Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore you erase an iPhone or iPad, make a fresh backup and confirm it finished. You can back up to iCloud or to a Mac or PC; choose the option you can verify and later access. Apple’s restore process uses the backup you select during setup or in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Apple’s backup guide and restore guide cover both routes.
Choose iCloud or a computer backup
| Method | What you need | Best fit | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud | Wi-Fi, enough available iCloud storage, and access to the Apple Account used for the backup. | You want a backup that can run automatically and restore over Wi-Fi. | Content may continue downloading after the restore progress bar finishes. If iCloud storage is insufficient, follow the on-screen option to buy more storage. Apple iCloud backup instructions |
| Computer | A Mac or PC, a compatible USB data cable, and enough computer storage for the backup. | You prefer a local copy or have limited iCloud space. | On Windows, Apple recommends selecting “Encrypt local backup” for encryption. You must retain that password to restore the encrypted copy. Apple backup guidance; Apple Devices for Windows guide |
For computer backups, use Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on Windows, or iTunes on Windows PCs without Apple Devices and on Macs running macOS Mojave or earlier. Your device and computer may have different connectors, so use a compatible data cable rather than assuming one connector type applies to every setup. Apple’s backup guide
Make and verify a fresh backup
Back up to iCloud
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now and stay connected to Wi-Fi until the operation completes.
- Check the last-backup date and time shown below the control before erasing the device.
For automatic iCloud backups, turn on iCloud Backup and leave the device connected to power, connected to Wi-Fi, and locked. Apple’s iCloud backup instructions
Back up to a Mac or PC
- Connect the device to the computer with a compatible USB data cable. Respond to any trust or passcode prompts on the device.
- Open Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on Windows, or iTunes where applicable, then select your device.
- Start a backup and wait for the process to finish before disconnecting or erasing the device.
- If you choose Encrypt local backup, create and securely save its password somewhere you can retrieve it. Apple warns that an encrypted backup cannot be restored without its password; if you forget it, earlier encrypted backups cannot be used.
Before erasing, confirm you can access the Apple Account used for iCloud backups and purchases. During restoration, you may be asked to sign in. The computer restore screen presents backups with dates and sizes, which can help you identify the copy you just made. Apple backup guidance; Apple restore guidance

Restore an iPhone or iPad from iCloud
- Turn on the device and proceed through setup to Transfer Your Apps & Data.
- Choose From iCloud Backup and sign in to the Apple Account associated with the backup.
- Review the available backup dates and sizes, then select the suitable backup.
- If setup says newer software is required, follow the on-screen update steps.
- Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi until the progress bar completes. If Wi-Fi disconnects, restoration pauses until the connection returns.
- Sign in to accounts for purchases if prompted, then leave the device connected to Wi-Fi and power as apps, photos, music, and other information continue downloading.
Apple says follow-on downloads can take hours or days, depending on how much information is being restored. A device that has already been set up must be erased before you can use the setup-assistant iCloud restore steps. Apple also cautions that setting up as new and allowing new iCloud backups to be created can overwrite previously saved iCloud backups; if you intend to use an older backup, erase and restore from it promptly. If a backup or restore does not work
iCloud restore fails, pauses, or cannot find the backup
- Connect the device to power and Wi-Fi. iCloud restoration cannot use cellular internet.
- Try another Wi-Fi network or another available backup if the selected backup fails or is absent.
- Check the device’s software version. A backup may require a newer iOS or iPadOS release; Apple provides a route to update first and then erase before retrying a restore that requires newer software.
