An SSD that writes quickly at first and then slows during a large transfer may be behaving normally: its fast write cache can fill, leaving later data to be written at a lower sustained rate. If writes are slow from the start, reads are also slow, or the slowdown persists after the drive has had time to recover, check the entire transfer path and the drive’s health rather than assuming the cache is responsible.

Why SSD write speeds drop during a transfer

A full write cache

Some external drives use a cache to handle an initial burst of incoming data. When that cache fills, the drive may write more slowly for the remainder of a long transfer. Seagate describes this pattern for external drives, but the size of the cache and the rate after it fills depend on the specific model and workload. A short burst figure therefore does not necessarily predict sustained speed during a large copy. Seagate explains the factors that affect external-drive performance.

SLC-cache depletion on portable SSDs

Transcend identifies depleted SLC cache as one cause of slow writes on its portable SSDs. Its guidance also notes that repeated small-file writes can use cache blocks faster than they clear, and that larger-capacity models in its product family have larger SLC caches. Treat this as Transcend-specific guidance, not a rule that every higher-capacity SSD from every maker will write faster. Transcend’s portable SSD guidance describes this behavior.

Other limits in the transfer path

The SSD is only one part of a copy. The source drive, computer, USB port, cable, adapter, enclosure, and file workload can all affect the result. A slow source or a connection that cannot sustain the drive’s supported rate can make a fast SSD appear slow. Seagate and SanDisk both identify these external-transfer factors; SanDisk also advises using cables and adapters suited to high-speed data transfer. Seagate’s performance guidance and SanDisk’s troubleshooting guidance discuss them.

Diagnose the slowdown before changing anything

1. Identify when the slowdown begins

  • Fast at first, then slower during a large write: cache depletion is one plausible explanation.
  • Slow from the start: check the source, host, connection, and workload before attributing the result to cache behavior.
  • Reads are slow as well as writes: a full write cache alone is not a sufficient explanation. Seagate says the cache behavior covered in its external SSD guidance affects writes, not reads. Seagate’s cache-cleanup guidance distinguishes the read and write symptoms.

Compare like with like: a large sequential copy and a transfer containing many small files can behave differently. Note whether the slowdown repeats under the same conditions, and whether it happens with one source device or connection only.

2. Give a supported Seagate external SSD time to clean its cache

For the Seagate external SSDs covered by its instructions, leave the drive connected to a powered-on, awake computer and let it sit idle. Seagate says cache cleanup cannot occur while the drive is disconnected, the computer is powered off or asleep, or the drive is busy. This is model-specific guidance; do not assume every SSD uses the same cleanup behavior. See Seagate’s instructions for external SSD write performance.

3. Check the whole connection path

  1. Test a copy from a different source drive if available. If only one source is slow, the source or its connection may be limiting the transfer.
  2. Connect the SSD directly to a suitable host port, bypassing an adapter or hub where practical.
  3. Check that the cable and any adapter support the data rate required by both the computer port and the SSD. Replace a cable only if its rating or condition could be a bottleneck.
  4. Repeat with a representative workload. File size and type can affect transfer results, so compare similar files and amounts of data.

A higher-rated cable helps only if the existing cable is the limit and the host and drive support the faster connection. It cannot increase the SSD’s sustained NAND write rate or restore speed after a write cache is exhausted.

4. Check TRIM support before running retrim

TRIM lets compatible storage receive hints that data ranges are no longer needed. On Windows, Microsoft documents this example for retrimming a supported volume whose drive letter is H:

Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter H -ReTrim

Use the correct drive letter for your SSD. Microsoft says the default optimization for an SSD with TRIM support is retrim; it is a maintenance operation, not a guarantee that a slowdown will disappear. The storage path must support TRIM. Windows’ optimizer performs no operation for an SSD without TRIM support and for some removable or unknown volumes. Microsoft documents Optimize-Volume and its retrim behavior; its FSCTL_FILE_LEVEL_TRIM documentation explains how trim hints identify ranges that are no longer needed.

5. Use firmware updates only as directed for your model

Firmware can be one optimization area, but the available guidance does not establish that updating firmware improves every SSD or provide one procedure for all consumer drives. Check the manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact model before updating. SanDisk discusses firmware among SSD optimization topics, while Microsoft’s drive-firmware update guidance covers supported Windows Server paths and calls for risk-minimization planning for production updates. SanDisk’s SSD optimization guidance and Microsoft’s firmware update guidance define their respective scope.

When a slowdown may need support

Write and erase cycles wear SSD cells over time. SanDisk says an SSD with no life remaining can enter a read-only state, but the cited guidance does not provide a universal performance threshold for diagnosing failure. If a speed problem comes with errors or read-only behavior, preserve important data and contact the drive maker’s support before running intensive tests. SanDisk describes SSD endurance and wear information.

What to compare when choosing or evaluating an SSD

Factor What to look for
Burst versus sustained writes Check whether a quoted or measured speed describes a short burst or a long transfer. Cache size and post-cache rate vary by model; the available guidance does not establish a universal fastest model.
Workload Consider whether your typical job is a large sequential copy or many small-file writes; these can stress cache behavior differently.
Capacity and cache design Transcend says larger-capacity portable models in its family have larger SLC caches. That does not establish the same relationship across other brands.
Connection path Check the source, host port, cable, adapter, enclosure, and SSD together instead of assuming the drive itself is the bottleneck.
Read and write symptoms A full write cache can explain a write slowdown in the Seagate guidance cited above; a concurrent read slowdown calls for other checks.

The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal safe free-space percentage, temperature threshold, target speed, or model ranking. Use the specifications and troubleshooting instructions for the exact SSD when those details matter.
