For routine browsing, HTTPS and sensible account and device security are generally enough; the Federal Trade Commission says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because websites widely use encryption. A VPN can still be useful for a specific reason, such as limiting what a local network or internet provider can observe, but it shifts some trust to the VPN company rather than making you anonymous.
Do you need a VPN for everyday browsing?
Most people do not need a personal VPN solely to browse websites, check email, or use public Wi-Fi. The FTC says widespread website encryption means connecting through public Wi-Fi is usually safe. Look for HTTPS or a lock icon in the browser, and keep your browser and device updated. FTC: Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know
A VPN may make sense if you have a particular privacy need: for example, you want to reduce what the operator of a Wi-Fi network or your internet service provider can see about your connection. It is not a universal security upgrade. Consider who you are trying to keep information from, what information matters, and whether you trust the VPN operator.
Is public Wi-Fi safe without a VPN?
For ordinary browsing of HTTPS-protected sites, generally yes, according to the FTC. HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the website, helping protect the content exchanged even when the Wi-Fi network itself is public. Confirm the address begins with HTTPS; do not treat a VPN as a substitute for checking the connection or keeping accounts secure.

What does a VPN hide from my ISP?
A VPN creates a connection through a VPN operator. This can limit the details a local network or ISP can see about your traffic, but it does not make the traffic invisible to everyone: the VPN provider becomes a party you must trust and may be able to see traffic information. The Electronic Frontier Foundation explains that metadata, including domains visited and timing, can remain visible along a network path; a VPN may conceal some of it from a local observer while exposing it to the VPN operator. HTTPS remains important with a VPN enabled. It protects content between your browser and the website; a VPN changes the route and who can observe some connection information, not the need for end-to-end website encryption. A VPN also does not prevent websites from tracking you through information you provide or other tracking methods.
Does a VPN make you anonymous?
No. A VPN can change which network intermediary sees some connection details, but websites may still identify or track you through account logins, information you submit, cookies, and other techniques. The VPN provider may also have access to traffic information. EFF distinguishes VPN use from tools intended to provide stronger anonymity, such as Tor Browser; Tor has a different trust model and its own usability and performance trade-offs, so it is not simply another name for a VPN. Is a VPN worth it if websites use HTTPS?
It depends on what you want to protect. HTTPS encrypts website content in transit between your browser and the site. A VPN may additionally reduce what a local network or ISP can observe, but it routes traffic through a provider that you must evaluate. It may also affect connection performance. If your main concern is routine browsing and account safety, HTTPS, strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and updates may address the more relevant basics without adding another provider to trust.
Which option fits your need?
| Option | Best fit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| No personal VPN | Routine HTTPS browsing with sound account and device security. | A reasonable choice for many everyday users; public Wi-Fi use alone does not automatically require a VPN, according to the FTC. |
| Consumer VPN | A specific need to limit what a local network or ISP can observe. | Moves trust to the VPN provider; it does not provide anonymity or replace HTTPS, and may affect performance. |
| Employer-provided remote-access VPN | Connecting employees or vendors to an organization’s systems under its policies. | This is for secure business access, not a blanket consumer recommendation for everyday browsing. FTC: Secure remote access |
| Tor Browser | People whose goal is increased anonymity and who understand the different tool and trade-offs. | EFF presents Tor as a different fit from a consumer VPN; neither tool removes every way a site can identify a user. EFF guidance |
How to evaluate a VPN before trusting it
A VPN app may be able to handle sensitive network traffic, so judge its practices rather than relying on a privacy slogan. The FTC reported that a 2018 study of almost 300 VPN apps found potential privacy and security risks with some apps, including some that did not use encryption, requested unexpected sensitive permissions, or shared information with third parties. That study size is not a measure of how many apps are unsafe; it is a reason to check the specific app. FTC: In the market for a VPN app?

- Read the privacy policy: Check what information the provider collects, how long it retains it, whether it shares data, and how it handles legal requests.
- Inspect permissions: Ask whether each permission requested by the app makes sense for a VPN.
- Check encryption: Verify that the service uses encryption; do not take marketing language alone as proof.
- Seek independent scrutiny: Look for independent reviews and meaningful transparency about privacy claims. A provider’s own claim is not independent evidence.
- Keep baseline protections in place: Leave HTTPS enabled, use strong unique passwords and two-factor authentication, and update your browser, operating system, and devices. The U.S. Government Publishing Office cybersecurity handbook also covers staying safe online.
Choose based on the observer you are concerned about
Before installing a VPN, name the risk you want to address. If the concern is a network operator or ISP seeing some connection details, a carefully chosen VPN may help shift that visibility. If the concern is website tracking, scams, phishing, malware, or account takeover, a VPN alone does not solve it; focus on site-level privacy choices, cautious link handling, account protections, and updated software. If the need is access to work systems, use the employer’s approved remote-access method and follow its policies.
