Handle powerful neodymium magnets slowly, keep fingers out of their closing path, and store loose pieces separated in a secure place children cannot reach. Strong magnets can snap together or pull in nearby steel with enough force to injure fingers or damage equipment. If someone may have swallowed a magnet, seek immediate medical attention rather than waiting for symptoms.
How to handle powerful magnets
Work on a clear surface, away from steel tools, watches, electronics, displays, and magnetic recording media. Keep your hands and other objects out of the path where magnets could meet, and bring magnets together slowly so they do not snap into place. Strong permanent magnets can attract steel or other magnetic material with high mechanical force, which can injure fingers or damage nearby equipment, according to an FDA-hosted laboratory guide.
If two magnets join
Do not pull joined magnets straight apart. The same guide advises twisting them apart to reduce the risk of injury or damage. Its warning comes from instructions for a specified laboratory product; follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your own magnets as well.
How to store loose magnets
Keep loose magnets separated and in a secure location children cannot access. A closed, lockable compartment organizer may help keep small pieces apart and restrict access, but no cited official source evaluates or certifies a particular container, spacing, or organizer. Do not treat an organizer as a guarantee of safety; follow the magnet maker’s storage instructions.

The CPSC has urged owners to discard hazardous magnet sets where children might otherwise gain access. Its consumer magnet guidance addresses the risk of ingestion, not a certified storage system.
Keep magnets away from implants and sensitive equipment
Powerful magnetic fields can affect magnet-sensitive medical implants and nearby equipment. People with pacemakers should avoid close or prolonged contact with strong fields. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute advises keeping a pacemaker at least six inches from devices with strong fields, or using those devices only briefly when needed; advice may differ for a particular implant. Consult the implant manufacturer and a healthcare professional before handling powerful magnets if you have a pacemaker or another magnet-sensitive implant.

For other electronics and equipment, maintain distance and follow both the magnet maker’s and equipment maker’s instructions. The available guidance does not establish one safe distance for every device or implant.
What to do if someone swallows a magnet
If you suspect that someone has swallowed one or more magnets, seek immediate medical attention. Do not wait for symptoms. The CPSC lists abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea as possible symptoms, and warns that multiple pieces can appear as one object on an X-ray. Magnets swallowed separately can attract inside the body and cause serious intestinal injury.

The scale of the hazard is reflected in CPSC figures published September 7, 2022: the agency reported 26,600 magnet ingestions treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments from 2010 through 2021, and said it knew of seven deaths involving hazardous magnet ingestion, including two outside the United States. These are historical totals, not a current-year rate.

For covered U.S. consumer magnet products manufactured after October 21, 2022, the CPSC’s Safety Standard for Magnets, 16 CFR part 1262, requires each loose or separable magnet that fits entirely within the small-parts cylinder to have a flux index below 50 kG² mm². The rule covers specified consumer uses such as entertainment, jewelry, mental stimulation, and stress relief. It excludes products distributed solely to specified professional, educational, research, commercial, or industrial users; toys subject to the mandatory toy standard are addressed under that standard.
