Crypto remittances can involve more than a blockchain fee. The sender may pay to fund or buy crypto, a provider may build a charge into its exchange rate, and the recipient may face conversion, withdrawal, or payout costs. To judge whether a route is actually cheaper, compare the total sender cost and the amount the recipient is expected to receive for the same countries, payment methods, and currency.
What costs can make up a crypto remittance?
A crypto transfer is often one link in a payment chain, not the whole journey from the sender’s bank account to the recipient’s usable money. Which costs apply depends on the provider, asset, blockchain, country corridor, and cash-out method.
- Funding or purchase: A sender may pay a bank, card, or service charge to add money or buy crypto. Charges depend on the provider and funding method; there is no single fee that applies to all routes.
- Conversion spread: A provider’s retail exchange rate may differ from a wholesale reference rate. That difference is a cost even when the provider advertises no separate transfer fee. The CFPB describes a spread as the percentage difference between the retail rate offered to a consumer and a wholesale rate (CFPB Circular 2024-02).
- Blockchain network fee: A transaction on a permissionless blockchain incurs a network fee. It is distinct from a service provider’s own charge, and its amount depends on the network and transaction. The IMF discusses network fees in its 2023 crypto-assets policy paper.
- Exchange or platform withdrawal fee: A custodial exchange or platform may charge to withdraw crypto, separately from the network fee. As one provider-specific example, Binance.US says it displays the network fee and any applicable exchange withdrawal fee before confirmation; that is not a universal policy or fee schedule (Binance.US help article).
- Off-ramp conversion: The recipient or a payout provider may convert crypto into local currency, using a rate or charging a fee. The CFPB warns that conversion costs can be overlooked when services are marketed as free (CFPB Circular 2024-02).
- Recipient withdrawal or payout: Moving the resulting balance to a bank, card, or cash pickup can add another charge or deduction. Digital-wallet remittances may carry conversion and withdrawal costs as well as any transfer fee, according to the CFPB guidance above.
- Third-party charges and taxes: Other institutions, agents, or government taxes may affect the final amount. Include disclosed charges that apply to the specific route.
Stablecoins do not remove these possible stages. A cross-border stablecoin arrangement can involve funding, wallets or service providers, and off-ramp or disbursement steps; a particular product may use only some of them. The BIS describes these dependencies in its paper on stablecoin arrangements in cross-border payments.
Why a low network fee does not prove a transfer is cheap
The network fee covers a blockchain transaction; it does not necessarily cover buying the asset, withdrawing it from a platform, converting it into the recipient’s currency, or paying it out. An exchange-rate markup can also reduce the recipient’s amount without appearing as a separate fee. A “free” or “no fee” headline therefore does not establish the total cost: the CFPB has warned that marketing may be misleading when spreads, conversion, or withdrawal expenses are left out (CFPB summary of its action on “free” transfer claims).

There is no single current crypto remittance price that applies across providers and corridors. Network and provider charges can change, and the recipient’s cash-out method can change the net result. Do not treat an old or generic network-fee figure as a quote for a current transaction.
How to compare the total cost of two routes
Use equivalent transactions: the same send amount, origin and destination countries, funding method, asset and network where relevant, recipient currency, and payout method. Then compare the quote’s costs and outcome rather than comparing one advertised fee.

For covered U.S. remittance transfers, CFPB guidance describes pre-payment disclosures that include applicable fees and taxes, the exchange rate, total transaction amount, covered third-party fees, and the amount expected at destination. The CFPB says U.S. remittance rules generally protect consumers using a qualifying provider to send more than $15 internationally; that figure is a legal-scope threshold, not a fee (CFPB guidance on remittance transfers and rights). These points concern the U.S. framework, not legal advice for every country or every crypto service.
As additional comparison dimensions, OECD transparency guidance identifies total transaction cost, currency-conversion charges, expected delivery time, payment-status tracking, and terms. It describes useful transparency goals, not a guarantee that every provider or jurisdiction supplies all of them (OECD guidance on transparency in retail cross-border payments).

What the available figures can—and cannot—tell you
The cited sources do not establish a current, generally applicable price for sending crypto internationally. The IMF’s 2023 paper cites an average fee of 5.7% for a $200 remittance in 2020, based on Beck, Janfils, and Kpodar (2022). That is a historical figure for remittances, not a current crypto-transfer quote or a like-for-like comparison of a particular route (IMF paper).
For a real transfer, use the current transaction preview for the exact corridor and payout method. The useful result is not the smallest fee line: it is how much the sender pays and how much the recipient receives under equivalent conditions.
