If your iPhone or iPad is stuck on the “Connect to computer” or Restore screen, first try the force-restart sequence for your exact model. If it returns to recovery mode, connect it directly to a computer and choose Update before Restore. Update reinstalls iOS or iPadOS while keeping personal data; Restore erases the device.
1. Try a force restart
A force restart attempts to start the device normally; it is not the same as entering recovery mode. Identify your model or whether your iPad has a Home button, then follow the matching sequence. Hold the final button until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone
- iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later): Quickly press and release Volume Up, then quickly press and release Volume Down. Hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Hold the Side (or Top) button and Volume Down together until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): Hold the Home button and Side (or Top) button together until the Apple logo appears.
iPad
- Without a Home button: Quickly press and release the volume button closest to the Top button, then quickly press and release the one furthest from it. Hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears.
- With a Home button: Hold the Home and Top buttons together until the Apple logo appears.
If the Restore or Connect to computer screen remains, use a computer-assisted update. To enter recovery mode again, follow Apple’s model-specific button instructions and hold until the recovery screen appears: iPhone instructions, iPad instructions, or Restore screen instructions.
2. Connect to a computer and choose Update
- Open the right app. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, open Finder. On macOS Mojave or earlier, Apple’s instructions use iTunes. On a PC, use the current Apple Devices app or iTunes as applicable.
- Connect the device directly. Use a USB cable connected to the computer, not a keyboard or USB hub. Open the device in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.
- Choose Update. When prompted to Update or Restore, choose Update first if you have not already tried it. Apple says Update reinstalls the system while keeping personal data.
- Leave it connected. Keep the device connected while the software installs. If the download takes more than 15 minutes and the device leaves the recovery screen, let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode connection steps. Apple describes this timing in its iPhone and iPad recovery instructions.
3. Know what Restore does before selecting it
Restore reinstalls iOS or iPadOS and erases all data on the device. Apple states, “Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all your data.” Use Restore if Update fails or Apple’s instructions for your situation specifically direct you to restore. Afterward, set up the device and restore from a backup if one is available. Apple’s iPhone restore guidance explains the distinction.

4. Fix connection errors
Errors 9, 4005, 4013, or 4014 may appear if the device disconnects during an update or the computer loses its connection during a restore, according to Apple. Try these steps if the update or restore stops with an error:
- Update the computer’s operating system and restart both the computer and device.
- Connect directly to a different USB port. If the error continues, try another compatible USB data cable; check that its connector matches your device.
- Try another computer, preferably using a different network.
- Check whether security software is interfering with the connection.
- Repeat the recovery workflow and choose Update when offered.

5. Check for iOS Recovery on supported devices
Apple’s support page published September 24, 2026, says iOS Recovery is available on iOS 27. It may start after an incomplete update or restore, or when the device detects a stability issue. Do not expect these on-device choices on older iOS versions or on every device.
- Recovery Assistant: Requires a passcode and Wi-Fi.
- Software Update using another nearby iPhone or iPad: Requires a passcode.
- Diagnostics Mode: Requires Wi-Fi.
- Erase All Content and Settings: Requires a passcode and deletes data.
- Recovery Mode: Requires a connection to a computer.

6. When to contact Apple or arrange service
Contact Apple or seek service if a recovery-mode update or restore fails, the Restore screen keeps returning after the restart and reinstall steps, or a button needed for the process does not work or is stuck. Apple also advises contacting support if troubleshooting for errors 9, 4005, 4013, or 4014 does not resolve the problem: iPhone recovery guidance, iPad recovery guidance, and specific error guidance.
