Start by cleaning the front and rear camera lenses, removing anything that might cover or magnetically interfere with a camera, and tapping the subject you want sharp in the Camera viewfinder. If blur happens only at very close range, back up or use 0.5× on a supported model; in dim light, keep the iPhone steady. If those checks do not help, restart and update iOS, then test each camera separately.
Start with the kind of blur you see
Blur does not always mean the iPhone failed to focus. The subject may not be selected, the phone may have moved in low light, a close-up may have triggered macro camera switching, or something may be obstructing a lens. Work through the symptom that best matches your photo before assuming the camera is damaged.

Clean the lenses and remove obstructions
Wipe the front and rear camera lenses with a soft microfiber cloth. Apple Support’s instruction is: “If the photo is blurry, clean the front and back camera lenses with a microfiber cloth.” Apple’s camera and flash troubleshooting guide also recommends removing cases, film, or accessories that might block a camera or flash, and removing accessories or mounts that place a magnet near the camera.
- Remove the case, lens cover, film, lens converter, or magnetic mount.
- Clean the front and rear camera lenses gently with a microfiber cloth.
- Take a test photo without the removed accessories.
Some supported iPhone models can show a hint when a lens needs cleaning. This is not available on every model; see Apple’s advanced camera settings guide for model-specific details.

Tell the camera what should be sharp
iPhone automatically sets focus and exposure, but you can move the focus area by tapping the intended subject in the viewfinder. If focus or exposure keeps changing, touch and hold the subject until AE/AF Lock appears. Tap elsewhere to unlock and choose a different subject. Apple explains these controls in its iPhone camera tools guide.
Manual focus-distance control is documented for iPhone 18 Pro models; do not expect that control on every iPhone. On other models, tapping the subject and using AE/AF Lock are the relevant built-in focus controls.

For close-ups, give the camera enough room
On supported iPhones, Camera automatically switches to the Ultra Wide camera for macro photography, which can capture subjects as close as 2 cm. If a close-up turns blurry, move the phone back slightly or tap 0.5× to switch to Ultra Wide when that control is available. The exact macro controls vary by model. See Apple’s macro photography guide.
Reduce movement blur in low light
In dim conditions, hold the iPhone steady when taking a photo, especially while Night mode is active. Apple recommends keeping the phone still for best Night mode results. A blurred low-light image does not by itself establish that the camera missed focus; movement and focus are different possible causes.

Restart, update, and test each camera
If cleaning, removing accessories, selecting the subject, and adjusting distance do not resolve the issue, follow Apple’s remaining basic checks:
- Restart the iPhone.
- Install the latest iOS update available for your device.
- Take separate test photos with the front and rear cameras.
Testing the cameras separately can help establish whether the problem affects one camera or both, but it does not identify a failed component. Apple’s full steps are in its camera and flash troubleshooting guide.

When to seek camera service
If the camera still does not work correctly after these checks, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple says professional repair using genuine Apple camera parts is the safest and most reliable option for most customers; repair options vary by location. Blur alone is not enough to diagnose which part, if any, needs repair. See Apple’s guidance on genuine iPhone cameras.
