Check three things separately: whether the iPhone supports MagSafe magnetic alignment, whether the accessory fits that exact model, and whether it delivers the charging speed or function you expect. An older MagSafe charger may still charge a new iPhone through Qi even if it does not magnetically attach or reach the phone’s maximum charging rate.
Start by identifying the iPhone and accessory
“MagSafe compatible” is not a single pass-or-fail test. A charger, case, mount, wallet, and battery pack can have different fit and support requirements. First find the exact iPhone model in Settings or on its box, then identify the accessory’s make and model. Check the accessory maker’s compatibility list for that specific combination; Apple’s general charging guidance does not confirm fit for every third-party accessory.
For an Apple MagSafe Charger, look for its part number on the charger or cable and compare it with Apple’s current MagSafe charging guidance. Check the power adapter too: the charger generation, iPhone model, and adapter rating all affect the stated maximum rate.
Understand magnetic attachment versus wireless charging
Magnetic alignment and Qi charging are different outcomes. Apple identifies iPhone 12 and later supported MagSafe models as compatible with magnetic alignment from its MagSafe Charger. Qi charging is available on iPhone 8 and later, including models Apple identifies as non-MagSafe, such as iPhone 16e and iPhone 11, X, XS, XR, and 8. So a charger may power a phone without snapping into place magnetically.

Apple says many Qi-certified chargers charge iPhone at rates up to 7.5 watts, though Qi performance varies by charger. Its MagSafe Charger listing says the charger is certified for Qi2 25W and Qi charging, and can wirelessly charge iPhone 8 or later; magnetic alignment applies to iPhone 12 and newer supported MagSafe models.
Check the charger’s model, adapter, and expected speed
Do not judge speed from the MagSafe name alone. Apple’s current charger instructions distinguish charger part numbers and adapter requirements. The figures below are Apple’s stated maxima under its specified conditions, not guaranteed real-world rates.

For example, Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications list MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W and Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W. That is a specification for iPhone 17—not a basis for assuming the same peak on every iPhone.
Make sure the case fits and allows charging
A case has to fit the exact phone and allow the accessory to work. Apple lists cases designed for iPhone 17, illustrating why a case made for an older iPhone should not be assumed to fit a newer one. With the case on, check that it seats correctly, the camera and controls have clearance, and the magnetic accessory attaches as intended.

If wireless charging is slow or fails, remove the case and retry. Apple advises testing without a thick, metal, or battery case. If charging works without the case, the case may be interfering even if its size appears close.
Test the charging setup in a controlled way
- Connect the charger to its recommended power adapter and place it on a stable surface.
- Center the iPhone on the charging surface. On a MagSafe-supported model, check that the charger aligns magnetically; on a Qi-only setup, position the phone over the charging area.
- Wait for the charging icon to appear. If charging is slow or absent, remove the case and test again.
- Move cards, security badges, passports, and key fobs away from the space between the phone and charger. Apple warns that magnetic strips or RFID chips may be damaged.
- If a third-party charger still does not behave as expected, check its maker’s instructions. Apple recommends contacting the manufacturer with questions about third-party chargers.
Apple’s wireless charging instructions also note that iPhone works with Qi-certified chargers used as accessories or built into cars, cafes, hotels, airports, and furniture.

Check non-charger accessories individually
Apple’s charging guidance cannot establish that every mount, wallet, battery pack, or third-party case will fit a new phone. For those accessories, check the maker’s compatibility information for the exact iPhone model, then test the function you need.
- Mount: Confirm the phone attaches securely and that the camera, buttons, and mount surfaces clear one another. If the mount charges the phone, test its charging behavior separately.
- Wallet: Confirm the maker supports the exact phone or case combination and check that the wallet attaches securely. Do not leave payment cards or other sensitive items between a phone and wireless charger.
- Battery pack: Verify exact-model support and the maker’s instructions for attachment and charging. A magnetic connection alone does not establish charging performance.
If an accessory fails, record the setup
Before contacting the accessory maker, note the exact iPhone model, accessory model, Apple charger part number if applicable, adapter’s wattage and voltage/current rating, and whether the setup works with the case removed. Those details help distinguish a fit problem from a charger, adapter, or case issue.
