Before installing a Windows 11 Insider build, make a separate, verified copy of important personal files; confirm any Windows Backup or File History run has finished; save your BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled; and know how you will recover Windows if the preview causes trouble. Do not rely on a restore point, Recovery Drive, or the temporary Go back option as your only copy of important files.

Start with this pre-install checklist

  1. Copy irreplaceable files to an external drive, network location, or trusted cloud storage. Include files that exist only on this PC, not just items in folders you know are synced.
  2. Verify the copy. Open files from the backup location, or test a restore, rather than assuming that a completed copy or sync notification means everything is usable. Microsoft lists external drives, cloud storage, and other secure locations as backup destinations: Windows Backup and restore guidance.
  3. Check any backup tool you already use. Confirm Windows Backup has completed and is tied to the Microsoft account you expect, or make sure File History has run to its configured destination.
  4. Save the BitLocker recovery key somewhere accessible from another device or location if your PC is encrypted.
  5. Plan for recovery and rollback. Understand what the available options restore, what they remove, and how long the previous-build option is available.

Insider builds are not equivalent to production releases: Microsoft says they are less stable, are not serviced, and eventually expire. The exact recovery path can vary with Windows edition and build, device management, encryption, and whether rollback files remain available. See Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program guidance.

Which files should you back up?

Prioritize anything difficult or impossible to recreate. The folders below are a practical checklist, not a claim that Windows automatically includes them in a backup:

  • Documents, photos, videos, and other personal files.
  • Project and work folders, including data stored outside standard user folders.
  • Locally stored archives and downloads that have no other copy.
  • Files outside known cloud-sync folders, or files whose sync status you have not verified.

Keep at least one copy separate from the PC you are upgrading. That way, it remains available if Windows will not start or a recovery action removes files. Microsoft describes external drives, cloud storage, and other secure locations as possible destinations in its backup guidance.

What Windows Backup and File History cover

These tools do different jobs, and neither should be treated as proof that every file on the PC has a second copy. Review the settings and destination actually in use.

Windows Backup

Windows Backup can save files and selected Windows settings, themes, many installed apps, and Wi-Fi information. Microsoft says backed-up files can be restored after signing in with the same Microsoft account used for the backup. Check the backup settings, account, and sync status before installation; do not assume all folders or app data are included. See Windows Backup: back up and restore.

File History

File History periodically saves changed personal files to a configured external drive or network destination, allowing earlier versions to be restored. If you rely on it, check that the destination is connected or reachable and that a recent run completed. Details are in Microsoft’s File History guidance.

Know what each recovery option can and cannot do

Option What it helps with Important limitation
Separate file backup Preserves personal files in a separate location for later access or restoration. You must confirm the copy contains the files you need and can be opened or restored.
Windows Backup Can save files and selected Windows settings, themes, many installed apps, and Wi-Fi information. Coverage depends on the settings and account used; it is not a guarantee that every file or app state is included.
File History Periodically saves changed personal files to an external or network destination, including earlier versions. It must be configured and have completed a recent run; it is not a full Windows recovery image.
Recovery Drive Provides recovery files for restoring Windows. It does not include personal files, so it cannot replace a file backup. Microsoft explains this in its Recovery Drive instructions.
System Restore Can revert system files, registry settings, installed programs, and settings to a restore point without affecting personal files. System Protection is not enabled by default; confirm it is on and that a restore point exists. A restore point is not an independent copy of personal data. See System Restore guidance.
Go back Returns Windows to the previous version or build when the option remains available. It is time-limited, usually 10 days, depends on retained rollback folders, and removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade while reversing settings changes.

Prepare a way back if the preview fails

Understand the Go back window

Microsoft says the Go back option is available for a limited time, usually 10 days. It keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes. It also depends on the windows.old and $windows.~bt folders remaining on the device. Going back to an earlier build does not remove the device from the Insider Program, so a later preview may still arrive. Check Microsoft’s current Windows recovery options before relying on this route.

Check System Protection and restore points

System Restore may help undo system changes, but it is not a substitute for backing up personal files. Check that System Protection is enabled and that a restore point exists before installation. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions describe the feature and its use.

Keep recovery media and the recovery key accessible

A Recovery Drive contains Windows recovery files but not personal files. If Windows cannot start, recovery media—or media supplied by your PC manufacturer—may be needed. Some reinstall choices remove personal files and settings, so keep your separate backup available. Microsoft documents the distinction in its Recovery Drive instructions and recovery options overview.
