Yes. Microsoft now documents a Windows 11 setting that moves the taskbar to the top, left, or right edge of the screen, as well as the bottom. The control is rolling out gradually, so it may not appear on every PC yet.
How to move the Windows 11 taskbar
- Open Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors.
- Open Taskbar position and choose Top, Left, Right, or Bottom.
The position control is documented in Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 KB5120998 preview update notes for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, which describe the feature as a gradual rollout.
What changes by taskbar position?
The taskbar has four position choices, but Microsoft documents a few position-specific differences:
- The search box and the smaller taskbar option are supported only when the taskbar is at the top or bottom.
- Tooltips, flyouts, and animations continue to work in the other positions.
- Most taskbar customization settings, including never combining taskbar icons, work in all positions.
In practice, choose the screen edge that suits your layout, keeping in mind that moving the bar to the left or right means giving up the search box and smaller-taskbar option for now.

What if “Taskbar position” is missing?
Microsoft says the feature is rolling out gradually, so the option may not yet be available on your device. Its update notes name Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 preview builds 26100.9278 and 26200.9278, respectively. A missing control alone does not show that Windows is broken; availability depends on the update and rollout status for the PC.
Why Microsoft’s taskbar help pages differ
Microsoft’s general Windows 11 taskbar customization page still says there are no settings for moving the taskbar to the top or side. That statement conflicts with the newer, dated KB5120998 update notes, which explicitly document the position setting. Microsoft’s taskbar accessibility overview also describes moving it to the top, left, or right. For the newly introduced control, the dated rollout notes are the more specific guidance; the general customization page has not caught up.
