QSSR is Sony’s AI-upscaling tier for the standard PS5; PSSR is the higher-end tier for PS5 Pro. Sony describes QSSR as a streamlined implementation designed around the base console, not the same PSSR implementation made available on cheaper hardware. Both are intended to reconstruct a higher-resolution-looking image from a game’s rendered output, but support depends on each game, and Sony has not published a direct numerical QSSR-versus-PSSR quality or performance comparison.

These are Sony’s platform and implementation descriptions, not a controlled side-by-side test. The available official material establishes Sony’s tier positioning, but does not give a numerical ranking for image quality, frame rate, resolution gain, or processing cost.
What QSSR changes for standard PS5
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony calls it “a new performance tier of AI upscaling.” Its stated purpose is to bring AI-guided upscaling to the standard PS5 using a neural network architecture streamlined for that console and an implementation hand-tuned for its hardware. Sony ties the technology, like upgraded PSSR, to its collaboration with AMD known as Project Amethyst. That does not make QSSR a general AMD feature for other devices.
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability on standard PS5. Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions also describe clearer fine detail and steadier image reconstruction in their games. Those are vendor and developer claims; they do not establish that every scene or player will see the same benefit, or that QSSR matches PS5 Pro’s PSSR.

How PSSR differs on PS5 Pro
PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony introduced it as a PS5 Pro feature. Its description says the AI library analyzes each frame pixel by pixel to reconstruct the image. Sony’s upgraded PSSR revision changes both the neural network and the broader algorithm, and Sony continues to position PSSR as its top upscaling option on PS5 Pro.
In February 2026, Sony’s lead architect Mark Cerny said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date.” That is a dated Sony figure, not an independently audited current count. In June 2026, id Software described PSSR’s use in DOOM: The Dark Ages: its account discusses using motion, depth, exposure, and sub-pixel sampling information, and says fine details can hold together more consistently during fast motion and effects-heavy scenes. This is a developer explanation for one game, not a universal benchmark.

Which games support QSSR or PSSR?
QSSR support is added by individual games
Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games. Sony said patches for both would add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. It also said QSSR would be offered to PlayStation developers, with more games expected to adopt it. The two named games are first examples, not a complete compatibility list.
PSSR and upgraded PSSR are also title-dependent
Sony named Resident Evil Requiem in February 2026 as the first game using an advanced PSSR revision. In March 2026, Sony described an optional PS5 Pro setting called Enhance PSSR Image Quality. It lets players try upgraded PSSR in PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR; it does not add PSSR support to unsupported games. Sony cautioned that results can vary and unexpected visual effects are possible.

Sony’s March 2026 article discussed adoption or support for games including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Cyberpunk 2077. That list reflects Sony’s statement at the time; game patches and support can change. Check the current patch notes for a specific title rather than assuming a feature is available in every edition or build.
Does QSSR make a standard PS5 look like a PS5 Pro?
That is not established. QSSR gives the standard PS5 its own AI-upscaling implementation, while PSSR remains Sony’s higher-end PS5 Pro tier. Sony has published qualitative statements about detail and image stability, but no direct, controlled comparison that shows how closely QSSR matches PSSR or quantifies a gap between them. Game rendering settings, the selected graphics mode, and a title’s implementation also affect what appears on screen.

What to choose or check as a player
- You have a standard PS5: Look for a game patch or graphics option that explicitly identifies QSSR. You do not need a PS5 Pro just to use QSSR in a supported game.
- You have a PS5 Pro: Check whether the game supports PSSR. If it does, the console’s optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting may let you try the upgraded revision; Sony warns that results vary and visual effects can occur.
- You are comparing screenshots or modes: Compare the same game, scene, display, and graphics mode where possible. Sony’s general descriptions are not a substitute for a controlled QSSR-versus-PSSR comparison.
For hardware context, Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement explains that enhanced features are limited to select games and vary by title. The console is the hardware associated with PSSR; buying it is not required for QSSR on a compatible standard-PS5 game.
