Use a token-unlock calendar to spot upcoming releases, then verify important dates and amounts against project disclosures or vesting-contract data. Track who receives the tokens, how large the release is relative to circulating supply, and whether trading liquidity can absorb it. An unlock means restricted tokens may become available; it does not prove they have been claimed or sold, and it is not a reliable price-drop forecast.
What a token unlock tells you—and what it does not
A token unlock is the scheduled release of tokens that were previously restricted, often under a vesting arrangement. It indicates a change in availability, not a confirmed sale. The steps from availability to market impact are distinct: a beneficiary may claim tokens, transfer them, stake or hold them, hedge exposure, or sell them. A calendar entry alone cannot tell you which will happen.
Also distinguish release types. A cliff is a larger scheduled release at a particular point in time; linear vesting releases tokens gradually; and ongoing issuance adds supply over time. Trackers may display these differently, so check the event label and allocation rather than treating every calendar item as the same kind of supply event.
Choose a calendar as a starting point
For discovery, Tokenomist documents overview views for notable cliff events and average daily linear releases, as well as token pages with emissions, allocations, vesting schedules, unlock progress, and events. See its documentation and overview. CoinMarketCap’s token unlock listing includes circulating supply, unlock progress, next unlock, and date fields. Tokenomics.com also provides a live calendar with event amounts and percentage fields.

These services help you monitor events; they are not substitutes for the project’s own tokenomics disclosures or on-chain vesting data. Interfaces and feature availability can change, and live listings may update. Use the calendar to build a watchlist, then validate material events at the source.
A repeatable workflow for tracking an unlock
- Build a watchlist and horizon. Add the tokens you follow to a calendar or dashboard and choose a review window that gives you time to verify significant events. Treat alerts as prompts to investigate, not trading signals.
- Record the event’s key fields. For each material release, note the token amount, date and time, whether it is a cliff or linear release, the recipient allocation, the amount already unlocked, circulating supply, and the release as a percentage of circulating supply. Compare the event with available market liquidity and order-book depth. The same nominal release may be easier to absorb in a deep market than in a thin one; this comparison is not a formula for predicting price impact.
- Check how precise the date is. Look for the tracker’s methodology and any indication that a date is estimated. Tokenomist explains that broad disclosures such as “monthly vesting after TGE” require an assumption; its documented example uses the same day of each following month after identifying the TGE date. That estimate is not equivalent to an exact timestamp specified by a contract. Cross-check project announcements, token documentation, and vesting-contract data before treating a calendar date as firm.
- Identify who receives the allocation. Record whether tokens are allocated to investors, team members, a community, an ecosystem fund, or another group when that information is available. Allocation can inform your questions about potential selling, but it cannot establish what any recipient will do.
- Separate the schedule from actual movement. An unlock may make tokens eligible for withdrawal, but beneficiaries may not claim or move them on that date. When relevant, look for on-chain claims or wallet transfers; even a transfer does not by itself prove a sale on an exchange.
- Review before and after the date. Set reminders for a pre-event check, the scheduled date, and a follow-up. Revisit the schedule if the project announces changes, then check whether tokens moved and how market conditions developed. Public schedules can affect positioning before the release itself.
How to judge the scale of a release
Do not rely on the dollar value alone. Compare the number of tokens being released with circulating supply, then consider the allocation and the market’s liquidity and depth. A release that is large relative to the existing circulating supply may warrant closer monitoring, but neither size nor allocation supplies a dependable price-impact threshold. Liquidity matters because the market’s ability to absorb potential selling can differ substantially between assets and over time.

Keep the supply terms straight when recording figures: unlocked describes eligibility under the schedule; claimed means a beneficiary has taken possession; circulating refers to supply counted as circulating under the source’s methodology; and sold requires evidence of a sale. Trackers and projects may use different definitions, so note the source and avoid treating these figures as interchangeable.
Do unlocks cause a price drop?
No calendar can establish that a particular unlock will cause a decline. The schedule makes a possible source of supply visible, but recipients may hold, stake, transfer, hedge, or sell, and market participants may respond before the event.

A 2023 analysis by 6th Man Ventures authors Mustafa Qazi and Carl Vogel examined more than 5,000 unlock events across 20 protocols, checking schedule data against on-chain information and/or protocol teams. They reported that small events increasing circulating supply by 0% to 1% had no meaningful relationship to price in that dataset, while larger unlocks showed a noticeable negative relationship. The authors also reported differences by timeframe and discussed anticipatory price behavior, outlier market events, and short squeezes as complications. These are historical observational findings, not a safe threshold or a forecast for an individual token. Read the 6th Man Ventures analysis for its scope and limitations.
The practical takeaway is to treat an unlock as a potential supply overhang to investigate, not a prediction that selling will occur. There is no universal conversion from unlock size to an expected price decline established by the evidence cited here.

What to check when comparing tracking tools
- Sources and verification: Does the service identify project disclosures, contract data, or other source material behind its entries?
- Date precision: Can you tell an exact contract timestamp from an estimate inferred from broad vesting language?
- Release coverage: Are cliffs, linear vesting, issuance, and allocations included and labeled separately?
- Relative scale: Can you see both token amount and percentage of circulating supply rather than dollar value alone?
- Schedule changes: Does the service show whether dates or amounts have been revised?
- Claims visibility: Where available, does it distinguish scheduled or unlocked supply from tokens actually claimed?
Tokenomist’s documentation describes several of these fields and its date assumptions; CoinMarketCap’s listing provides a simpler view of circulating supply, unlock progress, and next-event details. Check each service’s current interface rather than assuming a feature remains available or free.
