Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a room still has weak Wi-Fi after you install a mesh system, first check whether the problem is the internet connection, a single device, or the mesh link serving that room. Then move the satellite closer to its parent node until its app reports a healthy connection, and retest the room. A satellite placed inside a dead zone may have too weak a connection to extend coverage. Add another compatible node only after checking placement and backhaul.
1. Find out whether the dead zone affects one device or the whole room
Test the problem area with more than one phone, laptop, or other Wi-Fi device. If only one device struggles, its Wi-Fi hardware or settings may be the cause; client devices do not all reach the same speeds. If several devices lose signal in the same place, look more closely at mesh coverage, the satellite’s connection, and interference. Linksys notes that client hardware can limit network performance.
2. Separate an internet-service problem from a Wi-Fi problem
If possible, connect a computer by Ethernet directly to the modem and check connectivity or speed. Compare that result with a Wi-Fi test near the main mesh router. If the wired connection is also slow or unavailable, investigate the modem or contact your internet service provider. If wired service is healthy but Wi-Fi is poor, focus on the wireless links and coverage. A speed test in a distant room is not a direct measure of whether your internet plan or mesh hardware is at fault. Linksys recommends checking the connection directly at the modem before troubleshooting the mesh.
3. Check the satellite’s connection to the rest of the mesh
Open your mesh system’s app and inspect the satellite serving the weak area. Look for its signal, link quality, or connection status to the main router or parent node. Mesh has two links to consider: the connection from your device to a nearby node, and the node-to-node backhaul that carries traffic toward the main router. A satellite needs a useful backhaul connection to deliver reliable service. NETGEAR describes backhaul as the connection carrying data between the main mesh router and its satellites.

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Use the indicator and recommendations for your specific system rather than a universal bar count. For example, TP-Link recommends at least two bars of signal from the source Deco in its placement guidance; that is a Deco-specific recommendation, not a standard for other brands. Check TP-Link’s Deco placement guide or your manufacturer’s app and support instructions.
4. Reposition the node and retest
Move the satellite a little closer to its parent node, check the app’s link quality again, and test the original dead zone. Repeat in small steps until the satellite has a stronger upstream connection while still serving the target area. Placement is iterative: walls, floors, construction materials, and interference make a fixed distance unreliable across homes.

- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Set the node in an open location rather than inside a cabinet, behind a television, on the floor, or directly beside a thick wall or large metal object. Keep it away from likely sources of radio interference, including microwaves and some cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, and baby monitors. Household devices and Wi-Fi can share crowded radio space, particularly on 2.4 GHz. NETGEAR lists environmental and device factors that can affect Wi-Fi performance.
Manufacturer spacing examples apply to their own products, not mesh systems generally. Google says its Wifi points should generally be about one to two rooms apart; use that as Google Wifi guidance rather than a rule for another system. See Google’s Google Wifi information.

5. Retest consistently and rule out client or network load
After each placement change, test in the same room with the same device and method so you can tell whether the change helped. Temporarily pause large downloads, cloud backups, or streaming, then restart the affected client and reconnect to Wi-Fi. If your device and mesh support 5 GHz or 6 GHz, you can check those bands too; they require client support and their usefulness depends on signal reach. Linksys includes these checks in its mesh troubleshooting guidance. Review Linksys’ slow Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.
6. Restart and update before considering a reset
If the node’s link looks healthy but the connection remains unstable, restart the modem and mesh equipment in the order specified by the manufacturer. In general, let the modem reconnect before powering up the main node and satellites. Check the system app for firmware updates. Treat a factory reset as a later step: it erases configuration and is not a first response to a coverage gap. Linksys’ intermittent-connection guidance covers restart and reset troubleshooting.

7. Decide whether wired backhaul or another device is justified
If distance or building materials keep the wireless backhaul weak, a wired connection between nodes may help when your system supports Ethernet backhaul and you can route a cable. TP-Link describes wired backhaul as more stable and faster than wireless backhaul; NETGEAR also identifies Ethernet as an alternative backhaul path. Confirm support for your exact mesh model before buying an Ethernet cable for mesh backhaul. The cable length and route depend on your home and installation.
If cabling is impractical, compare the remaining options against the actual weak spot:

- 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐖𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 & 𝐖𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐥: Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 and 10G Ethernet work together to balance traffic between Deco units for faster, more stable whole-home coverage. Backhaul requires at least two Deco units.
- Another mesh satellite: Check the exact brand, model family, and generation for compatibility, then ensure the proposed location can still get a good upstream link. More nodes do not automatically improve performance; Google warns that more than five points in a Google Wifi network might degrade performance. Check Google’s product guidance before expanding that system. Search for a compatible mesh Wi-Fi node only after verifying compatibility.
- Range extender: Consider one for a limited weak spot, but place it where it can receive a usable signal from the existing network; an extender cannot relay a strong connection if its own link is poor.
- Powerline adapter: This carries network traffic over electrical wiring. TP-Link notes that its adapters must share the same electrical circuit, so suitability depends on the home’s wiring and layout.
These devices and systems are not automatically interchangeable. TP-Link compares mesh, range-extender, and powerline approaches, and explains extender placement. Check the support information for your existing system before purchasing a node or extender.
