How a launch becomes a warning
Public descriptions explain the main stages, but do not disclose operational trigger thresholds, detailed message formats, or the time taken for an alert to reach a command center.

Infrared sensors observe a launch plume
A missile or booster plume produces heat that infrared sensors can detect against Earth’s background. The U.S. Space Force Combat Forces Command describes this principle for the legacy Defense Support Program (DSP). SBIRS uses shortwave and midwave infrared sensing.

Satellites scan broadly or revisit areas of interest
SBIRS combines a scanning sensor, which continuously scans Earth for global strategic warning, with a more agile step-staring sensor that revisits theater areas and intelligence areas of interest. The U.S. Space Force describes the scanning function as a 24/7 global strategic-warning capability.

Onboard and ground systems process sensor information
SBIRS performs some signal processing aboard the satellite and sends detected events to the ground. It also downlinks raw, unprocessed infrared data for ground processors. Public descriptions do not provide the detection algorithms or the thresholds used to identify an event.

Space Force crews monitor and distribute warnings
Ground crews monitor satellite information and transmit warnings to strategic and theater command centers. The 2d Space Warning Squadron says it reports missile launches, space launches, nuclear detonations, and other operationally valuable infrared information to national leaders, the Secretary of Defense, combatant commanders, intelligence agencies, and warfighters. Mission Delta 4 also describes warning, missile-defense tipping and cueing, and other mission support.

What DSP and SBIRS contribute
DSP and SBIRS are not interchangeable labels for one satellite. DSP is a legacy infrared warning system, while the publicly described SBIRS architecture combines several kinds of space-based sensors with ground systems.

How the ground system is changing
Ground processing and communications are part of the warning architecture, and public program updates distinguish capabilities already in use from planned modernization.
- FORGE: The Space Force has described Future Operationally Resilient Ground Evolution as a ground mission-data processing framework already processing legacy SBIRS data, with support for next-generation systems planned.
- Relay Ground Stations: In 2025, Space Systems Command reported an award for stations intended to relay overhead persistent infrared (OPIR) information between legacy and future satellites and ground systems. The award describes an intended capability, not proof that those stations are already deployed.
What public sources do not reveal
Official public descriptions establish the broad detection-to-warning chain, not its classified operational details. They do not establish the precise infrared thresholds, event-message contents, command-routing procedures, or end-to-end alert time. Claims about a specific detection speed, probability, or accuracy would therefore go beyond the public information cited here.
