If Kotlin println() output is missing from Android Logcat, use Android’s logging API for messages you need to find there: for example, Log.d("MainActivity", "Loaded"). Unlike standard output, an Android Log call creates an entry with a priority and tag. Android’s documentation describes the platform logging API, but does not promise that plain println() output will appear uniformly across devices, Android versions, and IDE configurations.
Why println() may not appear in Logcat
Kotlin’s println() writes to standard output, a process stream. Android logging uses a different path: calls to android.util.Log send structured entries through Android’s logging system. Those entries have a priority, tag, and message, and are handled by the system’s logd service. Android identifies the main buffer as the buffer for most application logs. See Android’s Logcat command-line documentation.
Because standard output and Android log entries are not the same thing, do not rely on println() as a consistent way to produce searchable, tagged Logcat messages. The documented app-logging API is android.util.Log. Whether standard output happens to be visible can depend on the device and development setup; the official documentation does not establish a universal capture rule.
Send the message through Android’s logging API
For a message intended for Logcat, import android.util.Log and call a severity-specific method:

Log.d("MainActivity", "Loaded")Choose a priority that reflects the message: Log.d for debug detail, Log.i for informational messages, Log.w for warnings, and Log.e for errors. Use a tag that helps identify the relevant class or component. Android documents these methods in the Log API reference.
If you need to dispatch using an explicit priority rather than a severity-specific method, the API also provides Log.println(priority, tag, message). This is Android’s logging method; it is distinct from Kotlin’s standard-output println().

Find the entry in Android Studio Logcat
- Open View > Tool Windows > Logcat.
- Select the device or emulator running your app.
- Run the app and trigger the code that logs the message.
- Make sure Logcat is showing current output: it should not be paused or positioned away from the newest entries.
- Clear or broaden the query if the expected entry is not visible.
Android Studio Logcat displays app and system messages in real time, but its query can narrow what is shown. Check for package, process, tag, message, severity, or age terms that exclude the entry. In particular, the age: query is compared with the host computer’s timestamp, so an incorrect computer clock can make an age filter misleading. The query syntax and filtering controls are described in Android Studio’s Logcat guide.
Check command-line filters and buffers separately
If you are using adb logcat rather than the Android Studio window, check the command’s filter expression and selected buffer. Android’s command-line tool documents buffers such as main, system, and crash, as well as filter expressions including MyApp:D and *:S. For example, *:S silences all tags unless another rule enables them, so a restrictive expression can hide entries that were written.

Do not treat command-line filters and Android Studio queries as interchangeable: the command-line filter syntax differs from the Studio query language. Consult the Logcat command-line guide for buffer and filter behavior, and the Android Studio guide for window queries.
Account for priority thresholds
Android documents INFO as the default minimum priority for application logging when relevant system properties are not set. System properties can change the minimum severity. If a real Log.d entry is absent while higher-priority entries appear, inspect the active priority configuration as well as your filters. This threshold concerns Android logging calls; it does not explain whether standard-output text from println() is redirected.

Log exceptions and clean up development output
For exception diagnostics, pass the throwable to an appropriate Log method so the exception information is recorded with the message. Android’s debugging guide includes Kotlin logging guidance and advises removing development log messages and stack-trace print calls before publishing an app.
