Place each mesh Wi-Fi node partway between the main router—or another well-connected node—and the area with weak coverage. A node needs a usable connection back to the mesh; putting it directly in a dead zone can leave the node poorly connected too. Use your system’s app or mesh test to check the link, then adjust the position until it reports a strong connection.

How to place a mesh node

  1. Find the weak areas. Note which rooms need better Wi-Fi and identify the main mesh router and any existing nodes.
  2. Choose a candidate location between the router and the weak area. Keep the node close enough to the router or another mesh unit to maintain a usable connection, while moving it in the direction of the room that needs coverage.
  3. Put it in an open, elevated spot. Avoid cabinets, placement behind a TV, large metal objects, and other substantial obstructions. Keeping the node off the floor may help.
  4. Check the node-to-mesh link. Run the mesh test or inspect the connection indicator in the system’s app. If the link is weak, move the node closer to its upstream unit or to a more open position, then check again.
  5. Address interference where practical. TP-Link identifies microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and USB 3.0 devices as potential sources of 2.4 GHz interference. Moving the node away from these devices may help; test the result in the app.
  6. Consider another node only after repositioning. If existing nodes still leave weak areas after you test better positions, check whether an additional compatible node is an option. Google recommends considering another point when moving existing points does not resolve weak coverage.

These steps apply broadly, but the best position depends on the system and the home. Walls, floors, materials, layout, interference, and node model all affect the connection and coverage.

How far apart should mesh nodes be?

There is no universal spacing rule. Manufacturers give different starting points for their own systems; these figures are not guaranteed coverage radii and are not directly interchangeable. Treat them as guidance, then use your system’s connection check to judge a real location.

Manufacturer or system Published spacing guidance How to interpret it
Google Wifi and Nest Wifi Points work best no more than two rooms apart, according to Google’s placement guidance. Use the Google Home app’s mesh test to verify the connection at the chosen position.
Linksys mesh Linksys generally advises keeping child nodes within two rooms or one floor of each other and limiting intervening walls and obstacles, in its mesh connectivity FAQ. This is general Linksys guidance, not a promise that every home or model will work at that spacing.
TP-Link Deco TP-Link says Deco units should be no more than 50 feet apart for best wireless performance in its Deco range guidance, last updated May 8, 2026. The page notes that spacing can be more flexible with Ethernet backhaul; the recommendation concerns Deco systems.
ASUS ZenWiFi ASUS recommends 10–15 meters between ZenWiFi nodes in its whole-home mesh Wi-Fi guidance, last updated August 5, 2024. This is ASUS guidance for ZenWiFi, not a cross-brand standard.

Even when a node falls within its manufacturer’s suggested distance, a wall, floor, metal obstruction, or room layout can weaken its link. If the app reports a poor connection, trust that result over a tape-measure estimate and try another position.

  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router

What to do if a node shows a weak connection

  • Move it closer to the router or another node with a strong connection.
  • Try an open location with fewer walls, floors, or other substantial obstacles between units.
  • Raise it off the floor and move it away from cabinets, TVs, large metal objects, or likely interference sources.
  • Check the system’s app or run its mesh test again after each move so you can tell whether the link improved.

Make one change at a time where possible. That makes it easier to identify which position gives the satellite a better connection while still extending coverage toward the weak area.

Should you use Ethernet backhaul?

If your mesh system supports Ethernet backhaul and you can run a cable between units, it replaces the wireless node-to-node link with a wired one. TP-Link describes wired backhaul as more stable and faster than wireless backhaul for Deco. ASUS notes that wireless is simpler to set up, while Ethernet requires cabling. Check your specific model’s setup rules: Ethernet backhaul is not supported on every product, and wireless spacing guidance may still matter for devices connecting to the nodes.
