Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn Windows 10 and Windows 11, the safest way to reclaim space is to review the categories shown under Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations, then select only what you want removed. Do not assume everything in a folder named “Temp” is disposable: Downloads and other personal folders can hold files you still need, and deleting a previous Windows installation removes the option to roll back.
Which Windows cleanup options are safest?
Start with Windows’ built-in storage tools. They show cleanup categories for your PC and, in Storage settings, the amount of space Windows estimates can be reclaimed. Categories and available space vary by device, so read the descriptions on your screen rather than relying on a universal list.
Temporary files and Cleanup recommendations
Open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, or choose Cleanup recommendations in Storage settings. Review the listed categories, select only the ones you are comfortable removing, and confirm the cleanup. Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance explains these built-in options for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
A category’s appearance on this screen does not mean every PC will show the same items or recover the same amount of space. Use the descriptions and estimate shown on your own device.

Disk Cleanup
If Storage Sense or the Storage settings options are unavailable, use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool:
- Search Windows for Disk Cleanup and open it.
- Select the drive to clean, commonly the Windows drive, and choose OK.
- Review each category and its description before checking it, then select OK to proceed.
Microsoft’s documented Disk Cleanup interface lists Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Thumbnails as selected by default. Defaults can differ by Windows build; clear a selection if you do not want that category removed.

What should you inspect before deleting?
Downloads and other personal folders
Do not delete everything in Downloads just because you are freeing space. It commonly contains files saved by you, such as installers, documents, or media. Open the folder, decide which files you no longer need, and delete those individually. Move files you want to keep to another location or external storage instead. The same rule applies to personal folders: location alone does not make a file temporary.
Recycle Bin
Emptying the Recycle Bin permanently removes the items in it and recovers their space. Check its contents first; if a file may still be needed, restore it before emptying the bin.

Previous Windows installation (Windows.old)
Delete Previous Windows installation(s) only if you are sure you will not need to return to the prior Windows version. Removing it deletes the files required for that rollback. Microsoft says the previous version is automatically removed ten days after an upgrade; see its guidance on deleting your previous version of Windows.
Should you delete everything listed as temporary?
No. Review the category names and descriptions before selecting them, and leave anything whose purpose or consequences you do not understand. In particular, do not treat the contents of Downloads, personal folders, or active Windows and application folders as routine cleanup targets. Windows’ own cleanup screens are a better starting point than manually deleting files from system locations.

What if the Temp folder fills up again right away?
Microsoft documents a specific case in which the Temp folder quickly refills with Microsoft Store .appx files after running Cleanup recommendations. For that symptom, Microsoft recommends addressing Store and Windows Update components rather than repeatedly deleting Temp contents. The Settings path varies between Windows 10 and 11:
- Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter.
- Clear the Store cache by running
wsreset.exe. - Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Restart the PC.
These steps are for the documented Store-related refill issue, not a general instruction to delete arbitrary files from application or Windows folders. Microsoft’s free-up-drive-space guidance describes the scenario and version-specific paths.

Should you clear the Windows Update cache?
Not as routine storage cleanup. Microsoft documents deleting the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution as a troubleshooting step for Windows Update problems: stop the Windows Update service, remove the directory contents, then start the service again. Use it only when troubleshooting an update issue and follow Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance; it is not a general way to tidy a PC.
What if Windows says it needs more space for an update?
Update storage needs vary with the update path and optional content, so there is no single space requirement that applies to every PC. Review Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, or Disk Cleanup first. If Windows still asks for space, Microsoft says an external storage device can help complete some updates. It is also an optional place to move personal files you want to keep—not a required purchase for ordinary cleanup. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for Windows updates.
