QSSR as an additional graphics option. Sony also said the feature would be made broadly available to PlayStation developers. This is a developer-integrated option, not a system-wide switch that automatically changes every PS5 game. The announcement does not establish the current patch status of either game, so check the game’s settings and release notes for up-to-date support.

How QSSR relates to PSSR

PSSR is Sony’s upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement described an upgraded PSSR release for supported PS5 Pro games, with an optional system setting and a warning that results may vary by title. QSSR is the faster performance tier Sony announced for PS5; it should not be treated as identical to PSSR or its upgraded version. Sony’s announcement does not provide a controlled side-by-side test of QSSR and PSSR.

How QSSR, FSR, and DLSS differ

The name of an upscaler alone does not describe the exact method a game uses. FSR has different generations, while DLSS is a suite of features rather than just one upscaling mode. The table summarizes the distinctions documented in the relevant Sony, AMD, Microsoft, and NVIDIA materials.

Technology or version Documented approach Hardware or integration context
QSSR Sony describes a streamlined neural network and a PS5-tuned implementation intended to improve detail and stability. PS5 game option when a developer integrates it; support is title-dependent (Sony, Oct. 1, 2026).
PSSR and upgraded PSSR Sony describes PSSR as AI upscaling; its later PS5 Pro update is described as improving stability and fine detail. PS5 Pro; the upgraded setting applies to supported titles, and Sony says results can vary by game (Sony, Mar. 16, 2026).
FSR 1 Spatial upscaling from a current anti-aliased image, according to Microsoft’s Xbox GDK sample. Implementation depends on the game and platform. AMD documents FSR 1 access for Xbox developers through the Xbox GDK.
FSR 2 Temporal upscaling that uses multiple inputs and frame-to-frame information, replacing TAA in the game pipeline. Microsoft’s sample says its compute passes cost more than FSR 1’s. Microsoft’s cited sample is compatible with the March 2024 Update 1 GDK and includes Xbox Series X|S implementation details; it does not describe every current Xbox game.
Later ML-based FSR options AMD’s overview identifies later FSR options based on machine learning; do not assume they use the same implementation as FSR 1 or 2. AMD says support is limited to select products and games and requires developer integration; enablement depends on the title and integration.
DLSS Super Resolution Neural reconstruction of a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution game data. NVIDIA says DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution introduced a second-generation transformer model. Requires a supported game and GeForce RTX hardware. NVIDIA’s January 2026 announcement describes the model’s use of game-engine pixel sampling and motion data.

FSR is version-dependent

“FSR” on its own is too broad for a precise comparison. Microsoft’s Xbox developer sample distinguishes FSR 1, which is spatial, from FSR 2, which is temporal and replaces TAA in the described pipeline. The same sample says FSR 2 can provide significantly higher image quality than FSR 1 at higher upscaling ratios, but costs more compute. That comparison applies to those versions in that sample; it is not a ranking of every FSR release against QSSR or DLSS.

AMD’s current overview also covers ML-based FSR options. It describes support in select games and on select AMD products, with developers integrating the technology into their titles. Its enablement instructions distinguish natively integrated ML-based FSR from AMD Software options for certain games with FSR 3.1 or higher integration. A game’s version and implementation therefore matter as much as the FSR name.

DLSS includes more than upscaling

NVIDIA presents DLSS as a suite of neural-rendering features powered by RTX Tensor Cores. For an upscaler comparison, the relevant feature is Super Resolution: it reconstructs a higher-resolution image from lower-resolution game data. NVIDIA says its DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution model uses game-engine pixel sampling and motion data, and its January 2026 announcement describes the second-generation transformer model as available to GeForce RTX GPUs.

Keep the other DLSS features separate

  • Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation create additional frames; they are not the same operation as upscaling. NVIDIA specifies that Multi Frame Generation uses RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores.
  • Ray Reconstruction is another distinct DLSS feature, not an upscaling mode. Its support and hardware conditions should be checked separately for the game in question.
  • DLAA is also listed as part of the DLSS suite, but it is not a higher-resolution reconstruction mode to compare directly with QSSR or FSR upscaling.

Do not infer that every DLSS feature runs on every RTX card just because a game supports DLSS Super Resolution. Check the specific feature, game, and GPU generation.

How to compare them in a particular game

A useful comparison holds the game and rendering conditions as constant as possible. Use this checklist when evaluating footage, settings, or a performance test:

  1. Identify the exact implementation. Record the game, patch, platform, upscaler version, and selected mode. A feature name does not establish the version or how the developer tuned it.
  2. Record input and output resolution. Note the internal render resolution, output resolution, and quality preset. Reconstruction methods receiving different amounts of source detail are not being compared on equal terms.
  3. Inspect fine detail and edges. Look at hair, foliage, thin geometry, signage, and distant objects. Sony and its developers describe QSSR as improving detail, but those comments are not a controlled three-way result.
  4. Watch motion, not just still frames. Check for shimmer, ghosting, trails, disocclusion artifacts, and detail that changes as the camera or objects move. Sony describes stability benefits for QSSR and upgraded PSSR; NVIDIA describes stability and motion-clarity benefits for its newer model. These are vendor descriptions, not a common benchmark.
  5. Separate image reconstruction from frame generation. Record whether frame generation is enabled. Comparing generated-frame gameplay with a pure upscaling mode conflates two different features.
  6. Consider the performance cost in that title. Upscaling uses compute resources. Microsoft’s sample says FSR 2’s compute passes cost more than FSR 1’s, while Sony presents QSSR as a performance-tier adaptation for PS5. Neither statement gives a transferable frame-rate advantage; use game-specific measurements for that.

What the available comparison can—and cannot—establish

The official material establishes intended platforms, feature families, and some version-specific implementation details. It does not provide a controlled QSSR-versus-FSR-versus-DLSS test using the same game, patch, hardware conditions, internal and output resolutions, and settings. Sony’s QSSR announcement does not give a frame-time figure, percentage uplift, or image-quality score. No universal image-quality winner can be established from these descriptions.

For a practical choice, start with the feature the game actually supports on your platform, then compare its image and performance at the settings you intend to use. Treat vendor and developer descriptions as attributed claims, not as substitutes for a matched test.
