You can convert VHS tapes at home using free recording software such as OBS Studio, but you still need a working VCR, compatible video-capture hardware, cables, a computer, and enough storage. Connect the VCR to the capture device, connect that device to the computer, check that picture and sound work, then record while the tape plays.

What you need to digitize a VHS tape

  • A working VCR: The computer cannot read a cassette directly; the VCR plays the tape and sends out its audio and video.
  • A compatible capture device: It converts the VCR’s analog output into a signal the computer can record. Match its inputs to the VCR’s outputs and check support for your tape’s video standard (NTSC, PAL, or SECAM), computer operating system, and drivers.
  • Suitable cables: Composite RCA is common: yellow carries video, while red and white carry audio. If both the VCR and capture device support S-Video, you can use it for video and connect audio separately.
  • A computer and recording software: OBS Studio is free and can record from a supported capture device. On Windows, the device driver needs to provide DirectShow output for OBS to use it as a video source. OBS Studio’s capture-source documentation explains the supported-source requirement.
  • Storage space: Capture happens in real time, and file size depends on the selected format and settings. A Canadian Conservation Institute bulletin gives one hour of DV video as a 13 GB example; that is specific to DV, not a universal estimate. The bulletin’s format and workflow guidance discusses trade-offs between file size, editing needs, and future use.

“Free” describes the software workflow, not necessarily the full setup. If you need to acquire a VCR, capture device, cables, or storage, include those in the cost.

Check the tape and equipment before connecting

Inspect the cassette and playback condition

Follow the Canadian Conservation Institute’s guidance on evaluating analog video before playing a tape. Do not run a cassette that appears damaged or contaminated through a VCR without appropriate advice: playback may put the tape or player at risk.

Confirm standards and compatibility

Check the recording standard where possible and verify that the VCR and capture device support it. Capture devices may be designed for NTSC, PAL, or SECAM, and some support switching between standards. Also confirm that your computer has a compatible driver and that the device exposes a video source OBS can use. A connector fitting physically does not by itself establish signal or driver compatibility.

Connect the VCR to the computer

  1. Find the VCR’s output jacks. Use the VCR’s video and audio outputs, not its inputs. For composite RCA, connect yellow to video and red/white to the matching audio inputs on the capture device.
  2. Choose video connection. Composite is the common option. If both devices have S-Video, it can carry the video signal instead; connect audio separately using the appropriate audio outputs and inputs.
  3. Connect the capture device to the computer. Follow the device maker’s connection and driver instructions. For a Windows setup, OBS requires a driver that provides DirectShow output.
  4. Check that the computer recognizes the device. Open OBS and confirm the capture device is available as a source before proceeding.

Diamond Multimedia’s VC500/VC500SE guide illustrates a composite connection and OBS workflow for its own hardware. Its device-specific instructions should not be assumed to apply to every capture device.

Set up OBS and make a short test recording

  1. Add the video source: In OBS, add a Video Capture Device source to the scene and select your capture device. This is the general OBS workflow for a supported device.
  2. Set up audio: Configure audio from the capture device or its separate audio input, depending on the device and operating system. Select the correct input if OBS does not capture sound automatically.
  3. Check the live picture and sound: Play a short section of tape and verify that the preview shows video and that audio is audible and clean enough to record.
  4. Choose a save location and format: Select a drive with sufficient free space. MP4 is one example used in Diamond’s guide, not a universal preservation standard. Choose the format and quality according to whether you need a convenient viewing copy, room to edit, or a larger preservation-oriented master.
  5. Record a short sample: Stop the test, open the resulting file, and check picture, sound, synchronization, and whether the recording plays through. Adjust the setup before capturing a full tape if anything is wrong.

Resolution and frame rate depend on the setup

Do not assume one resolution or frame rate is best for every VHS capture. Diamond’s September 29, 2026 guide recommends 720×480 at 30 FPS for its VC500/VC500SE setup; PCWorld’s 2025 guide describes 640×480 for its own HDMI-capture approach. These are examples tied to particular workflows, not universal settings. Select options supported by your capture device and appropriate to the tape standard.

Capture the tape and check the finished file

  1. Set OBS to record to the chosen destination.
  2. Start recording, then play the tape on the VCR. The transfer takes as long as the section being played.
  3. Stop the recording when playback ends, then review the whole file or enough of it to confirm it is complete and that picture, sound, and synchronization remain acceptable.
  4. Keep the original tape where practical. For important digital files, make a second copy on separate storage so a single storage failure does not leave you with no digital copy.

Troubleshoot common capture problems

Black picture

  • Check that the VCR is playing and that its video output is connected to the capture device’s video input.
  • Confirm the correct device is selected as the OBS Video Capture Device source.
  • On systems with camera permissions, check that the recording application is allowed to access the device. Diamond’s guide also recommends connecting its device directly to a computer USB port rather than an unpowered hub.

No audio

  • Verify that the audio cables are connected to the VCR’s output jacks and the capture device’s audio inputs.
  • Select the correct capture-device or separate audio input in the recording setup.
  • Check microphone or audio permissions if the operating system blocks access.

Audio is out of sync

First confirm the issue in the recorded sample. Diamond’s guide describes adjusting an OBS audio sync offset for its setup; the right adjustment depends on the equipment. Test the change with another short recording before capturing a full tape.

Motion looks jagged or has comb-like lines

VHS footage is interlaced, so motion may show comb-like lines when viewed with settings that do not handle interlacing appropriately. Diamond’s guide shows OBS deinterlacing controls for its device workflow. Check the capture software’s available deinterlacing options and review a sample; do not assume a device-specific setting is suitable for every source.

Choose between a free-software setup, a transfer device, and a service

Option What it involves Best fit What to check
VCR, capture device, and free software Connect the VCR to compatible capture hardware and record with software such as OBS. Hardware and storage may still cost money. You have a working VCR and want control over the capture process. Tape standard, input and output connectors, audio path, operating-system and driver support, storage, and time for real-time playback.
Purpose-built transfer device Use a dedicated product or kit intended to transfer tapes. Specific current costs and terms are not established here. You prefer a more guided or self-contained workflow. Supported tape standards, VCR connections, output format, included cables or software, and compatibility with your computer.
Professional digitizing service Send or bring tapes to a provider for transfer; fees and terms depend on the provider. You lack a working setup, have many tapes, or have media that may need specialist handling. Pricing, handling and shipping, privacy policy, file format, media return, and how damaged tapes are assessed.

PCWorld’s 2025 consumer guide describes a composite-to-HDMI adapter with a USB capture card and OBS as one approach, and also discusses dedicated transfer products and professional bulk transfer. Those are alternatives, not guarantees of compatibility or current-price recommendations. Diamond says its VC500/VC500SE workflow uses OBS; that is the manufacturer’s statement about its own supported setup, not independent comparative testing.
