There is no single safe “roll back” operation for Nomad, Consul, and Vault. Nomad does not support downgrading as a general procedure; Consul documents restoring a pre-upgrade snapshot; Vault requires a manual restore of its pre-upgrade data and configuration alongside the previous version. Plan and test the recovery path before upgrading production—replacing a binary alone may leave it trying to read state changed by the newer version.

What rollback means for each product

HashiCorp’s documented recovery paths differ in both mechanism and how they treat persisted state. Use this comparison to choose the right runbook, then follow the product-specific steps below.

Product Documented recovery path Key state or compatibility consideration
Nomad Downgrading is not supported. Client downgrades require draining allocations and removing the data directory; safely downgrading servers requires re-provisioning the cluster. The upgrade guide does not establish a supported server snapshot rollback procedure. Do not treat swapping in an older binary as a general rollback.
Consul Restore the cluster from a pre-upgrade snapshot to return to the last working version. Protocol compatibility supports staged upgrades; it does not establish that arbitrary state changes made after upgrading can be reversed.
Vault Install the previous version and manually restore the pre-upgrade data-store snapshot and configuration. Vault makes no backward-compatibility guarantee for its data store, so do not assume the previous version can safely read post-upgrade state.

What to prepare before upgrading

Build the recovery plan around the exact source and target releases and the actual deployment topology. HashiCorp’s version-specific instructions can include restrictions or compatibility details that change the safe path.

  • Read the relevant Nomad upgrade guidance, Consul upgrade guidance, or Vault upgrade guidance for the versions involved. For Consul, also check the general upgrade process and release-specific instructions.
  • Identify exactly what the recovery point contains and what changes made after it would be lost. A point-in-time restore can discard later writes or configuration changes.
  • Rehearse recovery with the deployment topology and storage arrangement you use in production. Verify cluster health, restored data, and critical workflows rather than assuming that a backup file alone proves recoverability.
  • For Vault, preserve both the pre-upgrade data-store snapshot and the matching configuration, and confirm who can restart and unseal the instance.

How do I roll back a Nomad upgrade?

For Nomad clients

Nomad’s documented downgrade guidance is not a binary swap: drain allocations from the client and remove its data directory before downgrading. Draining is disruptive to workloads on that client, so plan placement and service impact before taking it out of service. Follow the current upgrade guide for release-specific changes and restrictions.

For Nomad servers

HashiCorp says to re-provision the cluster to safely downgrade servers. The guidance does not establish a supported procedure for restoring a server snapshot or simply reinstalling the older executable. If your recovery design relies on rebuilding or restoring infrastructure through a separate operational process, validate that process independently before the upgrade.

How do I downgrade Consul after an upgrade?

Use a pre-upgrade snapshot as the recovery point

Take a Consul snapshot before the upgrade. If the upgrade fails, HashiCorp’s backup guidance describes restoring the cluster from that backup to return to the last working version. Snapshots represent a point in time: account for writes and other changes after the snapshot when deciding whether restoration is acceptable.

Test the restore, not just the snapshot

HashiCorp recommends testing restore functionality before production. Consul’s protocol compatibility guidance can help operators perform staged upgrades, but compatibility for that upgrade process is not a guarantee that changed state can be rolled back. Check the version-specific upgrade instructions for any release caveats before choosing a recovery path.

How do I restore Vault after an upgrade?

Vault does not provide an automatic rollback. Its documented manual procedure uses the data-store snapshot and configuration from before the upgrade together with the previous Vault version. The precise commands and storage handling depend on the deployment and backend, so follow the applicable version- and storage-specific instructions rather than assuming one command sequence fits every installation.

  1. Stop Vault.
  2. Install the previous Vault version.
  3. Replace the upgraded data store with the snapshot taken before the upgrade.
  4. Restore the pre-upgrade configuration.
  5. Start Vault and verify that it is running the intended version.
  6. Unseal Vault, then test the restored instance and critical workflows.

Restoring the earlier snapshot returns Vault to that point in time, so changes made afterward may be lost. Because Vault makes no backward-compatibility guarantee for its data store, HashiCorp advises backing up data and configuration and testing a restored snapshot in a non-production instance before upgrading production.

Can I just reinstall the previous version?

Do not assume so. A prior binary may encounter persisted state changed by the newer version, and the documented remedies differ: Nomad does not support downgrading as a general operation, Consul’s documented route is snapshot restoration, and Vault’s manual rollback restores both pre-upgrade data and configuration. Use the recovery method documented for the product and exact release pair—not just the older executable.
