Choose photogrammetry when you need a conventional point cloud or mesh for editing, measurement workflows, or simulation. Choose 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) when you want a convincing, navigable visual record of a scene. A photorealistic splat is not necessarily a clean or accurate surface model, and neither method is a universal winner.

What is the difference between Gaussian Splatting and photogrammetry?

Photogrammetry uses overlapping photographs to infer 3D structure. A typical pipeline estimates camera positions and sparse structure through structure from motion (SfM), then builds denser geometry through multi-view stereo (MVS). The resulting point cloud or mesh can be used in established 3D workflows. COLMAP’s documentation describes this SfM-and-MVS approach and its geometry outputs.

3D Gaussian Splatting instead represents a scene as optimized 3D Gaussians for rendering views from new camera positions. The original method starts with sparse points generated during camera calibration and is designed for interactive novel-view rendering. The two approaches can share photographs and camera-estimation components, but their primary outputs differ: geometry in the photogrammetry workflow, and a view-synthesis representation in 3DGS. The original 3DGS paper describes the method and its rendering focus.

Which output do you need?

Choose photogrammetry for editable geometry

Use photogrammetry if the scan needs to become a conventional surface model or point cloud for modeling, inspection, or physics simulation. Meshes fit established CGI and geometry pipelines more directly than raw splats. That does not make every photogrammetric scan accurate: metric reliability depends on scale control, camera calibration, image coverage, surface texture, and validation. Casual photographs alone do not establish survey-grade measurements.

Choose 3DGS for scene appearance and free-viewpoint viewing

Use a splat when viewers need to move around a captured scene and visual appearance matters more than a clean, watertight surface. Recent comparisons report strong appearance and real-time view synthesis on their tested scenes, but do not establish that splats are universally more geometrically accurate.

Use both when a project needs both

A project may retain a photogrammetric mesh for geometry and create a splat for immersive viewing. Converting a splat into a mesh is a separate workflow, not a free change of format; extraction can introduce surface or texture artifacts and should be validated for the intended use.

How do they compare in practice?

Decision factor Photogrammetry 3D Gaussian Splatting
Primary strength Produces point clouds and meshes suited to established geometry workflows. Designed to synthesize convincing views from new camera positions.
Best fit Editing, inspection, measurement workflows, and physics simulation; measurement quality still requires appropriate scale, capture, and validation. Visual records, scene presentation, and free-viewpoint navigation where surface editing is not the main goal.
Typical failure signs Holes in the mesh, incomplete coverage, or texture problems; reported in the tested workflows of the 2025 room/backdrop study. Floaters or color flicker; reported in the tested workflows of the 2025 room/backdrop study.
Speed evidence No universal end-to-end speed comparison is established by the cited studies. The original 2023 paper reported 100 fps or above at 1080p for novel-view rendering on its evaluated method; this is not a capture or optimization-time guarantee.

What can go wrong during capture?

Both methods need useful images and camera information. Missing viewpoints and inadequate overlap can leave gaps or weaken reconstruction. Textureless areas are difficult for image matching; moving objects and changing sunlight can make images inconsistent; reflections and glass can confuse reconstruction or produce unstable-looking results. The exact symptoms depend on the scene and algorithm: the 2025 study, for example, reported splat floaters and color flicker as well as mesh holes and texture problems in its tested workflows.

  • Plan coverage: capture the scene from enough viewpoints, including tight areas that are easy to miss. A 2025 smartphone room-capture pilot described complete coverage as demanding and noted that tight rooms required many shots.
  • Be cautious with difficult surfaces: glass, reflections, low-texture areas, moving subjects, and changing illumination can undermine either workflow.
  • Validate the result for its use: a visually persuasive render does not demonstrate measurement accuracy; inspect geometry and verify scale when those matter.

What do published comparisons actually show?

In a 2025 pilot by Haslbauer, Pullen, Reichherzer, and Smolic, Gaussian splatting received a mean scene rating of 3.21/5, a 2DGS-derived mesh 1.86/5, and RealityCapture photogrammetry 1.50/5. These are visual ratings across seven selected room and backdrop scenes, not general quality scores or measurements of geometric accuracy. The study used an iPhone 14 Pro, and its observations about wider-lens captures and the demands of tight-room coverage should not be treated as universal camera advice. A 2026 cultural-heritage comparison found geometric-accuracy differences especially pronounced for small-scale datasets or low-resolution inputs. It examined two representative datasets, so its result is relevant evidence for those conditions rather than a universal benchmark. It does not provide one cross-topic accuracy number that can rank every scan. Read the 2026 ISPRS cultural-heritage comparison.

Results can also change by domain. In one tested near-nadir aerial-imagery setup, traditional COLMAP outperformed the compared Nerfacto and Splatfacto approaches in less-textured areas, high vegetation, shadows, and areas seen from few views. That finding applies to the study’s dataset and capture arrangement, not every aerial scan. Read the aerial-imagery comparison.

Can you make a 3D scan with a phone?

Yes, smartphone photographs have been used in a studied room-capture workflow: the 2025 pilot used an iPhone 14 Pro. That establishes that a phone can be part of a capture workflow, not that every phone, subject, or scene will produce equally good results. Coverage and capture conditions still matter. A phone mount or tripod may be a convenience for keeping a device steady, but the cited study did not test accessories or show that they improve accuracy.

Which software supports these workflows?

  • COLMAP is a free, open-source SfM/MVS pipeline for photogrammetry and geometry reconstruction.
  • Nerfstudio documents Splatfacto and Splatfacto-W, with guides covering data processing, training, viewing, geometry export, and Unreal Engine export.
  • RealityCapture and Postshot appeared in the 2025 comparison; Postshot and LichtFeld Studio were discussed in the 2026 heritage comparison. Those mentions do not establish a current feature, hardware, price, or licensing comparison.

Software capabilities, system requirements, prices, and licensing can change; consult the relevant project or vendor documentation before choosing a tool.

How should you decide?

  1. Write down the deliverable. If you need an editable surface or geometry for simulation or inspection, start with photogrammetry. If you mainly need navigable visual presentation, start with 3DGS.
  2. Check capture conditions. Consider whether the scene has enough texture and viewpoints, and whether reflections, glass, motion, shadows, or changing light will make stable capture difficult.
  3. Set the evidence standard. For measurement, define scale and validation requirements instead of assuming that a detailed-looking result is metrically reliable.
  4. Test the relevant failure modes. Compare representative captures from your own scene, checking geometry for a mesh workflow and view consistency for a splat workflow.
  5. Combine outputs only if both are needed. Keep the geometry and presentation workflows distinct, and validate any conversion rather than assuming one representation substitutes cleanly for the other.
