To choose an energy-efficient refrigerator, first make sure it fits your kitchen and household; then compare the EnergyGuide label’s annual kilowatt-hours (kWh) among models with similar capacity and layout. Check the exact model’s ENERGY STAR status, estimate electricity cost using your local rate, and consider its refrigerant and end-of-life recycling. The guidance and labels below apply to the U.S. market.

1. Measure the space and choose only the capacity you need

Before comparing energy ratings, measure the refrigerator opening, the route into the kitchen, and the clearance needed for the doors and drawers to open. Check the manufacturer’s installation instructions for ventilation space; a refrigerator that fits the opening but cannot circulate air as specified is not a good fit.

Capacity matters as well as exterior dimensions. ENERGY STAR advises choosing an appropriately sized refrigerator: larger refrigerators generally use more energy. It says the most energy-efficient models are typically 16–20 cubic feet, but that range is a reference—not a universal target. Choose enough room for your household’s usual groceries without paying to cool space you do not need.

Compare shelf and drawer layouts against how you store food. A nominal capacity figure does not tell you whether a particular arrangement will work for your kitchen or shopping habits.

2. Compare annual kWh on the EnergyGuide label

In the United States, the yellow EnergyGuide label reports estimated yearly energy use in kWh and an estimated annual operating cost, alongside a comparison range for similar models. The Federal Trade Commission explains how to use the EnergyGuide label. Compare compact refrigerators with compact models and, where possible, compare similar capacities and configurations; a larger or differently arranged refrigerator is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Use annual kWh as the more portable measure. To estimate electricity cost at your own rate, multiply the label’s annual kWh by your utility’s price per kWh. For example, a label showing 400 kWh per year at a household rate of $0.20 per kWh implies about $80 in annual electricity use (400 × $0.20). This is an estimate, not a promise about your bill: the label’s cost figure uses typical use and a national-average electricity price, while actual consumption and rates vary.

ENERGY STAR’s Flip Your Fridge calculator also uses inputs such as electricity rate, refrigerator type, approximate model year, and capacity. Its savings estimates vary with use and upkeep.

3. Treat ENERGY STAR certification as a useful screen, not a ranking

ENERGY STAR says certified refrigerators are about 9% more energy efficient than models that meet the federal minimum standard. Its criteria page states that covered refrigerator categories use at least 10% less measured energy than the applicable federal minimum; the listed criteria change took effect August 5, 2021. These are different ways of describing the program’s comparison and should not be read as a guarantee that every certified refrigerator uses the same amount of electricity.

Certification helps narrow your choices, but it does not identify the lowest-use model among all certified options. Compare the EnergyGuide kWh for the models that fit your needs, and confirm the exact model number in the ENERGY STAR refrigerator criteria and product information. “ENERGY STAR Most Efficient” is a separate, year-specific recognition; check the current year’s criteria and listing before relying on that designation.

4. Choose a layout with its energy trade-offs in mind

ENERGY STAR says top-freezer refrigerators tend to use the least energy compared with bottom-freezer and side-by-side models. It also notes that fewer doors can reduce air leakage. These are general tendencies, not substitutes for comparing annual kWh: a particular model’s measured use is the better guide when comparing suitable alternatives.

  • Multi-door: Consider how the storage layout serves your household, and compare its annual kWh with similar-capacity options.

5. Consider refrigerant separately from electricity use

Refrigerant affects climate impact if gas escapes; it is a different consideration from the electricity the refrigerator consumes during operation. If the manufacturer discloses the refrigerant, ENERGY STAR identifies R-600a and R-441A as lower-global-warming-potential options. Do not treat refrigerant type as a replacement for checking annual kWh.

6. Compare the total cost, including recycling and rebates

A lower purchase price does not necessarily mean the lower-cost choice over the time you own the refrigerator. Consider the price, estimated electricity cost over your intended ownership period, and any rebate you can verify for your location. ENERGY STAR provides a zip-code-based rebate finder and refrigerator guidance; confirm a program’s current eligibility and terms before counting a rebate in your budget.

ENERGY STAR estimates that properly recycling an old refrigerator and replacing it with a new ENERGY STAR certified model can save about $150 over the new refrigerator’s 12-year lifetime. That is the program’s estimate for this replacement-and-recycling scenario, not a guaranteed saving for every household.

7. Use this checklist before buying

  1. Measure first: Check the opening, route into the kitchen, door swing, and required installation clearances.
  2. Set a realistic capacity: Choose a size that fits your household’s needs; larger models generally use more energy.
  3. Compare like with like: Review annual EnergyGuide kWh for models of similar capacity and configuration.
  4. Calculate local electricity cost: Multiply annual kWh by your actual price per kWh, treating the result as an estimate.
  5. Check certification: Verify the exact model number and distinguish ordinary ENERGY STAR certification from the separate, year-specific Most Efficient recognition.
  6. Review other purchase factors: Consider layout, disclosed refrigerant, verified local rebates, and responsible recycling of the old appliance.

8. Reduce energy use after installation

ENERGY STAR recommends setting the refrigerator to 35–38°F, placing it away from heat sources, and leaving a few inches behind it for air circulation. Keep door seals airtight and limit how long the door stays open. When replacing an old unit, arrange for it to be recycled responsibly rather than leaving it in service or discarding it without checking local options.

When a product example is not a recommendation

The ENERGY STAR Product Finder record for the Thermador T24UR915LS lists 5.2 cubic feet, 274 kWh per year, and a 307 kWh federal standard. It records certification on July 20, 2021, and a market date of August 1, 2021, and lists the United States and Canada. These figures describe that record; they do not establish current retail availability or make the model a suitable choice for a particular kitchen.
