If an interviewer or background investigator raises an old or offensive social media post, be accurate about your connection to it, explain the context briefly, acknowledge its impact, and describe what you have learned or changed. A careful answer can clarify the facts; it cannot guarantee a favorable vetting decision. Agencies and jurisdictions use different processes, so follow the recruiting agency’s instructions and answer all forms truthfully.
Will a police department review your social media?
Assume public posts may be reviewed, but do not assume every agency searches the same way or at the same stage. California POST guidance places social media review within the background investigation. Nottinghamshire Police says social media checks form part of its vetting process after its interview stage. Those are jurisdiction- and agency-specific examples, not a universal sequence.
That distinction matters: a selection interview and a background or vetting interview may be separate steps. California POST describes a discrepancy interview when investigators identify an inconsistency or concern; the agency’s own recruiter or background unit is the best source for its process. See the California POST Background Investigation Manual and Nottinghamshire Police recruitment process.
What investigators may consider
A post is not assessed solely by how old it is or whether it has been deleted. Relevant considerations in official guidance include what it says or depicts, the context, how often similar material appeared, how recently it was posted, the applicant’s age at the time, how identifiable the applicant was, whether the content indicates a pattern, and whether the applicant’s account is consistent with other verified information.

California POST’s manual says social media review should focus on candidate statements, postings, or endorsements relevant to suitability and comply with state and federal law. It advises considering substance, context, frequency, recency, and positive attributes that may mitigate past behavior. In England and Wales, a January 2024 College of Policing consultation draft listed additional contextual factors, including age at the time, elapsed time, platform, identifiability, and patterns of discriminatory, abusive, harassing, bullying, or other offensive activity. That document is consultation material, not a basis for presenting every detail as final current guidance. Read the College of Policing consultation draft.
For England and Wales, the Vetting Code of Practice says cases should be decided on their individual merits, taking relevant information and risk into account. It sets expectations for chief officers in those jurisdictions and was updated on 20 July 2023; it is not a worldwide standard. Read the Vetting Code of Practice.

How to answer questions about a post
Use this practical framework, derived from the guidance rather than an official required script. Keep the answer direct and factual; do not use context to dismiss the effect of the content.
- Identify your connection. Say whether you wrote it, reposted or endorsed it, or were tagged in it. If the account or post is wrongly attributed to you, explain that plainly and state what you know.
- Give concise context. If you know the date and circumstances, explain them. Describe what the words or image conveyed rather than relying on “it was taken out of context” as a complete answer.
- Acknowledge the problem. Explain what was wrong or why a reasonable person might see it as undermining respect, judgment, impartiality, or trust.
- Describe reflection and change. If true, say what you understand now and identify specific actions or sustained conduct that support that change—such as correcting the post, apologizing, or learning from the experience.
- Answer follow-up questions accurately. Do not guess at what the investigator wants to hear or invent details. If you do not remember a date or fact, say so and offer to verify it.
New Zealand Police recruiting guidance encourages candidates to focus on their own actions and outcomes and notes that honest reflection on imperfect experiences can show potential and growth. That is general interview guidance, not a promise about the outcome of police vetting. See New Zealand Police formal interview guidance.

What not to do
- Do not deny authorship or involvement if the facts show otherwise. California POST guidance calls for a complete explanation of discrepancies. Its manual says that, at the start of a discrepancy interview, the candidate should receive a written description of each issue and ample opportunity to explain it; that is California guidance, not a guaranteed format everywhere.
- Do not treat deletion, privacy settings, or the post’s age as a defense. They do not make an inaccurate answer safe or establish that the content is irrelevant. The sources do not establish that candidates must retain every post or account; the practical point is to answer questions and disclosure forms accurately.
- Do not lean on “everyone said it.” A claim about what others posted does not explain your own words or actions.
- Do not overstate change. Explain only steps you actually took and can describe honestly.
California POST says investigators should give candidates a chance to explain discrepancies. In the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office says employers conducting public-social-media pre-employment vetting should be able to justify the check, tell candidates about it, consider their comments, and avoid treating online information alone as a fair or reliable basis for a decision. That is UK employer guidance, not a universal rule for every police jurisdiction. Read the ICO guidance on pre-employment vetting.
Why outcomes vary
There is no reliable population-wide percentage showing the odds that an applicant with problematic posts will pass police vetting. Agency standards, jurisdiction, the seriousness and pattern of the material, its connection to the applicant, and the evidence of reflection all matter. Nottinghamshire Police lists circumstances that can lead to automatic decline in its process; those criteria should not be treated as rules for other forces.

Inspection findings also need careful interpretation. HMICFRS reported that none of the reviewed applicant files containing concerning social media information led to rejection, but that finding describes only the files in that inspection, not a pass rate or evidence that concerning content is harmless. The inspection also found some decision rationales did not mention the content and emphasized recording risks and rationale. Read the HMICFRS inspection report.
A 2021 California State Auditor report reviewed five departments and found social media screening was often limited or poorly documented, restricting the departments’ ability to identify potential bias. Only San José Police documented broader searches for accounts beyond those applicants disclosed. This audit describes the departments reviewed at that time; it does not establish current practice at every California agency. Read California State Auditor Report 2021-105.

Before the interview
- Review the agency’s application and disclosure instructions; ask the recruiter or background unit about process questions.
- For any post you expect may be raised, make sure you can distinguish what you authored, shared, endorsed, or were merely tagged in.
- Think through the context, what was wrong, and what—if anything—you genuinely changed afterward.
- Keep your account consistent with the application and other information you have provided. If you discover an error or omission, ask the agency how to correct it rather than waiting to be confronted.
Preparation is not the same as rehearsing a story. The goal is to be ready to give a truthful, specific answer and to correct misunderstandings without minimizing conduct that could reasonably concern an agency.
