Open the Game Boy Color and inspect the board

Before fitting the screen, inspect the motherboard and cartridge-slot area. Retro Gaming Parts UK advises trimming sharp cartridge-slot pin ends and insulating them with Kapton or electrical tape to help prevent shorts. Treat this as a precaution to verify against your own board and the instructions for your kit: do not cut pins unless the exact installation requires it. Apply insulation only where it will not obstruct the fit or interfere with contacts.
Connect and test the display before fixing it in place
- Keep the protective sheet and adhesive uncommitted. Do not remove the screen’s protective sheet or secure its adhesive yet. Retro Modding advises testing the display before either step.
- Handle the ribbon gently. The retailer describes the ribbon as fragile. Align it with its connector and follow the supplied instructions; do not pull, crease or force it.
- Connect the power wire using the instructions for your revision. The product listing says one wire must be soldered, but the reviewed listing text does not establish a reliable pad location. Solder only to the point identified in the instructions included with your exact kit. Do not infer the connection from an IPS installation guide or another LCD mod.
- Power on for a functional check. Follow the kit instructions for safely reconnecting and testing the console. Confirm that the screen operates before securing adhesive or removing its protective sheet. If it does not, power down and recheck the ribbon seating and the revision-specific wiring instructions rather than pressing the display into the shell.
Seat the laminated panel and close the shell without pressure
Once the screen has passed the initial test, position it in the compatible shell and check that the bonded lens sits evenly and that the display and ribbon have clearance. Follow the kit’s instructions for any included fixing strip or adhesive. Recheck alignment before committing adhesive, because repositioning a bonded display may be difficult.

Bring the shell halves together gently. If they do not close freely, stop and inspect alignment, ribbon routing, board clearance and shell compatibility. Do not squeeze or screw the housing shut against resistance; the seller warns that pressure on the display can permanently damage it. If your housing needs alteration, confirm the required changes for that exact shell and kit revision before removing material.
