If data is missing after you restore an iPhone or iPad, first leave the device connected to Wi-Fi and power and check whether the restore or iCloud sync is still running. Then identify where the missing information was stored: in the device backup, in iCloud sync, with a mail or app provider, or in a computer backup. The right recovery step depends on that source.
1. Check whether the restore or sync is still in progress
Some apps and content continue downloading after you finish device setup. Apple says an iCloud restore can take hours or days depending on the backup size and network speed. Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi and power, and check the iCloud Backup area in Settings for a restore-in-progress indication before treating missing content as lost.
Apple’s restore troubleshooting guidance says, “You can’t restore from a backup over a cellular Internet connection.” If progress stalls or an error appears, confirm that the backup exists, try a different Wi-Fi network, and consider another available backup. Restore duration varies, so a slow download by itself does not establish that data is unrecoverable. Apple Support: If restore from iCloud backup failed
2. Find out where the missing data was stored
An iCloud device backup does not necessarily contain every category of information. Some data syncs separately, some lives with another provider, and some may be included in a backup only under particular settings. Check the relevant account or service as well as the restored device.

| Photos and videos | If iCloud Photos was enabled, the library syncs to iCloud rather than being included in the nightly iCloud device backup. Keep the device on Wi-Fi while it downloads. If iCloud Photos was off, Camera Roll content may have been included in the backup. |
| iCloud Drive files | Files stored in iCloud Drive sync separately and are not included in iCloud Backup. Sign in to iCloud.com and check iCloud Drive and the relevant folders. |

3. Check for another backup before restoring again
If the missing information should have been in a backup but is still absent after syncing finishes, check whether another iCloud or computer backup is available. Compare its date and size with the backup already used; an older backup may not include recent changes.

Restoring a different backup can replace the device’s current contents. Apple advises: “Always back up your current data on your computer before you try to restore from iCloud Backup.” Make a computer backup of the current device state before attempting another iCloud restore. 4. Restore from a computer backup
If a relevant computer backup exists, connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer and use the backup-management app available for that system: Finder on supported Macs, Apple Devices on Windows, or iTunes on older supported systems. A USB data connection is required; check the ports on both the device and computer when choosing a cable.

- Connect the device to the computer and open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, as applicable.
- Select the device, choose the option to restore from a backup, and select the backup you want to use.
- If the backup is encrypted, enter its encryption password when prompted.
- Keep the device connected until the restore finishes, then allow apps and synced content to download.

5. Try iCloud.com recovery and Recently Deleted
Use the recovery option for the relevant iCloud category
Sign in to iCloud.com and look for the recovery option that matches the missing data. Apple lists recovery options for calendars, contacts, iCloud Drive and iWork, Photos, Mail, Notes, Reminders, and Safari bookmarks. Available features can differ by device or account. Recover deleted iCloud Drive files
Apple says supported files deleted from iCloud Drive and other apps can be recovered at iCloud.com within 30 days. Files permanently removed cannot be recovered through this feature. Avoid changing iCloud Drive data while recovery is underway. See Recover deleted files on iCloud.com.
Recover deleted Messages
On iOS 16 or later and iPadOS 16.1 or later, the Messages app’s Recently Deleted feature can recover conversations deleted within the previous 30 to 40 days. Messages deleted before updating to those operating-system versions cannot be restored with this feature. Follow Apple’s current steps at Recover deleted text messages on your iPhone or iPad.

When recovery may not be possible
If there is no relevant backup, synced copy, provider-held copy, or item in a category’s recovery area, Apple’s guidance does not promise that the missing information can be recovered. A cable or storage accessory only provides a connection or storage; it cannot recreate a backup that was never made. The Apple guidance cited here also does not establish third-party recovery software as a reliable way to recover data absent from backups or cloud sync.
