A token appearing in your wallet—or a familiar name, logo, or social account—does not establish that it is genuine or safe. If you cannot explain what a prompt authorizes, reject it and stop.
Start with the route, not the token link
Find the project’s website or app through a source you verify separately. Do not use claim links from unsolicited email, direct messages, social replies, token memos, or advertisements. The FBI has warned that unsolicited airdrop memos can contain third-party URLs; fake redemption and swap routes can also ask users to approve transactions or disclose recovery phrases. A verified social account is not conclusive: Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA) has noted that scammers have used compromised verified X accounts.
- Check that the campaign is announced in the project’s own official materials or by the provider responsible for it.
- If the offer was unexpected, contact the provider using contact details you locate independently—not contact information on the claim page.
- Never enter or share your recovery phrase, private key, account password, or one-time passcode to claim a token. Stop if a page requests any of them. Coinbase says a legitimate airdrop campaign will not ask for a 12-word recovery phrase; the FBI also warns about fraudulent sites seeking seed phrases and credentials.
A token sent to your wallet is not proof of who issued it, and a URL embedded in a token memo, name, or transaction history is not a trustworthy route.
Match the network and exact contract address
Confirm the blockchain network and token contract address using the project’s independently verified official information, then check the address on an appropriate block explorer. Search for the address itself; do not identify a token by its symbol, name, or logo alone. Different assets can use similar names, and a matching symbol does not establish a matching contract.

Coinbase recommends verifying the contract address, and MetaMask likewise cautions against trusting fake redemption or swap routes. If the project’s official materials and the explorer do not agree, or you cannot establish which network and address are correct, do not connect or sign.
Understand every wallet prompt before signing
Read the wallet’s transaction or message prompt rather than approving it based on the page’s explanation. Identify the account, contract, token, spender, amount or allowance, and action. If any part is missing, unfamiliar, or unrelated to the claim or swap you intended, reject the request and verify it through the project’s independently located documentation.

Approvals and permits can authorize later spending
An approval or permit may give a contract authority to move tokens later, rather than transferring them immediately. A signature is therefore not harmless simply because the prompt shows no immediate token transfer. Singapore’s CSA advisory describes malicious approve/permit allowances, and Singapore Police warn that a permit signature can pre-authorize a future transaction—even when signed with a hardware wallet.
Understand why a permission is needed and whether its allowance is limited. If you cannot establish that, do not sign. A hardware wallet can help protect keys, but it cannot make an unsafe or misunderstood signature safe.

Assess the project and market as evidence, not proof
Look for coherent project documentation, identifiable team information, and an audit relevant to the token or contracts involved. Check for explorer warnings or flags and whether liquidity and trading information appear credible. These checks can reveal reasons for caution, but passing them does not prove that a token or claim route is legitimate. Coinbase specifically warns that honeypot tokens may appear profitable while being unsellable.
Do not make a large trade because of hype or a displayed wallet balance. Coinbase suggests a small test transaction as one possible way to check sellability, but such a test is not a safety guarantee and can still expose your wallet to risk. Consider it only after verifying the route, address, and requested permissions; skip it if anything remains unexplained.

Compare plausible claim or swap routes
If you find more than one plausible route, compare them on the same checks. This is a screening aid, not a scoring system: no combination of favorable answers proves safety.

What to do with an unsolicited token or a suspicious interaction
If you have not interacted with it
Leave an unexplained token untouched. Do not follow an embedded URL or try to redeem it. Coinbase advises that unexpected dust can be left alone; a wallet interface may also offer options to hide or report it. Avoid interacting with the token merely to see what it does.

If you signed an approval you do not trust
Use a trusted wallet interface or a well-known, relevant explorer tool to review active approvals, then revoke suspicious permissions. Independently verify the revocation tool’s address before connecting your wallet. Ethereum.org lists approval-review resources and recommends revoking malicious approvals.
If your recovery phrase or private key may have been exposed
Treat the wallet as compromised. Using a clean, trusted process, generate a new wallet securely and move remaining assets to it. Change passwords for linked accounts, enable two-factor authentication, contact the relevant exchange or provider through official channels, and report the incident with transaction hashes and wallet addresses. Ethereum.org notes that confirmed Ethereum transactions are final; be wary of anyone demanding a fee to recover funds, since recovery offers are often another scam.
When to stop
- The only route you have is an unsolicited link, token memo, or social message.
- The campaign cannot be confirmed through independently located official materials.
- The network or exact contract address does not match, or cannot be verified.
- A page asks for a recovery phrase, private key, password, or one-time code.
- You cannot explain the wallet’s requested approval, permit, or signature.
- The project, explorer, or market information raises questions you cannot resolve.
Token eligibility, live contract addresses, liquidity, audits, app support, and scam indicators vary by token and network and can change. Recheck them through official project information and relevant trusted tools immediately before acting. This general checklist does not establish whether a particular token is safe, eligible, legal, or likely to increase in value.
