To verify a crypto project’s claims, start with the exact token contract and network, then check supply, liquidity, and exchange listings as three separate questions. A ticker or listing badge alone proves little: names can be duplicated, a DEX pool can be too shallow for a meaningful trade, and an aggregator entry does not establish an active market on a major exchange.

Start by confirming the exact token and network

Find the contract address and network in the project’s official documentation or announcement. Search that address—not just the token name or ticker—on the relevant block explorer. Confirm the address, network, token name, and decimals match the project’s claim. If the asset is a chain’s native coin rather than a contract token, use the chain’s official or independently documented explorer sources.

Keep wrapped, bridged, and separately issued versions distinct. The same ticker may refer to different assets on different networks, and a bridge can create a representation of a token rather than another unit of the original issuance. Record which version you are checking before comparing supply, pool, or exchange data.

How do I check a token’s circulating supply?

Record total supply, circulating supply, and maximum supply separately, along with the source and the time you checked. They describe different things:

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
  • Total supply: CoinMarketCap defines this as coins in existence, net of verifiably burned coins. It includes locked and unlocked supply. CoinMarketCap’s supply definitions.
  • Circulating supply: an estimate of tokens available to the public. CoinGecko calculates it by subtracting uncirculated holdings, such as team and foundation wallets, from total supply; a token can be unlocked but still excluded if it remains in an uncirculated wallet. CoinGecko’s methodology.
  • Maximum supply: a lifetime ceiling, when one exists. CoinMarketCap describes it as the best estimate of the maximum coins that will ever exist, net of verifiable burns. Not every token has a fixed maximum.

Reconcile the estimate against disclosed wallets

  1. Check the contract and explorer for current total supply and relevant mint or burn activity.
  2. Look for a distribution table or disclosures identifying team, foundation, treasury, investor, vesting, ecosystem, and other locked or uncirculated addresses.
  3. Compare those addresses’ current on-chain balances with the project’s disclosures. CoinGecko says it retrieves locked-address balances from explorers where APIs permit; CoinMarketCap’s methodology describes reviewing blockchain data and token distribution tables using reproducible explorer or API data.
  4. Ask how the project counts bridged or multi-chain versions. Without a clear accounting method, the same economic supply could be counted more than once.

A wallet label is not conclusive proof of who controls an address; look for project disclosures and corroborating on-chain activity. If the project or an aggregator gives a circulating figure without wallet addresses and a reproducible method, treat it as an estimate or unverified rather than an independently confirmed count.

How much liquidity does this coin actually have?

Search a DEX analytics service by the confirmed contract and network, then match the exact pool or pair address. Record the pool’s token and quote-asset balances, liquidity estimate, 24-hour volume, transaction counts if available, pool creation time, and last-updated time. These fields are available in DEX Screener’s API documentation.

Liquidity and volume are not interchangeable. Liquidity estimates reflect the assets held in a pool at a point in time; volume measures trading over a stated interval. A pool can show a price and recent trades while having too little depth to absorb a sale without a substantial price move.

Check whether the pool can handle the trade you care about

  • Use the current reserves or the venue’s trade quote to estimate price impact for a representative trade size.
  • Check for multiple pools, their quote assets, and how recently each was updated. Do not blindly add pools that may be stale or overlap.
  • Compare the displayed liquidity with the trade size you might place. A large-looking 24-hour volume does not by itself show that your order can execute near the displayed price.

DEX Screener says it automatically lists a token after it is added to a liquidity pool and has at least one transaction. That establishes pool activity, not meaningful liquidity or a centralized-exchange listing; see its listing FAQ.

Is this token listed on a real exchange?

Check the exchange’s own asset page, market page, or official announcement. Confirm the exact token and network, the specific trading pair, whether the market is spot rather than a derivative, and—if relevant to the claim—whether deposits and withdrawals on that network are enabled. Then inspect current pair activity and order-book depth. An asset page or announcement verifies what the venue says it supports; activity and depth help show whether the market is currently usable.

Aggregator badges need context. CoinMarketCap’s tracked-asset criteria include a functional project website and block explorer and active public trading with material volume on at least one tracked exchange (criteria and methodology). CoinGecko also applies listing criteria and says projects traded only on self-serviceable venues may be rejected for security concerns (methodology). These are individual provider rules, not universal guarantees of legitimacy. An appearance on a DEX discovery service is not evidence that the token is listed on a centralized exchange.

Keep valuation figures tied to their supply basis

Market capitalization and fully diluted valuation (FDV) can use different supply measures. CoinGecko calculates market capitalization as price multiplied by circulating supply. DEX Screener documents FDV as supply net of burns multiplied by price, and notes that it may use reported circulating supply for market capitalization in some cases (DEX Screener token-profile documentation). Always record the supply basis, source, and timestamp next to a market-cap or FDV figure; the label alone does not tell you which supply was used.

  • Identity: network, contract address, and whether it is native, wrapped, bridged, or separately issued.
  • Supply: total, circulating, and maximum figures; definitions; wallet classifications; source links; and check time.
  • Liquidity: pool address, DEX, quote asset, reserves or liquidity estimate, volume window, timestamps, and estimated impact for a relevant trade size.
  • Exchange market: exchange, exact pair, spot or derivative status, current activity and depth, network support where relevant, and the venue page checked.
  • Valuation: market cap or FDV, the supply measure used, source, and timestamp.

Keep the conclusions separate: verified contract identity does not prove the circulating-supply estimate; a supply estimate does not show that a pool can handle a trade; and a pool or aggregator entry does not establish an active exchange market. None of these checks alone establishes that a token is safe or fairly valued.
