If an iPhone or iPad won’t update or restore, start by checking the computer, USB connection, and cable. When prompted, choose Update before Restore: Apple says Update reinstalls the software while keeping personal data, but Restore erases it. Use recovery mode only when the device’s symptoms call for it, and try the less destructive option first.
Check the computer and USB connection first
A failed update or restore can result from a computer or connection problem, so rule those out before changing the device’s software. Apple’s general troubleshooting guide recommends these checks:
- Update the computer. Install available macOS updates on a Mac. On a Windows PC, make sure the Apple Devices app or iTunes is current.
- Connect directly. Plug the iPhone or iPad into a USB port on the computer, not a keyboard or USB hub.
- Unlock and trust. Unlock the device and tap Trust if it asks whether to trust the computer.
- Try a different port or cable. Use a known-good cable; Apple advises trying another Apple USB cable if an alert persists. Check that its connector is compatible with your device.
- Restart both devices. Restart the iPhone or iPad and the computer, then try again.
- Check security software. Security software can interfere with the connection. If possible, try another computer on a different network.
Choose Update before Restore when offered
If Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices or iTunes on a PC offers Update and Restore, choose Update first when appropriate. Apple says Update reinstalls the software while keeping personal data. If it fails or the device remains in recovery mode, consult Apple’s recovery instructions before deciding whether to restore.

When to use recovery mode
Apple lists several signs that recovery mode may be needed: a “Connect to computer” screen, a computer that does not recognize the device or says it is in recovery mode, an Apple logo that remains for a long time without a progress bar, or repeated unsuccessful Recovery Assistant starts. Update the computer first, connect the device by USB, open Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on a PC, and keep the device connected as you enter recovery mode.

iPhone button sequences
Apple’s cited recovery guide gives these sequences for iPhone. In each case, keep holding until the “Connect to computer” screen appears:
- iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later): Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button.
- iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Top or Side button and Volume Down together.
- iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): Press and hold the Home button and the Top or Side button together.
For an iPad, use Apple’s model-specific recovery instructions; do not apply the iPhone button sequences to it.

If recovery mode offers Update or Restore
Choose Update first if you want to attempt a data-preserving reinstall. If the update does not resolve the problem and you proceed with Restore, understand that it erases all data. After the restore, set up the device and use an available backup if you have one.
If the software download takes more than 15 minutes, Apple says the device may leave the “Connect to computer” screen. Let the download finish, then repeat the steps to connect and select an option in recovery mode.

What to do about errors 9, 4005, 4013, and 4014
Apple says these errors may appear if the device disconnects during an update or the computer loses its connection during a restore. Follow Apple’s steps for errors 9, 4005, 4013, and 4014 in this order:
- Update the computer, then force restart the device using the sequence for its model.
- Reconnect it and choose Update first if that option appears.
- If the error continues, check for further computer updates, try another USB cable and port, and then try another computer.
- If the error persists, contact Apple Support.
Look up other error codes by their exact message
Different errors can point to different problems, so do not assume that another code has the same cause or remedy as errors 9, 4005, 4013, and 4014. Apple’s iOS and iPadOS update and restore error index includes code-specific guidance. For example, Apple advises waiting for a download to finish for error 1671 and unlocking the device for error 4037. Error 10 can involve software compatibility; errors 1015 or “required resource can’t be found” may involve unauthorized software modifications or an attempted downgrade. Check the exact message against Apple’s entry rather than applying a fix based on a different code.

Apple says service may be necessary if recovery mode cannot update or restore the device, or if a broken or stuck button prevents you from entering recovery mode. Contact Apple Support for next steps.
