To compare QSSR with a game’s native-resolution option on PS5, keep the console’s video output, TV settings, viewing position, and in-game scene the same; change only the game’s graphics option. This lets you judge the difference on your existing setup without confusing an image change with a TV adjustment.

What QSSR means on PS5

Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s AI-guided upscaling technology for standard PS5. Sony says it grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and uses a streamlined neural-network architecture with a hand-tuned implementation intended to make efficient use of PS5 performance. Sony describes its aims as improving image detail and stability; those are qualitative claims, not a measured guarantee for every game or scene. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. It is a game-level feature, not an option available in every PS5 game.

Set up a fair comparison without changing the TV

  1. Choose a game and mode. Use a current game version that offers QSSR and a native-resolution option, or another clearly named mode you want to compare. Note the game, patch or version if available, PS5 model, and selected graphics mode.
  2. Keep the TV setup fixed. Do not change the TV’s picture mode, sharpness, motion processing, HDR configuration, HDMI connection, or your seating position between observations.
  3. Keep PS5 video output fixed. Check the console’s output information at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Leave its resolution and refresh-related settings unchanged while comparing. PlayStation Support explains that the console detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically; 1440p output requires a display that supports 1440p. See PlayStation’s instructions for changing PS5 resolution.
  4. Return to the same game scene. Match the camera angle and, as far as possible, the scene’s motion and in-game mode. Toggle only the game’s QSSR/native or other named graphics option, then revisit the same view.
  5. Switch back and repeat. Let the scene settle after each change and compare more than one pass. This helps distinguish a consistent visual difference from a momentary effect or a change caused by the scene itself.

This is a practical viewing method, not a Sony-prescribed test protocol. The PS5 menu path and 1440p compatibility note come from PlayStation Support; keeping the other conditions fixed is what makes the comparison useful on your own setup.

What to look for in each mode

Assess these qualities separately instead of relying on a single paused frame:

  • Fine detail: Look at small environmental features, textures, and distant objects.
  • Edges: Check whether outlines appear clean or show visible jaggedness or softness.
  • Stability in motion: Watch fine patterns and edges as the camera or characters move. Note shimmering or detail that appears to shift between frames.
  • Reconstruction artifacts: Look for distracting visual irregularities around fine detail, motion, or complex patterns.
  • Performance, if measurable: Record frame pacing or performance only if you have a way to measure it. Do not infer a frame-rate change from image quality alone.
  • Output signal: Record the PS5 output information so another graphics mode or output change is not mistaken for a QSSR effect.

If the game offers several graphics modes, compare modes with similar intent rather than treating every available setting as a direct QSSR-versus-native test. A mode change that also alters performance targets or other rendering choices can affect what you see, so record the exact options used.

What the comparison can—and cannot—establish

Sony says QSSR is intended to improve image detail and stability, and Insomniac Games says it adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Those statements describe the developers’ aims and experience; Sony’s announcement does not publish a controlled QSSR-versus-native comparison. It gives no per-game internal-resolution measurements, pixel-count analysis, quantified image-quality score, or measured frame-rate result.

As a result, your viewing comparison can tell you which presentation you prefer in the scene and setup you tested, but it cannot prove that QSSR is always better than native rendering or establish a universal performance result. If you share what you saw, include the game and version, PS5 model, graphics option, scene, and output conditions; describe it as an observation rather than a lab measurement unless the test was instrumented and controlled as one.
