There is no single best iPhone camera preset: choose settings for the shot you want. For most people, the useful changes are to adjust focus and exposure when needed, select photo and video quality with storage in mind, use low-light or stabilization features only when they help, and preserve the controls you regularly change. Menu names and availability vary by iPhone model and iOS version, so use the options that appear on your device.
Which settings make the biggest difference?
- For a brighter or darker shot: tap the subject to focus, then adjust exposure on screen.
- For more captured detail: choose a higher supported photo resolution, or use ProRAW if you plan to edit and accept larger files.
- For video: select resolution and frame rate based on detail, motion, low-light conditions and storage.
- For moving footage: try Action mode on supported models; for dim scenes, Auto FPS can reduce the frame rate automatically on supported iPhones.
- For a repeatable workflow: use Preserve Settings for controls you want to keep between Camera sessions.
These are choices, not universal upgrades. Higher resolution, RAW capture and faster video rates can increase file size, while some modes trade flexibility or low-light behavior for a particular result.
How should you set focus and exposure?
iPhone normally chooses focus and exposure automatically. Tap the subject on the screen to move the focus point. If the image looks too bright or too dark, adjust the exposure control that appears beside the focus area. Exposure changes brightness; it does not make an out-of-focus subject sharp.
To hold both focus and exposure for a shot, touch and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears. This is useful when the framing or lighting might otherwise cause the camera to recalculate while you compose. Tap elsewhere to release the lock. Apple also lists Exposure Adjustment among the choices that can be retained with Preserve Settings on supported devices.

Which photo resolution and format should you use?
On supported models, go to Settings > Camera > Formats > Photo Mode to choose a default such as 12 MP or 24 MP for the Main or Fusion camera. Some models also offer 48 MP capture through Resolution Control or ProRAW & Resolution Control. Exact options depend on the iPhone.

Apple describes ProRAW as combining standard RAW information with iPhone image processing. It can give an editor more latitude, but it is not a required everyday setting and does not guarantee a better automatic-looking photo. See Apple’s ProRAW guide for supported formats and details.

Other format controls serve different purposes. Lens Correction adjusts photos from the front or Ultra Wide camera on supported iPhones. Prioritize Faster Shooting changes processing behavior to allow more photos when you tap the shutter rapidly. If you value a burst of moments more than processing emphasis, that option may suit you; it is not a general image-quality switch. Apple lists these options in its advanced camera settings guide.
How should you choose video resolution and frame rate?
Use the Camera app’s video controls or go to Settings > Camera > Record Video to select a supported default. Depending on the iPhone, options can include HD or 4K and frame rates such as 24, 25, 30, 60 or 120 fps; no single device necessarily offers every combination.

Auto FPS is intended to improve low-light video by automatically lowering the frame rate to 24 fps on supported phones. Depending on model, it may apply to 30 fps video or to both 30 and 60 fps. Find it under Settings > Camera > Record Video if your device supports it; Apple’s video recording guide describes the available choices. Test it in the kind of lighting you actually record in, since a reduced frame rate affects how motion appears.
When should you use Action mode or Macro?
Action mode for movement
Action mode improves stabilization while recording video on supported iPhones. Use it when keeping moving footage steady matters more than sticking with the standard recording mode. It is a model-dependent option, not a setting that every iPhone has; check the Camera interface and Apple’s video guide.

Macro for close-ups
On supported models, iPhone can automatically switch to the Ultra Wide camera for macro close-ups. Apple says the camera can focus as close as 2 centimeters. If a close subject looks blurry, back the phone away or tap 0.5x to switch to Ultra Wide. Macro Control, including the ability to manage the automatic switching behavior, is not available on every model. See Apple’s macro photo and video guidance.

Open Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings to choose which supported controls remain set between sessions. Apple lists options that may include Camera Mode, Photographic Style, Creative Controls, Depth Control, Macro Control, Exposure Adjustment, Night Mode, Portrait Zoom, Action Mode, ProRAW & Resolution Control, Apple ProRes and Live Photo. The list varies by model.

Enable only the settings you repeatedly change and want to keep. This helps when the Camera app’s normal reset behavior interrupts a specific workflow, while leaving other choices free to return to their usual defaults. Apple documents the available controls in its Preserve Camera Settings guide.
What should you leave on automatic?
Keep automatic behavior when you want the phone to make routine decisions and do not have a consistent reason to override it. Change focus, exposure, resolution or frame rate when the particular scene or intended use calls for it. Apple’s feature pages describe which controls exist, but the right choice between storage, detail, motion and low-light behavior depends on your own shot and device.
For time-lapse, the most useful adjustment may be physical stability rather than a menu setting: Apple recommends placing the iPhone on a stable surface or tripod. That advice applies to time-lapse framing, not ordinary photo or video setup.
