The right protection depends on where and how the magnet will be used: Ni-Cu-Ni is a common choice for dry indoor use, while humid, outdoor, wet, or chemical exposure may call for a different coating selected with the supplier. A coating is a barrier, not a guarantee—damage, edges, and fit tolerances matter.
Why do rare earth magnets corrode?
“Rare earth magnet” often refers to a neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnet. Sintered NdFeB is particularly sensitive to corrosion: moisture and salts can attack the alloy, and the iron-bearing material can oxidize. Alloy additions alone may not provide adequate protection, according to Yunsheng USA’s coating guidance. Dura Magnetics likewise describes NdFeB as highly reactive to moisture and salty environments.
Corrosion products consume magnet material and can make a part expand as rust forms. That expansion may interfere with neighboring components in an assembly. A visible rust spot does not, by itself, establish a particular loss of magnetic force: the rate and effect depend on the part and its exposure.
Coatings separate the magnet from its surroundings, but their effectiveness depends on the coating, its condition, and the operating environment. A damaged area or exposed edge can undermine the barrier.

- Assorted Multi‑Size Magnet Set for DIY & Craft Projects: This kit comes with a nice variety of magnet sizes to meet your different hobby‑project needs. Multiple sizes in one pack, convenient for crafts, handmade ornaments, 3D‑print accessories and small DIY modifications. Ideal choice if you need assorted small‑size magnets for light‑duty work
- Comes with Handy Storage Organizer Case: All magnets are stored in a reusable plastic case for easy classification and storage. Keep different‑size magnets organized, reduce unintended violent snapping‑together between magnets, help prevent chipping and loss during storage
- Good Performance for Light‑Weight Applications: Magnets attract strongly to each other. Suitable for holding paper, photos and lightweight decorations on ordinary steel metal surfaces. Note: magnet‑to‑metal holding power is weaker than magnet‑to‑magnet attraction. NOT for heavy‑duty hanging jobs
- Economical Value Pack for Hobby Users: Cost‑effective assorted magnet pack with sufficient quantity. Perfect for casual crafters, makers, science‑experiment use and household light‑duty use. Please note these are small‑dimension magnets; refer to product images and size chart for exact dimensions before purchasing
- Important Usage Reminder: Neodymium magnets are brittle. Do NOT allow magnets of different sizes to snap violently together, as impact may cause chipping or cracking. Keep away from pacemakers and electronic screens. Not suitable for small children without adult supervision. Not recommended for stainless‑steel / glass refrigerator doors. The magnetic flux of our product is below 50 kG²/mm²
Which coating should you choose?
There is no universally best coating. Use the following as a starting point, then have the magnet supplier confirm suitability for the actual exposure and part.
| Coating or treatment | Potential fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ni-Cu-Ni (nickel-copper-nickel) | A common, good-value starting choice for general dry indoor use, according to AHL Co., Ltd. | AHL says it is not suited to prolonged humidity; do not treat it as a universal outdoor barrier. |
| Epoxy | A coating to investigate for humid or outdoor service when rust resistance matters. Ask about factory-coated epoxy-coated neodymium magnets for the specific application. | Edges can chip, and the coating is thicker than nickel; confirm the actual build and exposure suitability with the supplier. |
| Parylene | AHL identifies it for chemical or medical settings and describes it as thin and uniform. | That general use description does not establish a specific medical or food-contact approval. Obtain application-specific validation. |
| Zinc | AHL describes it as a lower-cost conductive option. | Its surface can oxidize and discolor; it is not presented as the strongest choice for harsh conditions. |
| Passivation | Short-term protection during storage and transport, as described by Yunsheng USA. | It is not a substitute for an application-specific coating in aggressive service environments. |
These are qualitative supplier recommendations, not results from a matched independent test of every coating in every environment. The cited guidance does not establish a universal service life for any option.

How should you protect a magnet in service?
- Identify the magnet and its existing finish. Confirm whether it is NdFeB and what coating, if any, it has. Do not assume an unmarked magnet is protected for wet or corrosive use.
- Describe the real exposure to the supplier. Specify whether the part encounters dry indoor air, sustained humidity, condensation, outdoor weather, salt, immersion, cleaning chemicals, or process fluids. Include operating temperature, geometry, impact or abrasion risk, electrical or soldering needs, and dimensional limits. Yunsheng says full protection against surrounding media requires an application-specific coating.
- Ask for a coating recommendation tied to that exposure. Ni-Cu-Ni may be a starting point for dry indoor use; investigate epoxy for humid or outdoor conditions, and ask whether parylene suits a chemical or medical application. These are not guarantees. The Vacuumschmelze VACODYM · VACOMAX catalog recommends coating when condensation occurs regularly or magnets are used in water or corrosive media.
- Protect the finish during handling. Avoid hard impacts and letting magnets snap together. AHL warns that impacts and edge collisions can chip nickel coating at corners. Inspect parts for coating damage before relying on the barrier.
- Account for coating thickness in the design. AHL reports nickel thickness of about 0.01–0.02 mm and says epoxy is thicker. These figures are supplier guidance, not a specification for every magnet. Confirm the actual coating build, finished dimensions, and fit tolerances with the supplier.
Can neodymium magnets be used outdoors?
They can be specified for outdoor service only with protection matched to the conditions; an ordinary nickel finish should not be assumed suitable for prolonged humidity. Rain, persistent dampness, condensation, salt, and exposure to chemicals can present different corrosion risks. Tell the supplier which of these apply and ask for a coating recommendation for the magnet’s geometry and operating conditions. Regular condensation or use in water or corrosive media is a reason to specify a coating, per the Vacuumschmelze catalog.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long does passivation protect a magnet in storage?
Yunsheng USA estimates that its passivated magnets can be stored for about 3–6 months at 22°C and relative humidity no higher than 60%; it reports about seven days for unprotected magnets. These are supplier- and condition-specific estimates, not universal guarantees or a promise of protection in service. For longer storage or harsher conditions, ask the magnet supplier what protection and storage limits apply to the specific product.

- 【Stronger Magnetic Force】Compared with individual NdFeB countersunk magnets, cup magnets have the advantage of being smaller in size and stronger in magnetic force, the magnetic force is 5 times stronger than normal rare earth magnets.Per strong magnet can up to 150 pound holding power.
- 【Nice Design】The round countersunk hole magnet cup design increases the beauty of the product, the steel shell concentrates the strong magnetic force on one side only, the other three sides are almost non-magnetic, well greatly increase the holding power.
- 【Sturable】Neodymium magnets are very brittle, and the steel shell protects magnets so that strong magnets are not easily broken. The magnetic force is permanent and the service life is super long.
- 【Wide Application】Due to its excellent performance, strong cup magnets are widely used in home or industry, such as clips in automation equipment, door closers, tool holders, fixtures, providing magnetic base mounting for lamps, clocks, machines, mirrors and so on. Heavy duty also comes with 6 stainless steel screws to increase the range of product usage.
- 【Precautions】As the neodymium magnet is very fragile and strong magnetic, when you use it you must remove it in a flat position, and after removing it, it is forbidden to collide it with other metal objects (including another magnet) to avoid injury! We are a magnet supplier with professional strength. You can certainly find strong cup magnets with holes you want in my shop!
