Verify a token by checking three separate records: define which launch milestone you mean, match the full contract address on the correct blockchain against a project-controlled source, and confirm every claimed exchange market on that exchange’s own notice or market page. A name or ticker alone is not enough: contract deployment, token distribution, transferability, liquidity, and exchange trading can happen at different times.
What does “launch date” mean?
A token may have several meaningful dates. Before repeating a launch date, identify the event it describes.
- Contract deployment: when the token contract was created on-chain.
- Announcement: when the project publicly identified the token or announced a launch.
- Distribution and transferability: when people received tokens and could transfer them.
- Liquidity: when the token first had a market with liquidity.
- Exchange trading: when trading began on a particular venue and pair.
These events need not occur on the same day. An explorer’s first visible transfer or decentralized-exchange trade is evidence of on-chain activity at that time; by itself, it does not prove the project’s intended launch date. Etherscan’s token-page guide describes Transfers and DEX Trades as chronological records that can help establish when activity appeared.
For one documented, deliberately strict example, a Kalshi event-contract rule filed with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission defines a “token launch” using multiple conditions, including deployment, official identification, transferability, economic value, liquidity, and distribution. That is the definition for that specific event contract, not a universal legal or industry standard. The filing signed August 26, 2025 excludes an announcement alone, nontransferable points, a fully locked token, or an inactive deployed contract from satisfying its definition.

How to verify a token’s contract address
- Start with a project-controlled source. Use the project’s official website, documentation, or a verified project announcement to identify the blockchain and complete contract address. Treat unsolicited messages and search-result snippets as leads, not authority.
- Open the correct chain explorer independently. Find the address on that blockchain’s explorer and compare it character-for-character with the address from the project source. Confirm the network as well as the address; the same ticker—or even a copied name and logo—does not establish identity.
- Inspect the explorer record and its provenance. On Ethereum, Etherscan’s token page shows the contract address in Token Details. Its Contract tab may expose verified source code and Read/Write functions, while Transfers and DEX Trades show chronological activity. Etherscan’s Information Center says a token page displays on-chain and off-chain data for users’ reference; some branding, links, and other information can be submitted or updated by the project, so not every displayed field is independently established by the explorer. - Check for a migration or rebrand. If an address differs from an older listing, look for a project-controlled migration notice and labels such as “Old Contract.” Etherscan supports public notes for events such as contract-address migrations, but use the project’s primary notice to determine which address it says is current, then verify that replacement on the relevant explorer.
Do not send funds, connect a wallet, or interact with a contract merely because its ticker matches the token you intended to find. A correct address match is an identity check, not proof that the asset is safe or that a transaction is appropriate.
How to verify an exchange listing and trading status
Check the exchange’s own announcement center or asset/market page for each claimed venue. Record the asset name, ticker, exact pair, blockchain or network, contract address if supplied, regional scope, time and timezone, and the status of deposits, trading, and withdrawals. “Will list,” “deposits open,” and “trading live” are different states.

For example, OKX Europe’s February 11, 2026 notice for SPACE specified an ETH-chain contract address, an 08:00 UTC listing time on February 12, 2026, and EEA scope. That supports a claim about the notice’s stated venue, region, address, and schedule—not a claim that the service is available everywhere or that its status cannot later change. A Hotcoin notice dated July 1, 2026 for TPTC (Trendy Play Tribe) separately stated deposit, withdrawal, and trading-start times for TPTC/USDT, and identified a BNB Smart Chain BEP-20 address with an explorer link. Its separate schedules illustrate why a listing claim should report each status rather than compress them into “listed.” See Hotcoin’s announcement center for the notice. How to use token directories without overreading them
Market-data directories can help you discover reported venues and markets, but confirm an exchange claim against that venue’s own announcement or market page. A directory entry alone does not establish that deposits or withdrawals work now, that the venue serves your jurisdiction, or that the market has usable liquidity.
CoinGecko Research’s CEX & DEX Trading Activity Report 2026 reported 1,281 token listings on MEXC and 1,273 on Gate for January 2025–January 2026, alongside 24.04 million tokens recorded on GeckoTerminal over the same interval. These are the report’s counts for that period—not current totals, a measure of market quality, or evidence that every token counted is legitimate or liquid. The 2026 report also illustrates why one large centralized exchange cannot be treated as an exhaustive list of everywhere a token may be tradable.

What verification establishes—and what it does not
This process helps establish which address a project identifies, what on-chain activity is visible, and what a particular exchange has announced or displays. It does not prove that a token is legitimate, safe, compliant in your jurisdiction, or likely to rise in value. Project announcements can contain project-supplied claims, explorer metadata may be creator-submitted, and exchange notices are dated and may be regional or subject to change.

- Prefer a project-controlled source for the claimed address, then verify the network and full address on its explorer.
- Use the exchange itself to substantiate a venue-specific listing, pair, region, schedule, and current status.
- Keep deployment, distribution, transferability, liquidity, and exchange trading as distinct dates unless the evidence shows they coincide.
