Discord’s Game Overlay can be associated with lag or crashes in some games, but Discord does not publish a typical FPS penalty or controlled measurements. If you notice a problem, Discord recommends turning the overlay off for that specific game and comparing how it behaves.
Can Discord Overlay lower FPS?
It can be associated with performance problems, but the effect is not established as a consistent FPS loss. Discord’s Game Overlay 101 guide advises disabling the feature for an affected game if it causes lag, crashes, or other issues. The guide does not give an average frame-rate cost, and the official sources cited here do not provide controlled FPS measurements.
Discord documents that overlay use adds an overlay host process, an overlay GPU process, and an overlay renderer per game. That confirms additional process activity, not how many frames per second a particular PC will lose, if any. See Why does Discord have multiple processes?
How to check whether the overlay is affecting your game
- In Discord, open User Settings and choose Game Overlay. Turn off the overlay for the game you are troubleshooting, rather than changing unrelated settings.
- Run the same game scene with the same graphics settings and display mode. Compare frame rate and whether the lag, stutter, or crash recurs. This is a practical check on your own system, not a guaranteed fix or a controlled benchmark.
- If disabling the overlay resolves the issue, leave it disabled for that game. If the problem persists, the comparison does not establish that Discord was the cause; investigate other possible causes separately.
Discord lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported for Game Overlay; its current guide says the feature does not function on macOS or Linux. The guidance is in Discord’s Game Overlay 101 guide.

How to turn off Discord Overlay for one game
Use Discord’s per-game overlay controls in User Settings > Game Overlay. Find the affected game in the game list and switch its overlay off. This targets that game rather than disabling the feature everywhere. If the game is not listed, check the overlay settings and Discord’s detected-game list; the support guide covers enabling and managing the feature.
Why Discord Overlay may not appear in fullscreen
Display mode can determine whether the overlay appears. Discord’s current troubleshooting guidance recommends switching the game to Windowed or Borderless Windowed if the overlay is not working. Its July 30, 2024 known-issue notice said the revamped overlay worked in windowed and windowed-borderless fullscreen, but not true fullscreen.

That notice also described a legacy overlay setting as an option for users who needed true fullscreen, while warning it might be removed. It recorded a rollout to Canary and PTB users and no ETA for a full Stable rollout at that time. Those rollout details are historical; the notice does not establish which client versions offer the legacy option today. For a current workaround, try borderless windowed mode first.
What to do if the game crashes with Overlay enabled
Discord’s Game Overlay support guidance asks users experiencing a crash to collect the overlay hook log and submit it to Support with a description of the issue and the game’s name.

discord_hookhookfolder. - Contact Discord Support and include the log, the game name, and a clear description of when the crash occurs.
Is Hardware Acceleration a proven Overlay FPS fix?
No. Discord’s Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide discusses hardware acceleration in the context of video issues, and its screen-sharing guidance addresses screen-share problems. Those instructions do not establish that changing Hardware Acceleration fixes Game Overlay performance. For overlay-related lag or crashes, start with Discord’s game-specific recommendation to disable the overlay.
