Build the monitor as three separate pieces: fetch a price from a source you are permitted to use, evaluate it against a threshold or change rule, and send a Discord message when that rule matches. Then run the job with a scheduler on a host that remains available. The retailer, check frequency, alert condition, timezone, and hosting setup are configurable; there is no single API or deployment method that fits every store.
Choose the price source and schedule before writing the job
First identify a stable, permitted way to obtain the price. Prefer a retailer-supported API or another source whose access conditions explicitly allow your intended use. A public product page is not automatically a reliable or permitted data feed: page structure can change, and the selected provider may set access or polling limits. Do not evade access controls. Check the selected source’s current terms, account eligibility, and cadence limits before deciding how often to poll.
Amazon-specific documentation illustrates why provider details should not be generalized: its Associates help page states an initial Product Advertising API allowance of one request per second per account, while a separate troubleshooting page references Product Advertising API deprecation. Those are Amazon-specific, potentially changing details—not a recommended polling rate or a guarantee of access. Verify current documentation for your account and marketplace before relying on either claim: Amazon Associates API usage help and Amazon API troubleshooting.

Next choose whether the schedule is elapsed-time based or tied to a wall-clock time. A check every N minutes is an interval schedule; a check at a particular local time is a cron-style schedule. Wall-clock schedules need an explicit timezone and a decision about daylight-saving changes. APScheduler documents interval, cron, one-time date, and calendar-interval triggers, along with the separate roles of schedules, jobs, data stores, and executors in its user guide.

Choose where the recurring job runs
| Approach | Where scheduling happens | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| APScheduler inside your Python application | The application process manages recurring work. | The process must remain available. Decide whether schedule state should survive a restart; a persistent data store can preserve scheduler state, but does not keep the host running or prove that missed checks were delivered. |
| Operating-system scheduler or hosted scheduled-job service | The operating system or hosting service starts the script at the configured times. | Configure the launch command, environment, timezone, logs, and retry behavior in that scheduler. Make sure the host or service actually runs at the intended times. |
An in-process scheduler is appropriate when you deliberately keep a supervised application running. If you want short-lived executions, an external scheduler may be a better fit. Neither choice removes the need to handle restarts, failed fetches, and missed runs explicitly. APScheduler’s scheduling concepts and persistence options are described in its user guide; timezone and daylight-saving considerations for cron-style triggers are covered in its API documentation.
Separate configuration, fetching, alert decisions, and delivery
Keep values that may change out of the monitoring logic: the item identifier or URL, schedule, target price, currency, and Discord webhook URL. Store secrets such as the webhook URL in environment configuration or a secrets manager rather than source control, and redact them from logs.

Fetch and validate a price
Implement a provider-specific fetch_price(). It should make the permitted request, use an explicit timeout, inspect the HTTP status, validate the response shape, and return a normalized price plus the observation time. Requests warns that calls do not time out automatically unless a timeout is specified and recommends using one for nearly all production requests. Its documentation explains the timeout parameter and how to handle response and request errors.
Keep connection or timeout failures distinct from an invalid HTTP response and from malformed provider data. Do not turn any of those failures into a zero price or send a price alert based on a value you did not successfully retrieve. Normalize currency and decimal precision consistently before comparing values; do not compare prices in different currencies as if they were equivalent.

Make the alert rule explicit
Put the decision in a separate, testable function such as should_alert(current, previous, threshold). A threshold rule can notify when the current price is at or below a target; a change rule can notify on a decrease or on an absolute or percentage change large enough to matter. The right rule depends on what you want to know.
Store prior observations only if the selected rule needs them, and store the last alert state when needed to avoid sending the same notification on every run while the condition remains true. If you need price history, retain timestamped observations rather than relying only on the most recent value.

Send a Discord message with an incoming webhook
For one-way alerts into a channel, a Discord incoming webhook is a direct option: it is an HTTP endpoint associated with a channel. Discord lists monitoring alerts and scheduled reports among the uses for incoming webhooks. Treat the webhook URL as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to post through it.
Post a concise message containing the item, observed price and currency, condition that triggered the alert, and observation time. Treat a successful HTTP response as acknowledgement of delivery, not proof that a person read the message. Handle errors deliberately: an HTTP 429 response means you should honor the response’s Retry-After header or retry_after field, while a 404 from the webhook URL should be treated as invalid or missing configuration—not retried forever. Discord cautions in its rate-limit documentation: “Because rate limits depend on a variety of factors and are subject to change, rate limits should not be hard coded into your app.”

Put the pieces together and run the job safely
- Configure the inputs. Supply the provider credentials or item identifier, polling schedule, timezone if applicable, alert rule, and Discord webhook URL through configuration rather than hard-coding secrets.
- Run one manual check. Call the fetch, decision, and delivery functions once. Confirm that the provider response is valid, the normalized price is sensible, and a test alert reaches the intended channel before enabling recurring runs.
- Register the recurring job. With APScheduler, choose an interval or cron trigger that matches the intended schedule; alternatively, configure an operating-system or hosted scheduler to launch the script. Check that the chosen host is available when the job is due.
- Log useful outcomes. Record run time, fetch success or failure, the observed price when valid, and whether an alert was sent. Never log the full webhook URL or provider credentials.
- Plan for recovery. After a restart, inspect the scheduler and application logs to determine whether a run occurred. Persistence can preserve scheduling state, but it does not itself rerun missed checks or repair a failed provider request; choose retry and catch-up behavior appropriate to your scheduler and data source.
This guide describes a design, not a tested deployment: the provider request, scheduler configuration, and webhook delivery must be verified in your own environment. Exact code depends on the retailer’s permitted interface, the response format, and the hosting system.
